Mangalore: Katju warns State Govt to uphold freedom of Press

Mangalore, December 3: Justice Markandeya Katju, President of the Press Council of India (PCI) and former judge of the Supreme Court of India, has warned the Karnataka government against violation of the fundamental right of journalists and suppression of the freedom of the press.

Speaking to mediapersons on Monday at the Circuit House in Mangalore where he arrived today to participate in a programme in the city, Mr. Katju said: “I have been informed that jounalists are harassed in Mangalore by the police and also by the hooligans. I therefore make it clear that the PCI does not permit violation of press freedom either by assaults on journalists or giving them threats or in any other manner. Freedom of the press is a fundamental right under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution and it is the duty of the State to uphold this right. I therefore warn the authorities which include political, administrative and police authorities that if they violate this freedom by assaults or threats to journalists or in any other manner, the PCI will take strong action in this connection. In particular, the Government of Karnataka, through its Chief Minister is given a strong warning to uphol press freedom and to suppress activities of hooligans or police personnel who violate the fundamental right of citizens, including journalists”.

The delegation of journalists from Mangalore submitted an appeal to Mr. Katju on this occasion, asking him to speak up against the arrest of journalist Naveen Soorinje in the homestay attack case.

Responding to the appeal, Mr. Katju said: “It will not be proper for me to make any comment on the case as the chargesheet has been filed in the criminal court and th judicial proceedings are pending before the Judicial Magistrate. I am also told that a petition 482 CRPC is pending before the High Court appealing for the quashing of the proceedings. Since the matter is sub-judice both before the Trial as well as the High Court, it will not be proper for me to comment on Mr. Soorinje”.

Chennai, July 27: Multi-lingual actress Vijayalakshmi, who attempted suicide yesterday, alleging harassment and bullying by followers of Naam Thamizhar party leader Seeman and Panankattu Padai’s Hari Nadar, is recuperating at a hospital in Chennai. 

Vijayalakshmi is known for films like Friends and Boss Engira Baskaran. She recently made headlines for speaking against Seeman and the torture she was allegedly facing from the actor-turned-politician and his party.

In the video which was uploaded on Sunday evening, Vijayalakshmi said, “This is my last video and I have been in tremendous stress in the last four months because of Seeman and his partymen. I tried my level best to survive all these days because of my mother and sister, but I have been humiliated in the media by Harinadar recently.”

She added, “I would like to tell fans who are watching the video just because I was born in Karnataka, Seeman has tortured me a lot. As a woman, I have put up with it to my highest capabilities. I won’t be able handle the pressure anymore. I am from the Pillai community, the same community LTTE leader Prabhakaran is part of. Prabhakaran is the only reason Seeman is who he is today, but now he has been harassing me on social media continuously. You slut shamed me to make me feel the pain and it is up to me to decide on what to do after facing such insults from you. I request my fans not to let Seeman get away from this case. He should never get anticipatory bail. My death should be a big eye-opener to everyone. I don’t want to be a slave to anybody.”

Bengaluru, Jun 5: The much awaited Southwest Monsoon entered Karnataka with widespread rain in coastal and central regions of the southern state, an official said on Friday. Rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over coastal areas and at a few places over the interior parts over the next 24-48 hours.

"The southwest monsoon entered the state on Thursday as predicted from Kerala and the Arabian Sea, with moderate to heavy rainfall in the coastal districts and central or Malnad region of the state," Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre Director Srinivas Reddy told media here.

Though the monsoon has set in on time in the state, Reddy said its progress was likely to be slow in the next three days, as cyclone Nisarga induced high-speed winds took away rain-bearing clouds from the southern peninsula.

According to the regional meteorological office, Karwar in Uttar Kannada district received a whopping 15cm rainfall on Thursday, followed by 11cm each at Kundapur in Udupi district and Shivamogga in Malnad region.

Kadra and Gersoppa in Uttara Kannada and Kottigehara in Chikkamagaluru district had 10cm rainfall, followed by 8cm at Virajpet in Kodagu district and 7cm each at Shirali and Gokarana in Uttara Kannda.

Isolated to scattered rainfall also occurred in many places across the north and south interior regions of the state.

"The monsoon will advance in the state to south and north interior areas after June 8 as there is lull in its movement due to lack of rain-bearing clouds and winds to carry them," said Reddy.

Noting that the four-month monsoon from June to September, crucial to the rain-dependent state would be normal this year, Reddy said its progress and spread, however, would depend on various factors like cloud formations and wind movements.

"Conditions are likely to become favourable for monsoon advancement in the state over the next 2-3 days," asserted Reddy.

Mangaluru, July 5: Two children died after getting trapped under the debris of a landslide which occurred at Banglagudde in Kaikamba on the outskirts of Mangaluru today.

The deceased are identified as Safwan (16) and Sahala (10).

The rescue teams including personnel from NDRF, fire service and police brought out the body after four hours of rescue operation.

According to sources, landslides occurred at 12:30 pm and of the five members, three ran out of the house. The two kids got trapped in the debris.

The heavy rain in the last two days has softened the soil of the hillock. An Auto-rickshaw, lorry and a bike too have buried under the soil.

It was said that caving in of the hillock continued even when the rescue operation was in progress, thus making the rescue operation difficult.

District-in-Charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary who visited the spot said two houses have been completely damaged and inmates of 14 houses that are facing the problem in the vicinity will be shifted to safer locations.
