Prohibitory orders extended in Udupi

Mangalore, December 6: The Udupi district administration has extended prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in the coastal areas of Udupi district from Wednesday mid night to December 20.

The prohibitory orders were extended following reports of continued non-traditional fishing of cuttlefish by fishermen from other states, especially from Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Goa.

According to a notification issued by deputy commissioner MT Reju, traditional fishing by gillnet and mechanised boats that are not registered in Karnataka has been banned in 10 km area from seashore in Udupi district. The sale of fish by boats not registered in Karnataka was banned in all fisheries harbours of Udupi district. Any boat from other states which has anchored in the fisheries harbours of the district has been directed to leave with immediate effect. The catching of cuttlefish through non-traditional method has been banned.

Earlier, the ban was imposed from November 21 to Wednesday midnight. The notification said that violation of the directions should be brought to the notice of the Coastal Security Police, officials of the department of ports, and the police department. The ban was extended following non-traditional fishing by fishermen from other states was reported from Gangolli, Kaup, Hangarakatte and other areas.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and MLA Satyanarayana passed away today due to multiple organ failure. He was 67.

Satyanarayana was representing Tumakuru’s Sira constituency in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He is survived by five daughters and one son.

It is learnt that he was suffering from multiple organ ailments from the past few days and was recently admitted to Manipal Hospital in the city. He breathed his last at 12:20 p.m.

He contested from JDS and worked three times as MLA and 2 times as MP. He was the chairman of KSRTC during the coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy.

Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda mourned his death and said, “It is a shock to hear the demise of former minister and my close friend. We are friends from the past 3 decades and I cannot recall the days without him.”

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar said, “Satyanarayana was concerned for the farmers and he was a gentleman. Hearing the news hurts me and this is an irreparable loss to the political field.”

Bengaluru, May 27: Aimed at giving a boost to affordable housing, the Karnataka government on Tuesday decided to slash the stamp duty on new apartments costing up to ₹35 lakh.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to review the progress of the Stamps & Registration department.

The Chief Minister directed that the stamp duty be cut from the existing five per cent to two per cent on apartments costing less than ₹20 lakh, getting registered for the first time, his office said in a statement.

Further, the stamp duty on apartments costing between ₹21 lakh - ₹35 lakh will be down from five per cent to three per cent, it said. It is estimated that in 2020-21 due to COVID-19 induced lockdown, Stamps and Registration department might fall short of its revenue target by ₹3,524 crore. The revenue target for 2020-21 is ₹12,655 crore.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: In an operation, forest officials of Puttur has arrested two persons as many elephant tusks at Puduvettu in Belathangadi taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

Forest officials said on Wednesday the accused nabbed last night were identified as PK Dinesh from Madikeri and V Kumar from Hassan district.

Both were caught while trying to sell tusks the value of which was estimated to be lakhs.
