Mangalore, Feb 16: A Bhatkal based youth made a futile attempt to smuggle 6 kg of gold ornaments at Mangalore International Airport on Saturday.
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths seized the gold worth over Rs 1.5 crore from Abdul Haq when he arrived by an Air India Express flight from Dubai.
Based on a tip-off, the sleuths searched the accused thoroughly. Sources said he was hiding the gold ornaments inside chocolate boxes.
He was immediately arrested. Investigations are on.
Bengaluru, Aug 7: Dr Mohammed Yusuf, chairperson of the Karnataka State Board of Auqaf, passed away at a private hospital in the city today following a brief illness. He was 74.
Dr Yusuf was an industrialist and was known for his philanthropic activities.
A veterinarian, Dr Yusuf had quit the government job and set up business in Bengaluru and Dubai decades ago and has earned considerable success.
He was re-elected as Board of Auqaf chief in January this year. He had held the post more than once in the past.
He will be buried at the graveyard near Masjid-e-Muzammil which was built by himself at Govindapura, source said.
Bengaluru, May 29: The Karnataka government clarified on Thursday that it has not sought for imposing a ban on flights emanating from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
The domestic air travel was resumed in several parts of the country on May 25.
The state government also said that it has appealed to the Civil Aviation Ministry to take steps to lessen the incoming air traffic.
"If there is a huge turn out at a short span of time, there may not be adequate quarantine facilities," said the state government.
A total of 115 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Karnataka, taking the total number of cases to 2,533.
Bengaluru, Mar 12: Karnataka on Thursday confirmed another positive case of the deadly coronavirus, taking the total number of infected persons to five in the state.
According to a source from the State Health Department, the infected person, a 26-year-old patient had recently returned from Greece. He is currently under observation in an isolation ward in a city hospital.
