Booted out of Jet Airways, expat pilots may land at strike-hit Air India

New Delhi, June 1: Air India will turn to expat pilots sacked recently by Jet Airways to beef up its dwindling numbers in a last-ditch attempt to normalize operations devastated by a 24-day strike by pilots.

"Air India seeks to operate a small international schedule from now on with the help of 200 pilots, for which it is looking to hire 50-60 expats sacked by Jet Airways recently," a senior official in the civil aviation ministry told ET.

The stricken national carrier is attempting to restore some semblance of normalcy to its crippled international operations, and improve financial performance to meet the milestones set by the government as a condition for the 30,000-crore bailout package. Money will be released only if the airline meets certain performance targets, such as dropping unprofitable routes.

The strike has cost the debt-laden airline more than Rs 330 crore in revenues and is worsening an already difficult financial situation. Air India's losses stand at Rs 20,000 crore and it has a debt of over Rs 43,000 crore.

Jet Airways, India's largest airline by market share, has decided to terminate the services of 72 expats after the near-collapse of Kingfisher Airlines forced several pilots of the Vijay Mallya-promoted carrier to seek jobs elsewhere.

Jet, which reported a doubling of losses in the fourth quarter ended March 2012, is looking to cut costs by hiring locals. Salaries of expat pilots are higher than those of their Indian counterparts.

Air India, whose operations have been affected by the 24-day strike by the 400-strong Indian Pilots' Guild (IPG), is operating a curtailed international schedule with nearly 120 executive/management pilots. The airline has sacked 101 of the 400 agitating pilots, who are demanding exclusive rights to fly Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The airline has not taken delivery of the aircraft so far.

However, after the terminations, the pilots have piped down.

Striking pilots will become redundant

The striking Air India pilots have agreed to resume work if their colleagues are either taken back immediately or an assurance is given to this effect. The government, however, has rejected this demand saying the pilots should join without any preconditions.

"AI has already got in touch with some of the available pilots and if the IPG members do not rejoin, they will become redundant as Air India is working on a plan to fly only on profitable international routes. So our requirement for pilots is going to come down," the official said.

Flying on profitable routes is one of the milestones for Air India and the civil aviation ministry recently set up an oversight committee to decide the routes that would be shut and those that would continue. The airline's losses have been blamed on high costs and a large concentration of unprofitable routes.

Air India's decision puts further pressure on the striking pilots, whose numbers had started thinning due to strong government pressure. Some pilots have returned to work and there is a feeling of inevitability among those still on strike.

There is a shortage of commanders in India and domestic airlines heavily depend on expatriates to fulfill their needs. But a few members of the IPG, who did not wish to be identified, agreed there would be no place for them if 400 pilots were to start looking for jobs. About 500 expat pilots are employed by various domestic airlines, but their services are likely to be terminated by December 2013.

Mumbai, Jul 30: Counterfeiting incidents have increased 24 per cent in the country in 2019 over the previous year, creating an over Rs 1 lakh crore hole in the economy, according to a report.

The report also said counterfeiters are having a free run due to the pandemic-driven disruptions to organised supply chains and the resultant spike in consumer demand.

According to the report by ASPA, a self-regulated industry body of anti-counterfeiting and traceability solutions providers, counterfeiting has risen steadily in the last few years, and exploiting the pandemic as a cover for their activities.

Between February and April 2020, over 150 incidents of counterfeiting cases were reported, mostly about fake PPE kits, sanitisers and masks taking advantage of the high demand for these products, it noted.

"There was a 24 per cent increase in counterfeiting in 2019 over 2018, leading to the loss of more than Rs 1 lakh crore to the overall economy," said Nakul Pasricha, president of Authentication Solution Providers Association.

The association works with global authorities like the International Hologram Manufacturers Association, Counterfeit Intelligence Bureau of the Interpol, and domestic industry lobbies like Ficci, he said.

Counterfeiting is a universal issue and is 3.3 per cent of global trade, according to the OECD data, impacting social and economic development across the world.

The report lists the currency, FMCG, alcohol, pharma, documents, agriculture, infrastructure, automotive, tobacco, lifestyle and apparel, as the 10 sectors impacted most by counterfeiting.

Among these, currency, alcohol and FMCG continue to be the top three sectors with the highest counterfeiting in the last two years. The FMCG sector is most vulnerable, as counterfeit incidents rose 63 per cent between 2018 (79) and 2019 when the reported cases jumped to 129.

