Increasing sexual abuse of women and children: Cops told to be more vigilant

Kasargod, December 22: With incidents of sexual harassment of women and children on the rise in Kasargod and other parts of the state, a special advisory meeting convened at the district police headquarters here called for more vigilance on the part of the police to initiate stern action against the culprits.

 

At the meeting, attended by Childline, Legal Services Society, NGOs, and Women Cell officials, the participants underscored the need for the local police to be more active and vigilant in resolving cases of excesses on women and girls children rather than reducing such incidents as mere family issues.

 

The participants also said that the police or the vigilance panel formed at panchayats usually did not reach out to the grassroots level. District Superintendent of Police S. Surendran said there were a large number of sexual abuse cases that went unreported in the district.

 

“The committee intended to prevent such activities found that only 24 schools across the district have counsellors. We will ask the Departments of Education and Social Welfare to post counsellors at every school,” the officer said. The awareness campaign on the abuses faced by women and girls should begin at home, and school authorities should create a 'vigilant campus,' where children are closely monitored by teachers,” he said.

 

The committee directed schools to involve Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) in the awareness programme and sought extension of counselling to parents too. The committee will be expanded to assure representation of people from all strata of society from across the district, including the police, he said. The juvenile police team in the district would conduct a special drive to spot minors involved in offensive activities and take corrective steps to bring them back to mainstream society.

 

Mr. Surendran also urged the schools to make a list of students abstaining from classes.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, on completion of one year of his government, today said coronavirus hampered his development plans for the state.

He said the state will not see a lockdown again "at any cost".

"Due to coronavirus we couldn't meet people's expectations but now we'll not have lockdown in Karnataka at any cost. In future we're going to fulfill whatever I announced in Budget. If necessary we'll take loans and complete all development work," said Yediyurappa.

"Covid has hampered development plans of Karnataka, lot more needs to be done, i'm committed to providing an able, stable government," he said.

Arrangements were made for virtual celebrations to mark the one-year anniversary of Yediyurappa government at Banquet Hall in Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. Social distancing was maintained at the event.

A record 5,199 new COVID-19 cases and 82 deaths were reported from Karnataka on Sunday, the state's health department said.

With this, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state stands at 96,141, including 58,417 active cases and 35,838 recoveries.

So far, 1,878 deaths have been reported from Karnataka. Karnataka is the only state to have over 50,000 active cases with overall tally below 1 lakh.

Bengaluru, July 17: The government of Karnataka has decided to issue caste and income certificates to Brahmins in the state to reduce the socio-economic inequality faced by the community.

“A notification has been issued to tehsildars in all 30 districts to issue caste and income certificates to Brahmins so that they can also benefit from the government schemes and scholarships,” a Revenue Department official told said.

The notification comes a month after the Karnataka State Brahmin Development Board on June 10 appealed to Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa to issue the certificates to the traditionally dominant community, which accounts for 3 per cent of the 7 crore state population.

“Though Brahmins are in ‘minority’ in terms of their population across the state, they need caste and income certificates to benefit from the welfare schemes meant for the economic weaker sections such as SC, ST and OBC groups,” the official said.

The board was set up in March 2019 as a state-run company with Rs 5 crore authorised capital and Rs 5 crore equity and is registered with the Registrar of Companies.

The notification was issued to the local bodies and taluk offices after several members of the community complained to state Revenue Minister R. Ashoka that they were unable to benefit from the welfare schemes in the absence of the certificates.

The certificates will also help students from the community to avail scholarships for higher studies from the state-funded board if their gross annual family income is less than Rs 8 lakh per year.

The board has also urged the state government to implement the 10 per cent quota for its community members under the economically weaker sections, as applicable for Central government jobs and admissions to central institutions.

Noting that every community has people who are forward and backward economically for various reasons, including historical, the official said the board would be empowered to serve the Brahmins.

“The board will provide interest-free loans to the financially weaker sections of the community,” said its Chairman H.S. Sachidananda Murthy.

New Delhi, Jan 2: India on Sunday reported the second case of novel coronavirus with a person from Kerala with a travel history to China testing positive, officials said.

"The patient has tested positive for novel coronavirus and is in isolation in a hospital," the health ministry said.

The patient is stable and is being closely monitored, it said.

India's first novel coronavirus case in India was also reported from Kerala with a student testing positive.
