Call to include Tulu in 8th Schedule of Constitution

New Delhi, Dec ember 15: Union ministers, members of Parliament and other leaders, who participated in a meeting held here on Friday, demanded that the Centre include Tulu in the eighth Schedule of the Constitution to protect the identity of the language.

Former Union Minister Oscar Fernandes chaired the meeting. Over 50 lakh people speak Tulu, the leaders said. “Tulu is a rich language and has a great history and one can find Tulu words being used in Greek dramas as this land had good bilateral relations with far-away nations,” writer Purushothama Bilimale said.

The State had earlier recommended inclusion of Tulu in the eighth schedule of the Constitution. Bilimale called upon the Union Ministers and MPs to help fulfil the long-standing demand. The meeting also discussed the proposed “Delhi Tulu Siri-2013,” a World Tulu meet at the national capital scheduled on February 24.

Union Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily, Labour and Employment Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, leaders from Karnataka— Jayaprakash Hegde, Ramesh Jigajinagi, P C Gaddigowdar, Basavaraj Patil Sedam, H Vishwanath, J Rama Krishna, Shivarame Gowda, P C Mohan, Anil Lad, Shivakumar Udasi, M Shivanna, H M Revanna and others participated in the meeting.

Shivamogga, Jul 24: The protest by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) under the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) entered its 14th day on Friday demanding personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and a salary of at least Rs 12,000 per month.

They have been protesting in different parts of Karnataka since July 10.

Staging a protest in front of the deputy commissioner's office, the ASHA workers complained of the government turning a deaf ear to their problems.

Clad in their signature pink saris, they raised slogans to demand appropriate salary for their work and the necessary equipment to protect them from the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. 

They said that they worked tirelessly during the COVID-19-induced lockdown without any safety. The department only provided them with sub-standard equipment to combat the deadly virus. All they were asking for is a basic pay of Rs 12,000 against the current pay of Rs 6,000.

Prema, an ASHA said, "The authorities are praising our work, clapping for us and showering flowers on us but are not listening to our grievances."

Mangaluru, July 30: The Social Democratic Party of India has condemned the move by the state government to drop a lesson on legendary Mysuru rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the class 7 textbook.

The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapter from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed. 

In a media release statement, SDPI State President Ilyas Mohammed Thumbe termed the move as communally motivated. “By dropping the lesson, the BJP-led government is engaged in saffronisation of education,” he alleged.

He said that Tipu was the most prominent freedom fighter, who had given priority to irrigation, rocket technology and harmony. The BJP government is also planning to scrap lessons on the Constitution, secularism and democracy. By twisting history, the BJP is trying to mislead the younger generation, he added.

Jan 6: A Thane resident lost a little over Rs 1 lakh in an online fraud involving popular payment gateways, police said on Saturday. The complainant, a resident of Patlipada, wanted to sell his furniture and posted an ad on Facebook on December 21, an official said.

On December 24, he received a call from one Rajendra Sharma who offered to buy the furniture and wanted to transfer the amount through payment gateways — Paytm and Google Pay, he said.

However, instead of the money getting credited to his account, the complainant found that Rs 1.01 lakh were debited from him during three transactions on two payment gateways, the official said.

The complainant realised that he had been cheated when the accused assured that he would return the money and asked him for another account number, he added.

An offense has been registered against the unidentified accused under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act and further investigations are underway, he said.
