Made-snana at Kukke Subrahmanya: Apex court stays high court order

New Delhi, December 15: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the High Court order on the controversial practice of 'Made Snana' in Kukke Subramanya temple in Dakshina Kannada district.

 

Hearing an emergency petition filed by Adivasi Budakattu Hitarakshna Vedike, Karnataka, a Division Bench comprising Justice D K Jain and Justice Madan B Lokur R stayed the High Court ruling and issued notices to all the parties. The SC Bench said: “the operation of the impugned order shall remain stayed.”

 

The Karnataka government had recently filed an affidavit in the High Court modifying the annual ritual and the High Court accepted it.

 

The government had said devotees would no longer be allowed the practice of rolling over plantain leaves with leftovers of food consumed by the Brahmins. Instead, the food offered to the deity will be directly brought from the sanctum sanctorum of the temple to the outer yard in the form of 'prasadam' and it will be placed on the plantain leaves.

 

Any devotee can roll over it as part of their 'harake' (offering to the god). It has also been decided against serving food to Brahmins or anybody else in the outer yard on the day the ritual is held.

 

It has also been decided to ensure that the temple does not encourage, sponsor or permit 'pankthi bedha' (caste discrimination while serving food).

 

The High Court Division Bench, headed by Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen, then disposed of the petition.

Bengaluru, Apr 2: About 1,500 people from Karnataka might have attended the Tablighi Jamaat event in Nizamuddin in the national capital between March 8 to 20. Of these, the State has been able to trace 800 people.
 
Of the 800 persons, 143 people have been found to be symptomatic.
 
Mr Jawaid Akhtar, Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), in a statement here on Thursday said that the Centre had sent the list of 1,500 people to the State.
 
“We cannot say if all these have attended the congregation. Some of them may have attended and some may be the contacts of those who have attended. We have been able to trace 800 from the list and samples of 143 symptomatic persons have been sent for tests."

Chamarajanagar, Feb 7: Health authorities in Karnataka have constituted a mobile team of doctors to monitor villages sharing a border with Kerala districts.

Strong vigil is being maintained by the health authorities in Karnataka after three confirmed cases of Coronavirus was detected in Kerala.

Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja on Wednesday had informed that three positive cases of Coronavirus were found in the state and other suspects were being monitored in isolation.

The virus originated in Wuhan in December and has since then spread to various parts around the world.

China has imposed quarantine and travel restrictions, affecting the movement of 56 million people in more than a dozen cities, amid fears that the transmission rate will accelerate.

Bengaluru, Jun 25: Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations commenced in Karnataka on Thursday amid relaxation of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions.

Schools in the state ensured that social distancing norms were followed and other precautionary measures taken at the examination centres. All the students underwent thermal screening at the centres and were provided hand sanitisers and masks.

"Today, 464 students are writing the exam. In every classroom, 20 students will be writing their papers. We have also arrangements two separate classrooms for those from containment zones and those who are unwell," said Sister Sagaimir, Principal, St. Joseph's Convent Girls High School.

"We have been working for the last two weeks to put everything in place for the examination Ensuring they maintain social distancing, wear a mask and sanitise," she added.

In other schools, arrangements at the designated centres were inspected before the exams began.

Yesterday, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar held a video conference with senior officials to review the preparedness for safely conducting the SSLC examinations scheduled on June 25.

"8,48,203 students will appear for the SSLC examination starting tomorrow in 2,879 centres across the state. All the guidelines issues by state government must be followed strictly" Sudhakar said in the meeting.
