Muslim students asked to change mindset; Around 2,200 students get scholarship

December 23, 2012

Mangalore, December 23: Muslim students have been asked to change their feeling that they will be discriminated on grounds of religion in India.

Suggesting that this attitude will only prevent their progress, Khaleel Ahmed, Chairman, Karnataka Zakath and Charitable Trust said that Muslim community in general has become victim to this misconception that it will be discriminated by people of other communities because of its identity.

Speaking at a scholarship distribution programme organised by the Trust in Mangalore on Sunday, Mr. Ahmed said that the Muslim community needs to relook at this thinking and change it as soon as possible.

“Do not nurture this fear of discrimination. It is a competitive world and if you are competent and able, you will make it irrespective of whichever organization or workplace you want to get into. This fear of discrimination will only strand your progress and stop you from looking for better opportunities. If discrimination was really a factor, how would Tata become a leading company in India which is owned by the ones belonging to Parsi minority community? How Ranbaxy and Cipla pharma owned by Sikhs and Muslims respectively shoot up to the top in the country if there really was any discrimination? There are many Muslims who are holding top positions in the country. How they could have got there if there was discrimination?” he asked the students present.

Urging the Muslims to feel proud of their Indian identity, he said that nowhere in the world do Muslims enjoy the rights and freedom that they enjoy in India.

“Muslims enjoy the reputation of being first class citizens of the country although they are a minority community here, while on the contrary, minorities in other countries including Muslim states are being subjected to harassment,” he opined. Muslim students must come out and mix with students of other communities, he added.

The Muslim community has used the Sachar Committee report to merely complain about their plight and not take a bold step in uplifting itself, Mr. Ahmed said.

“The Sachar report has painted a poor picture of Muslim community but there are other communities in India too which are also in poor condition and they are more in number compared to Muslims”, he added.

“Muslims cannot keep on complaining all the time. The community itself has to take initiatives. The prescribed Zakath has to be channelized aptly and spending it on the education of poor Muslims is a revolutionary thought”, Mr Ahmed said, while mentioning that trend of lavish weddings should be stopped.

He also urged the youth to shun dowry and appealed to the rich to spend more on helping poor children's education.

Ziyauddin Nayyar, Trustee, KZCT, in his address said that there is no distinction in Islam between the worldly education and religious education. “The Prophet (pbuh) asked us to obtain education even if it means traveling to China? In those times, what kind of education would you have got in China? Certainly not religious”, he reasoned and asked the students to seek help from Almighty Allah and stay away from 'Shirk', besides developing a good character.

A total of 2,200 students from coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada, who had scored good marks were provided scholarships on the occasion. U T Khader, MLA, was also present.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Karnataka Forest Minister Anand Singh on Wednesday said that there was no criminal case filed directly against him.

When asked about PIL filed in the Karnataka High Court against him, Singh told media: "Some lawyer has filed a PIL against me in the High Court. I cannot stop anyone from filing the PIL."

"I have given my criminal record. There is no criminal case directly filed against me. My name is there in some cases but in 'others category'. We will see what happens," he said.

When asked about Congress leader Siddaramaiah's comments criticising him for being given the forest portfolio, Singh said: "I cannot comment on what he said against me as he is a former chief minister and very senior leader."

"Also the opposition always tries to make allegations against me. That is why he criticised me," he said.

Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Monday demanded that Forest Minister Anand Singh should either be expelled from the ministry or assigned a different portfolio.

A number of cases are pending against Singh including those registered under the Karnataka Forest Act.

Bengaluru, Mar 4: The Karnataka High Court has issued a notice to the state government in connection with the denial of retirement benefits to a retired deputy commissioner of commercial taxes who had fought against the illegal iron ore lobby.

Justice G Narendra also directed the state to respond to the notice before March 9, stating the reasons for withholding the officer’s retirement benefits.

Advocate Ramananda, appearing for the retired officer Josephat Andrews, explained that the single-judge bench also warned the government of stringent action.

Petitioner Josephat Andrews said his retirement benefits amounting to Rs 25.88 lakh were being withheld since 2014.

In 2009, Andrews detected a huge scam involving Vijaya Leasing, a company associated with former minister Gali Janardhan Reddy. Immediately he wrote to his higher officials explaining to them how the department was owed Rs 1,400 crore in taxes by the company. Immediately after that, Andrews was transferred to Bengaluru.

The media exposed the scam in 2012. Thereafter, to harass the officer, Andrews was served notice for allegedly not conducting an inspection of M/s Vijaya Leasing, which was controlled by the family of then tourism minister Gali Janardhana Reddy, on July 11, 2012.  He was discharged by a full departmental enquiry.

The petitioner was issued a second show cause notice on Jan 29, 2014 on the same charges. Before his retirement, he was docked two increments, denied promotional benefits and his pension was reduced without following due process.

He was served yet another notice with charges that he did not inspect goods vehicles, and an order was passed on April 30, 2019 reducing his pension by 5 per cent, an unprecedented punitive action.

This order was quashed by the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT), which also ordered payment of retirement benefits to Andrews within five months. However, the benefits were not released to him.

“Rule 214 of the Karnataka Civil Services Rules (KCSR) make it clear that no enquiry can be held four years after an officer’s retirement.  Belying all statutory rules and precedents of the Supreme Court, Josephat Andrews’ retirement benefits were withheld for five years. Andrews therefore approached the High Court,” advocate Ramananda explained.

Josephat Andrews recalled to Deccan Chronicle that although mining activity was in full swing in 2008, the commercial tax department maintained that it had nothing to do with mining. “I travelled to Gujarat, Maharashtra and Bellary to investigate. I found tax evasion of thousands of crores. When I visited M/s the Vijaya Leasing facility – it was operating from an old oil mill premises–within 20 minutes I got calls from Ali, a person claiming to be the personal assistant of Gali Janardhan Reddy. He told me to get out of the premises as it belonged to his boss. Then calls came from minister Sreeramulu and MLA Nagendra.

Within minutes 200-300 rowdies gathered around the building and my superior asked me to come back. Instead of filing a police complaint and forming a special team to deal with the situation, the department transferred me to Bengaluru,” he explained.

Talking about the High Court directive, Josephat Andrews said, “I have suffered a lot. Instead of getting a reward for increasing revenues by Rs 2,000 crore, I was punished.”
