Mangalore, December 9: BJP-led Karnataka State government will organise summer camps for schoolchildren to expose them to religious scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, said Minister for Muzrai and Ports Kota Srinivas Poojary.

He did not refer to any Islamic or Christian religious texts.

Speaking after inaugurating a daylong convention for archakas (temple priests), at Town Hall here on Saturday, he said that children would also be taught bhajans.

He said persons who criticised the government of “Brahminising” scholastic education were not ready for debate. He said that he had pointed out to them in Bhagavad Gita, Krishna, a non-Brahmin, had given his teachings to Arjuna, a Kshathriya. When that was the case, teaching the text to students could not be called “Brahminising education.”

Mr. Poojary said the government's decision had nothing to do with castes or religions but was aimed at helping society.

Even archakas of the temples where Narayana Guru's teachings and different types of worship are being practised, have been invited to the convention, he added.
