Kasargod, December 20: Timely intervention of the Fire and Rescue Services personnel by containing a fire that broke out at a stationary tanker carrying crude palm oil averted a major tragedy in the busy national highway at Cherkala locality near here on Wednesday.
The fire, that destroyed the cabin of the stationary truck, triggered panic at the Indira Nagar locality forcing the authorities concerned to evacuate students of a nearby school.
The fire in the tanker, owned by Parison Foods Private Limited, was noticed around 2 p.m. after the crew went out to have lunch at a nearby wayside hotel. The crew immediately informed the fire station here.
However, the timely action by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel prevented the fire from spreading further. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Senior police officials led by Superintendent of Police S. Surendran supervised the fire-fighting operations as the incident resulted in traffic snarls for sometime.
