KUD to offer dual PG degree courses

Dharwad, Mar 26: Karnatak University-Dharwad will now offer dual postgraduate degrees. The meeting of the Academic Council held here on Monday approved the proposal for introducing dual postgraduate degree programmes.

Vice-Chancellor H.B. Walikar said that the University Grants Commission (UGC) had told the varsities that they could opt for dual postgraduate degree programmes in the interest of students.

Under dual postgraduate degree programmes, students can take up one regular postgraduate course and take up an additional postgraduate course on external basis. To further help the students, it has been decided that the student opting for this programme can seek external course from any other varsity or the parent university itself.

This programme aims at helping the candidates to complete two postgraduate programmes in two years. This is not a mandatory programme, but students willing to put in more efforts can certainly make use of this dual postgraduate degree programmes, he added.

Appointments

Prof. Walikar announced that the varsity would appoint 15 guest librarians. There are over 26 Assistant Librarian posts vacant for the past few years. He said that the previous Vice-Chancellor had sought permission of the State government to appoint Assistant Librarians and it was proposed to pay their salaries from the varsity"s internal resources, but the government has not yet responded to the proposal.

Now, once again a fresh proposal would be submitted to the government seeking permission to appoint 15 guest librarians.

Prof. Walikar said that Governor H.R. Bhardwaj had instructed the varsity authorities to expand their area of operation and offer specialised courses. So, the varsity has taken the decision to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with premier institutes and offer specialised courses designed by the university staff in their respective educational institutes. This exercise would help the varsity to extend its boundaries and facilitate students to get KU affiliations to their courses.

Fee exception

Prof. Walikar said, last year students from backward and minority communities pursing undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the varsities had been given fee exemption totalling Rs. 1.05 cr. This year, the fee exemption stands at Rs. 1.36 crore.

New Delhi, Jul 3: The Delhi High Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea challenging Karnataka government's decision to impose a 25 percent domicile reservation in the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru.

A division bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Subramonium Prasad observed that the impugned law is passed by the State of Karnataka, and the respondent university is also situated in Karnataka.

The court granted liberty to the petitioner to move the appropriate forum with their grievances.

The Karnataka Assembly had passed the National Law School of India (Amendment) Act, 2020 in March this year, which provided a 25 per cent horizontal reservation for students of Karnataka in the NLSIU.

The High Court observed that the main contesting parties in the present case were the NLSIU and the Karnataka Government. As the court did not show any interest in entertaining the plea, the petitioner withdrew the plea.

The Department of Business Administration organised a Webinar on Career Planning and Development for the Under Graduate and PUC students of various colleges on 23 May 2020. Sr Dr Venissa A.C, Principal, inaugurated the programme and conveyed her best wishes. Mr Abhilash K, Managing Director of Abhijnya Education Private Limited was the Resource speaker.

Mr Abhilash said that a student should assess themselves, evaluate their career skills, set career goals in order to implement and maximise their career plan. He listed out the various courses available after completion of PUC/Degree. He also said that the students need to create their own future, assess their strengths, build personality and explore various options available to build their own career. He gave a few tips on how to prepare for the various competitive exams and manage time.

The Webinar had 125 participants from various colleges who actively participated by asking their doubts on Career Planning. The programme was conducted on Google Meet. Dr Neethu Suraj, Assistant Professor of BBA welcomed the Resource speaker and the participants, Mr Elson Dsouza Assistant Professor of BBA delivered the vote of thanks and Mrs Sabina Dsouza HOD of BBA coordinated the programme.

The core objective of the new National Education Policy (NEP), which has given freedom for amalgamation of different concepts, will be translated into action through the National Curriculum Framework, CBSE director said on Friday.

CBSE Director Biswajit Saha made the comments during an e-conclave on the new NEP organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“The core objective of the policy will be translated into action through the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), which needs more participatory approach. The policy has given freedom for amalgamation of different concepts and multidisciplinary approach. The NCF will give a roadmap for implementation of reforms laid down in the policy,” he said.

Saha said the training required for competency-based education and learning outcomes can be achieved with progressive participation of stakeholders.

“There could be a debate about the training required for competency-based education and learning outcomes but once we have decided we want to do it, it can be achieved with progressive participation of stakeholders. It is a forward-looking policy,” the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) director said.

The NEP approved by the Union Cabinet replaces the 34-year-old National Policy on Education framed in 1986 and is aimed at paving the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems to make India a global knowledge superpower.

Choice between 3 or 4 year undergraduate courses, multiple entry and exit options in degree courses, adding 3.5 crore seats in higher education institutions, which will now have a single regulator, discontinuation of M.Phil programmes and fixation of fees are among the higher education reforms outlined in the new NEP.
