Mangalore, December 24: The padayatra of CPI(M) as a protest against 'Made Snana' ritual at Kukke Subramanya temple was flagged off in Mangalore on Monday. Members of CPI(M) embarked on a three-day journey to Udupi on foot from Mangalore following the formal programme held in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office.

Speaking at the formal programme, Veerabhadra Channamalla Swamiji of Nidumamidi Mahasamsthana Mutt, Bangalore, said that 'Made Snana' is an inhuman act, which has no scientific and Vedic justification.  Rubbishing the 'belief' that skin ailments will be cured and wishes would be fulfilled if people roll over the left over food of Brahmins, the Swamiji said that such claims have no scientific basis and such a practice can on the contrary cause diseases.

Taking on Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt for his stance on 'Made Snana', the Swamiji said that Pejawar Shree is acting 'under pressure' and is behaving like a 'coward'. Refuting Pejawar Shree's claim that 'Made Snana' is originally a Dravidian ritual and part of the Tuluva culture, Channamalla Swamiji said that there has never been room for inhuman practices in Dravidian culture and the ritual of 'Made Snana' was primarily given birth to by the Brahmins. He also turned down Pejawar Shree's modified proposal of 'Yade Snana' instead of 'Made Snana', stating that rolling over the 'prasadam' of the Temple and disposing it off would be an insult to the 'prasadam' itself.

Holding the clergy class responsible for encouraging practices like 'Made Snana', the Swamiji said that it would be wrong to say that people perform 'Made Snana' at their own wish. “It actually tells you to what extent the priestly class enslaved the people, making them even roll on stale leftovers”, he said.

The 'Padayatra' began after B Madhava, Secretary, CPI(M), DK, handed over the flag to Vasanth Acharya, In-charge of the 'Padayatra'.

Sunil Kumar Bajal, Muneer Katipalla and other CPI(M) leaders were present.

Kasaragod, Apr 17: Even as this district continue to remain in the high-alert red zone category of Covid-19, Kasaragod has slowly but steadily been limping back to restraint level of the pandemic from a possible slipping into a stage-3 of community spread early this month.

Thanks to the stringent and committed measures implemented by the district administration crisscross the district besides total isolation of few localities by enforcing triple lockdown.

The district had been a Covid-19 hotspot ever since an NRI who returned from the Gulf violated quarantine protocol and travelled wide and far by meeting and contacting with several people including two MLAs of the district. That apart the irresponsible attitude of the people who broke the rules of quarantine and lockdown norms also made things go from bad to worse resulting in contributing for a near-half of the total positive cases in the state at the beginning of April.
