Mangalore, Aug 7: As per the ritual every year, residents near Pachanady dumping yard continued to cover their noses with towels this year as well. Continuous foul smell emanating from the dumping yard spoiled the daily routine of residents of Santhosh Nagar and Pachanady this month.

It is learnt that since two months, the waste generated in the compost plant opposite the dumping yard at Pachanady has not been decomposed. Since there was heavy downpour of rain, water stored in compost bins and storage of wet waste for long durations caused an unbearable stench. Negligence of Mangalore City Corporation for a long time in taking alternation measures to clear the plant and avoid the stink has irked public here. Residents of the region started protesting against the MCC and demanding for a clean environment.

“Since waste management is not being done properly, the stink has spread to every house in Santhosh Nagar, Basavalingappa Nagar, Pachanady and nearby areas. Waste is spread all over the road as MCC vehicles carry waste in open-cabin vehicles and even medical waste falls on the roads. The compost plant is filled with rain water and the wet waste is stinking. This has spoiled the health of many and we have to endure it by covering our noses”, said Sudhakar, a resident of Pachanady.

Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, councillor Kavita Sanil who joined residents here said, “MCC is not taking care in waste management and the waste water stored inside the compost plant gives out a foul smell. The company which has taken the contract has to clear the waste water stored in tanks but so far it has not been done. Waste water flows outside the yard and joins water wells and agriculture land nearby”, she complained.

Each time, people receive assurances and promises, but no action to clear the waste water has been taken so far. Every day, the water and the area are being polluted, while the landfill method has also failed here. MCC has to build high compound walls, waste water storage tank and green plantation around the yard to avoid foul smell. Until these things are done, the stink cannot be stopped and people will continue protesting, said Kavita Sanil.

Kochi, Jul 12: The two main accused in Kerala gold smuggling case, Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair have been arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Both the accused will be produced before NIA court in Kochi, Kerala on Sunday.

Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair were detained by NIA from Bengaluru, Karnataka on Saturday.

Swapna is named as the second accused and Sandeep has been named as the fourth accused in the FIR taken by NIA and both have been slapped with Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, (UAPA) along with first accused Sarith PS and third accused Fazil Fareed
Already, Sarith PS was arrested by the Customs, while Fazil Fareed is still at large.

NIA officials yesterday conducted a detailed interrogation of Sarith after reaching the customs office in Kochi where he is in custody.

The Customs Department had on July 5 seized 30 kg gold worth Rs 15 crore concealed in diplomatic consignment at the Thiruvananthapuram international airport.

The NIA on Friday registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Sarith Kumar, Swapna Suresh and Sandeep Nair, the three persons allegedly involved in the case.

The agency has charged them with offences under various sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

Swapna Suresh was on the run following the gold seizure. She was employed in Space Park and Kerala State Information Technology Infrastructure Limited (KSITL), which comes under the IT department, a portfolio held by Kerala Chief Minister. She was ousted after being named an accused in the case.

Sarith Kumar, an accused in the case who had previously worked as a public relations officer (PRO) in UAE Consulate-General's office in Thiruvananthapuram, was arrested on July 6.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: After the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) reduced the syllabi for Classes 9 to 12 due to COVID-19 pandemic, the Karnataka government has followed the suit. The Department of Public Instruction has omitted the chapters on legendary south Indian rulers Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan from the textbooks of Class 7 in their attempt to reduce syllabus for state board schools by 30 per cent.

The department, however, has decided to retain similar chapters on Tipu Sultan in 6th and 10th Classes, though the syllabus in text books for all classes from 1 to 10th has been trimmed.

The trimmed textbooks uploaded on the website of the Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT) by Karnataka state Textbook Society revealed removal of chapters on Tipu Sultan for the seventh grade.

Justifying the decision, officials said, "students study similar chapters in Class 6 and more in the 10th grade." Yet another senior official from the Text Book Society said, "Trimming does not mean we have removed half of the syllabus from textbooks. It is only keeping in mind the repetition we have condensed the chapters. In case students study about a particular dynasty in higher grades, then the same had been removed from lower grades."

A few months ago, there was an uproar over dropping of content on Tipu Sultan and MLAs from the ruling BJP also demanded the same and petitioned to the Chief Minister. Even an expert committee led by Prof Baraguru Ramachandrappa suggested to not drop any content on the historic figure. However, the department still decided to drop lessons from one of the classes while keeping the syllabus short for the next 120 active academic days.

Earlier this month, a controversy had erupted over the CBSE's decision to omit topics like federalism, secularism, citizenship, etc while reducing the syllabus for Classes 9 to 12. The education board had issued a detailed clarification later, stating that topics claimed to be dropped "are either being covered by the rationalised syllabus or in the Alternative Academic Calendar of NCERT".

"The rationalisation of syllabus up to 30 per cent has been undertaken by the Board for nearly 190 subjects of class 9 to 12 for the academic session 2020-21 as a one-time measure only. The objective is to reduce the exam stress of students due to the prevailing health emergency situation and prevent learning gaps," it said.

Last week, the Congress in Uttar Pradesh expressed its concern over 'deliberate and systematic' deletions of chapters related to the freedom struggle and the party's role in it from the Class 10-12 syllabi of the Secondary Education Board.
