Mangalore, December 20: The local unit of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) on Wednesday staged a demonstration urging the government to distribute adequate compensation to endosulfan victims
Addressing the protesters in front of the deputy commissioner's office here, anti-endosulfan activist Shridhar Gowda said that endosulfan was sprayed on cashew plantations using helicopters in 92 villages in Dakshina Kannada district since 1980.
"The hazardous pesticide has been banned completely in 73 nations across the world. However, India has not taken a decision to ban it yet. As a result hundreds of children are born with permanent disabilities and other diseases," he added.
ABVP state secretary K Ramesh said that there were several instances of parents committing suicide after seeing their children suffering from endosulfan straying.
"The government should take steps immediately to distribute adequate compensation for all the victims," he added.