Within the states, the fakers have a free run in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bengal, Punjab, Jharkhand, Delhi, Gujarat, and Uttarakhand, calling for urgent actions to frame anti-counterfeiting policy measures.

According to the report, UP continues to be on top followed by Bihar, Rajasthan, and together these three states represent almost 45 per cent of all counterfeiting reported in the last two years.

What is more alarming is that counterfeiting is not limited to high-end luxury items today, as common everyday items as fake cumin seeds, mustard cooking oil, ghee, hair oils, soaps, baby care vaccines and medicines are aplenty in the markets.

"There is an urgent need for building and nurturing authentication ecosystems in the country with the active involvement and active participation of all stakeholders," said Pasricha.

New Delhi, Jan 31: Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi on Friday said she will continue her fight till the convicts in the 2012 gangrape and murder case are hanged, shortly after a Delhi court postponed the execution of death warrants till further order.

Devi told reporters her "hopes are dashed" but she will continue her fight.

"These convicts have no right to live. We keep getting disappointed by the system. I will continue my fight till the convicts are hanged," she said.

A Delhi court postponed the execution of death warrants of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case till further order.

Additional sessions judge Dharmender Rana passed the order on a plea by the convicts seeking a stay on their execution on Saturday, February 1.

Devi said because of the loopholes in law the "criminals' lawyers had the audacity to challenge me in court that they will not be hanged".

The black warrants for execution of the death sentence against Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma, Akshay Kumar and Mukesh Kumar Singh, were issued on January 17.

A 23-year-old physiotherapy intern who came to be known as "Nirbhaya" (the fearless one) was gangraped and savagely assaulted on the night of December 16, 2012, in a moving bus in South Delhi. She died of her injuries a fortnight later in a Singapore hospital.

New Delhi, Jul 18: National carrier Air India on Friday said that it is in a ‘very challenging financial’ situation and is taking recourse to several initiatives, with a view to ensuring the continuance of its operations.

The airline, in a statement, noted that it has introduced the partially voluntary 'Leave Without Pay' (LWP) scheme on July 14.

"The scheme primarily enables employees to avail the benefits of proceeding on leave without pay on a voluntary basis. The LWP scheme has been introduced for grant of leave without pay and allowances for permanent employees for a period of six months or two years, which is extendable upto 5 years," the statement said.

"Air India had brought out similar scheme earlier... Several hundred employees have, in the past, availed of the LWP Scheme."

As per the statement, in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there may be employees who are unable to attend their office duties in person on account of personal reasons.

"The LWP scheme enables employees to take a break from their office responsibility for a defined period of time with the approval of the management, while retaining their employment with the company," the statement said.

"They will continue to avail facilities such as passage, medical and housing at specified rates."

Accordingly, the LWP scheme provides the opportunity to employees to take up alternative employment with the approval of the management during the period of the said leave, the airline said.

"The LWP scheme is a win-win situation for both the management as well as employees as it provides flexibility to employees and simultaneously reduces the wage bill for the company," the statement said.

"It is important to note here that the Covid-19 outbreak has very seriously impacted the airline sector and currently, the airline operations of the company are a small fraction of the prior Covid level operations."

The airline said that employees are encouraged to apply for availing the benefit of the scheme, in the prescribed format, by August 15.

"The only addition in this scheme as compared to the earlier LWP scheme is that the management can pass an order requiring the employees to go on leave for a period of six months or two years (extendable upto 5 years) compulsorily taking into consideration 'Suitability, Efficiency, Competence, Quality of performance, Health, Non-availability of employee and Redundancy'," the statement said.

Furthermore, the airline said that this provision has been introduced for use, "very sparingly", with a view to ensuring that the overall efficiency of the organisation, improves and the management will ensure that this will be implemented with complete fairness and transparency as per prescribed procedure.

Consequent to the announcement of the scheme, Air India unions are discussing their strategy against the move which might involve legal recourse.

An Air India union leader on Friday told IANS: "This is going to affect the livelihood of many. Why not every employee of AI take LWP a few days every month. This way the burden can be shared."

"The motive of the top management is to save their money by snatching money from lower employees."

According to Air India PIM document, as on November 1, 2019, the airline, on a standalone basis (without subsidiaries), had around 14,000 employees, including fixed term contract staff.

The development comes as the Centre has re-initiated the airline's divestment plan with new norms.

Interestingly, this time, it has sweetened the deal by substantially reducing the debt on the airline's account books and offered a 100 per cent stake in the loss-making airline.

The last date for bid submission to acquire Air India has also been extended to August 31.
