Mangalore, December 15: Yenepoya Foundation-sponsored Academic Excellence Awards were distributed among 308 meritorious students and 16 institutions at a ceremony at the Yenepoya University Campus in Deralakatte, near here, on Saturday.

Speaking after distributing the awards, Mangalore MLA U T Khader said that a revolutionary change in the society could be brought by education. Each student deserves an opportunity to be educated, study further and excel in life. They must aspire to reach great heights and thereby render social service to the society in the future. Those born in poverty need not remain the same. Those from a poor background having received scholarships must continue their studies with the same fervour and dedication, he said.

Islam gives utmost importance to education, and it was the Islamic civilisation centuries ago that established the basis of medical wisdom. The way of learning in Islam combines both the secular and religious kinds of education to form perfect human beings, he said, encouraging the students to continue learning about spirituality as well.

Mangaluru, July 5: Two children died after getting trapped under the debris of a landslide which occurred at Banglagudde in Kaikamba on the outskirts of Mangaluru today.

The deceased are identified as Safwan (16) and Sahala (10).

The rescue teams including personnel from NDRF, fire service and police brought out the body after four hours of rescue operation.

According to sources, landslides occurred at 12:30 pm and of the five members, three ran out of the house. The two kids got trapped in the debris.

The heavy rain in the last two days has softened the soil of the hillock. An Auto-rickshaw, lorry and a bike too have buried under the soil.

It was said that caving in of the hillock continued even when the rescue operation was in progress, thus making the rescue operation difficult.
