Mangalore, December 12: An apolitical Fast Satyagraha was staged in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Wednesday demanding announcement of apt packages, compensation and relief for endosulfan victims from the government.

Speaking on the occasion Prof. Vishwanath, lecturer, said that after the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, endosulfan has been the most destructive tragedy in the history of the country. For two decades, authorities have failed to understand the impact of the chemical and the government continues to have an unclear policy in this regard. There is a need to ascertain the right number of people who have fell prey to endosulfan as the survey conducted by the government is not satisfactory. Nevertheless, immediate shelling of compensation has to be carried out to the families which have been identified already, he said.

J R Lobo, Former Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation, said that apart from endosulfan, there are other chemicals which are also causing ill-effects on nature and the lives of people. Lamenting the approach of the government, he said that had such a tragedy taken place in any other developed country, the government there would have wasted no time in taking strict measures.

N  Ismail, Principal, Badria College, Mangalore, said that man's greed has led him to go against nature. In an effort to double the production of fruits and vegetables in a short span using chemicals, man has invited the wrath of nature, he said and stressed on the need to stand by the victims of endosulfan.

Shakuntala Shetty, Former MLA, in her address said that there is a need to establish rehabilitation centres for endosulfan victims because there are many children suffering who have no one to look after in case their parents pass away. Disability by itself is natural but when it is given a chance through artificial means, it leads to tragedy, she opined.

Muneer Katipalla, DYFI leader, also expressed his support to the cause and urged the government to follow the Kerala model where the state government there is doling out monthly pensions and a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh besides taking other initiatives.

PV Mohan, the organizer of the satyagraha, Kripa Amar Alva, Member of the Advisory Bord, AAI, Appi, Corporator, MCC, also took part besides others.

Addressing the protesters at one-day hunger strike organised by Endo Virodhi Horata Samithi under the leadership of AICC member P V Mohan, and other like-minded organisations here on Wednesday, he said: “I have already held discussion with Health Minister on the endosulfan problems in Karnataka. The Centre and the State are equally responsible for the mishap. Efforts will be made to take Union Health Minister to the endosulfan victims, during his next visit to Mangalore.”

Bengaluru, Jan 10: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the murder case of journalist-activist Gauri, arrested absconding suspect Rushikesh Devdikar alias Murali (44) from Dhanbad district in Jharkhand on Thursday evening and is bringing him to the city.

Rushikesh is the 18th suspect arrested in the case, Chief Investigating Officer M N Anucheth said. The investigation has revealed that he was primarily involved in the conspiracy to murder Gauri.

Rushikesh, who was hiding in a house in Katras, Dhanbad, will be produced before the local Judicial Magistrate in Dhanbad on Friday, said Anucheth, adding that the SIT had searched his house for clues. "We will obtain a transit warrant from the court and then bring him to Bengaluru," the officer said.

Originally from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Rushikesh's family still lives there.

Gauri Lankesh was shot dead near her residence at around 8.20 pm on September 5, 2017, by two bike-borne men.

Bengaluru, May 29: Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy on Thursday said the Centre has objected to the state's decision to increase working days at factories, and the matter would be discussed in the next cabinet meeting.

"....the Centre has raise objection to extending working days and has said it should be brought down. We will amend it....I will share the details after the next cabinet meet, the matter did not come up today (Thursday), we have received the letter," Madhuswamy told reporters in response to a question after the cabinet meeting.

He noted that a couple of states that had increased the working hours have withdrawn it. The Karnataka government had, on May 22, issued a notification allowing factories to extend working hours upto 10 hours a day and 60 hours a week till August 21. The extension of work hours is from the existing eight hours a day and 48 hours a week.

Pointing out that while announcing COVID-19 relief package, the Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had announced Rs 5,000 per acre for maize farmers, Madhuswamy said while issuing the circular which mentioned that relief would be applicable to rabi crop, as it would not benefit many farmers.

Now, it has now been decided to give Rs 5,000 per acre to all maize farmers, irrespective of rabi or kharif. There were also several rules and regulations for barbers, autorickshaw and taxi drivers among others to claim their one-time compensation of Rs 5,000, the Minister said.

"We have decided to relax most of them (rules) other than those essential and give compensation, as regulations wouldn't have benefited many," he said. With five nominated seats of legislative council falling vacant on June 23, the cabinet has authorised the Chief Minister to nominate for 5 seats.

The cabinet also gave post-facto approval for Karnataka Repealing of Certain Enactments and Regional Law Bill 2020 that has been passed by the legislature.
