Alarm over rise in dengue fever cases

Kasargod, December 13: Alarmed at the rising incidence of dengue fever cases in the district, the district administration has decided to relocate the wholesale fish market at Kanhangad to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the polluted water around the market place.

 

There are 81 confirmed cases of dengue besides 140 suspected cases in the district, a virus disease spread by aedes mosquito, District Medical Officer (DMO) P. Gopinath said on Wednesday.

 

The authorities' action comes in the light of two deaths, including that of a youth identified as Akhish, a native of Irikkur in Kannur, working at an automobile workshop at Puthiyakotta in Kanhangad, in the district.

 

The majority of dengue cases had been reported form Madikkai, Ajanur and the Pullur-Periye panchayat, the DMO said. At an emergency meeting chaired by Collector P.S. Mohammed Sagir at the Collectorate on Wednesday, it was decided to temporarily relocate the fish market at Kottachery in Kanhangad to Punchavi to avoid accumulation of waste water around the market.

 

The garbage from the fish market and the water accumulated around the place were cited as reasons for the proliferation of mosquitoes.

 

The meeting decided to relocate the market till alternative arrangements are made for the wholesale fish market.

 

The meeting was attended, among others, by Sub-Collector S. Venkitapathi, Additional District Magistrate H. Dineshan, Mr. Gopinath, and Kanhangad Municipal Chairperson Hasina Thajuddin.

 

The meeting also decided to launch a cleanliness drive in building complexes housing migrant labourers. The authorities will inspect the buildings to ensure hygiene is maintained.

 

Health Department workers are engaged in fogging and spraying of chemicals to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in water-logged localities.

Mangaluru, Mar 25: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has so far given nod to three private laboratories in Karnataka for testing COVID-19. The ICMR comes under the Department of Health, Government of India

The three labs are KMC Hospital Manipal, Shankar Research Centre's laboratory, and SRL laboratory on Bowring Hospital Road at Shivajinagar, Bengaluru.

Eight private labs from Maharashtra, two from Haryana, three from Tamil Nadu, four from Delhi, and three each from Karnataka and Gujarat have been given permission. 

These labs have over 15,000 collection centres all over the country. Blood samples and throat swabs of coronavirus suspects can be given at these centres.

Mangaluru, Jan 8: In an operation, forest officials of Puttur has arrested two persons as many elephant tusks at Puduvettu in Belathangadi taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

Forest officials said on Wednesday the accused nabbed last night were identified as PK Dinesh from Madikeri and V Kumar from Hassan district.

Both were caught while trying to sell tusks the value of which was estimated to be lakhs.

Mangaluru, Mar 31: With the Dakshina Kannada district administration relaxing the lockdown from 6 am to 3 pm to purchase essential commodities, panic-stricken citizens rushed to the shops early in the morning itself.

The citizens had formed a serpentine line in front of shops and supermarkets in different parts of Mangaluru and on the outskirts of the city to purchase their requirements.

As a precautionary measure, many were seen wearing masks.

“In spite of waiting in a long queue to purchase, we are not able to get the required essential commodities. Why can’t the district administration ensure enough stock of commodities in the shops and supermarkets,’’ asked a customer who had stood in a queue outside a supermarket at Chilimbi.
People were seen crowding outside markets at Kankanady, Mallikatte, Urwa and Central Market, violating the purpose of social distancing.

Consequently, vegetable prices have increased in the markets and shops. This is despite abundant stocks being available in these markets.

Trucks had unloaded the vegetables at Central Market on Sunday, according to sources. The prices of onions are skyrocketing yet again and is sold from Rs 50 to Rs 55 while a kg of carrot costs Rs 100.

"Why can’t the authorities check the rise in the price of vegetables and ensure that the poor are not inconvenienced," asks Lakshmi, a housewife.
