Colourful extravaganza and star presence enthralls audience at 'Agno Fest 2012'

December 7, 2012

Mangalore, December 7: Well-known music director Gurukiran hummed tunes and enthralled the students and audience with his melodic voice at the inaugural ceremony of 'Agno Fest 2012', a two-day inter-collegiate fest organised by St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangalore, on Friday.

Incorporated with the theme 'Bonne Volonte – Cirque' (goodwill and readiness mixed with humour), the inauguration of the inter-collegiate fest was a zealous extravaganza, with a colourful entourage escorting the guests and an entertaining performance from the students of the college.

Inaugurating the fest, Gurukiran lauded the students on their talents and advised the students to follow their passion and to continue it in later years of their lives. “Student life is the most wonderful and you should make the most of it, along with your studies,” he said.

Addressing the gathering, principal of the college Dr (Sr) Prem D'Souza said that the youth was a great force and the greatest resource of the country. Their love and service will be a turning point for the country and enable it to become a great nation. While Man is strong, fear can cusp and limit him; whereas loving kindness can overcome any depths that have to be faced. Love unites and binds us, showing that the youth can indeed change the world, she said.

Advising the students, she said, “College fests bring out the best in students. It is an occasion to work together and show team spirit. We should encourage competitions in a co-operative spirit. You are here not merely to study, but to enable the world to live more freely and generously with hope. Each of us must be the change we hope to see in the world,” she said.

The Agno Fest will see teams from over 12 colleges across the district battling each other in various competitions like Treasure Hunt, Mock Press, Junk Art, Singing, Dancing, Comedy, Quiz, Debate, Best Personality and Best Manager, to win the glittering Agno Championship at the valedictory ceremony on Saturday.

Staff co-ordinator of the fest Malvika Shetty welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest on the occasion. Student council president of the college Fallon Lasrado spoke about the significance of the college fest in her introductory speech. Staff co-ordinator Prajwal Rao delivered a vote of thanks.

Superior of St Agnes Convent Sr Maria Kripa, vice-principal of the college Sr Supriya, joint secretary Sr Olivia, Sr Marie Evelyn and Fr Santhosh were present. Rovena compered the programme.

United Nations, Jul 25: UN report on terrorism has warned that there are “significant numbers” of ISIS terrorists in Kerala and Karnataka, noting that the al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent terror group, which reportedly has between 150 and 200 militants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, is planning attacks in the region.

The 26th report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team concerning ISIS, al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities said that the al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) operates under the Taliban umbrella from Nimruz, Helmand and Kandahar provinces of Afghanistan.

“The group reportedly has between 150 and 200 members from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and Pakistan. The current leader of AQIS is Osama Mahmood…, who succeeded the late Asim Umar… AQIS is reportedly planning retaliation operations in the region to avenge the death of its former leader,” it said.

According to the report, “One member state reported that the ISIL Indian affiliate (Hind Wilayah), which was announced on May 10, 2019, has between 180 and 200 members”.

It said that there are “significant numbers of ISIL operatives in Kerala and Karnataka states.”

In May last year, the Islamic State (also known as ISIS, ISIL or Daesh) terror group claimed to have established a new "province" in India, the first of its kind announcement that came after clashes between militants and security forces in Kashmir.

The dreaded terror outfit, through its Amaq News Agency, had said that the Arabic name of the new branch is "Wilayah of Hind" (India Province).

A senior Jammu and Kashmir police officer had rejected the claim.

Previously, ISIS attacks in Kashmir were linked to its so-called Khorasan Province branch, which was set up in 2015 to cover "Afghanistan, Pakistan and nearby lands".

Bengaluru, Jun 7: A mobile app and a portal offering technology-driven solutions to manage and mitigate floods in urban areas were launched here on Saturday by Karnataka Revenue Minister R Ashoka.

The mobile app 'Bengaluru Megha Sandesha' was developed to disseminate information on rainfall and flood forecast, location-specific dynamic weather directly to the public. "The in-built features of the app and the information provided for a city is the first of its kind in the country," a press release said. This is a system of providing rainfall, flood forecasts and early warning to the officials of government agencies in the city through SMS to their mobile phones, social media platforms and a dedicated web portal, the release said.

The information provided would help the civic authorities act in advance and manage the floods, it said. The portal 'Varunamitra' is for information on the weather. The information provided is based on real-time data from 100 telemetric rain gauges installed and maintained at various locations across the state, it said. Rainfall forecast is based on the weather research and forecast models developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Ahmedabad, the release said.

The information on flood forecast is based on the hydrological model, hydraulic routing and automation of the results. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, along with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), took up this project on the urban flood model for Bengaluru city. The project was funded by the Central government's department of science and technology, the release added.
