Mangalore, December 11: The new Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district had few words of appreciation for port city of Mangalore as far as cleanliness is concerned.

Launching the massive cleanliness awareness campaign, organised by Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), Malabar Gold and Diamonds, Prajna Counselling Centre, Kankanady and Prerana Mahila Swasahaaya Sanghagala Okkoota, Mangalore aimed to make the district clean and plastic-free, at a programme at Town hall on Monday, DC N Prakash said that for him, Mangalore appears to be very clean after having seen the garbage mess in State capital.

“People of Mangalore are intelligent and hygiene conscious. This sense of cleanliness makes a huge difference,” the DC said adding that though the city is in good condition, there is still scope for improvement.

Promising to extend full support to the City Corporation, the DC said that awareness needs to be disseminated among people so that concepts of cleanliness and sanitation get greater importance in the city.

Ombudsman for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in Dakshina Kannada N Sheena Shetty said that the attempts to clean and sanitise the district should be such that it attracts the attention of the entire world. Every individual should be inspired to take up the cause of cleaning the city. It is the people who have to bring change. Cleanliness has to come from people, through people. If every home in a village gets a compost pit and gets rid of the habit of using plastic bags, then there can be complete sanitation.

Awareness posters and eco-friendly bags were released on the occasion. Mangalore City Corporation Mayor Gulzar Banu presided over the programme.

Director of Prajna Counselling Centre Hilda Rayappan welcomed the gathering. MCC Commissioner Dr K Harish Kumar, Deputy Mayor Amithakala, Director of Malabar Gold and Diamonds Shaheen Parvez, Standing Committee for Public Health, Education and Social Justice President Bhaskar Chandra Shetty and Corporation in-charge Health Officer Dr Sudarshan were present.

The function was preceded by entertainment programmes, by women self-help groups.
