Rajiv Gandhi's assassin scores 91% in class 12 exam

Chennai, May 22: A G Perarivalan, who is one of the three convicts on death row in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, has scored more than 91% in the Tamil Nadu class 12 examinations. Perarivalan scored 1,096 out of 1,200 marks and tops the list of 35 prisoners who successfully wrote the examination in March.

Perarivalan is facing the gallows, along with Murugan and Santhan. The three had sought a stay on their execution on the ground that the President had taken 11 years in deciding their mercy pleas after the apex court rejected their petition in August last year.

Perarivalan was 19 years when he was picked up by the CBI on June 11, 1991. He was charged with assisting the assassination by buying a nine-volt battery to assemble a bomb for Sivarasan, one of the assassins. Perarivalan is the youngest accused in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. An avid reader, Perarivalan has been fond of poetry and the teachings of Tamil saint poet Thiruvalluvar.

Another inmate Soundarapandian in Madurai prison has scored 1080 marks (90%) and a prisoner in Puzhal prison Munusamy has scored 988 (82.33%) in the class 12 examination. Tamil Nadu education department released the results of the Class 12 examinations on Tuesday.

Additional director general of police (ADGP - Prisons) S K Dogra said he was very happy with the resutls. "In 2011, only 19 prisoners took the class 12 exam, . This year the number doubled. All the 35 inmates w ho wrote the exam have passed ," he said.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 31: People offered Eid-al-Adha namaz while ensuring social distancing norms at mosques in Thiruvananthapuram and Mallapuram on Friday.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had on Thursday announced that the Eid-al-Adha prayers can be offered in mosques of the state on Friday with a limited number of people due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kerala is celebrating the festival of Eid-al-Adha on Friday.

Eid al-Adha or Bakrid, also known as "Sacrifice Feast" is marked by sacrificing an animal, usually a sheep or a goat to prove their devotion and love for Allah. Post the sacrifice, devotees distribute the offering to family, friends, neighbours and especially to the poor and the needy.

New Delhi, Mar 29: The total number of COVID-19 positive cases rose to 1024 in the country, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

"The total number of COVID-19 positive cases rise to 1024 in India including 901 active cases, 96 cured/discharged/migrated people and 27 deaths," Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown to stem the spread of COVID-19, which has left thousands dead around the world.

New Delhi, Jan 31: Slamming the BJP over the Jamia firing incident, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said such incidents were possible with the ruling party's leaders inciting people to shoot, and asked Prime minister Narendra Modi to answer whether he stands with violence or non-violence.   

Her attack on the government comes a day after tensions in the Jamia area spiralled on Thursday after a man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters, injuring a student, before walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting "Yeh lo aazadi" amid heavy police presence in the area.

"When the BJP government ministers and party leaders incite people to shoot, give provocative speeches, then all this becomes possible. The Prime Minister should answer what kind of a Delhi he wants to build?" Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

Does the PM stand with violence or non-violence, she asked.

"Does he stand with development or with anarchy?" the Congress general secretary said.
