Team Anna spreading canards about me: PM

June 5, 2012

Mohan__AnnaNew Delhi, June 5: First, Congress president Sonia Gandhi lit into the Opposition; then a combative Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took on Team Anna, without naming it, for the second time in a week, sharply attacking its members for spreading “canards and falsehoods” about him and his senior Ministers. On Monday, as the extended Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party's apex decision-making body, met at the Parliament House Annexe here, the two top leaders concentrated their firepower not just on their political rivals, but on all those holding them responsible for a range of ills, from corruption to policy paralysis.

But if the duo's sights were set on the government's critics, most of the 42 speakers at the day-long meeting, CWC sources told The Hindu, stressed that charges of corruption and high prices — including the recent hike in the petrol price — were together devastating the government and the party. This even though the Prime Minister spoke of his government taking “action on multiple fronts” to tackle “the menace of corruption” and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee explained how the prices of petroleum products could be rationalised with the cooperation of State governments, while giving the CWC members an overview of the grim economic situation and the steps planned to reverse it. Member after member said it was getting difficult to justify to their constituents the massive hike in petrol price.

Though there was no dissent, there was a great deal of candour, reflecting the desire in the party for changes that could dramatically lift the Congress' sagging fortunes.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, CWC sources said, suggested another “Kamaraj Plan” (in 1963, senior Congress leader K. Kamaraj had suggested that all senior party leaders quit their ministerial posts to devote their energies to re-vitalise the Congress). Offering his own resignation as a start, Mr. Hooda urged Ms. Sonia Gandhi to take tough decisions like Indira Gandhi.

Several speakers, including special invitee Mohinder Singh Kaypee, also underscored the need for younger leaders to come forward, with CWC permanent invitee and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi saying Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi must play a larger role in the party. Asked whether the subject of greater responsibilities for younger people was raised, Mr. Mukherjee told journalists: “The discussion was informative; members were candid. Younger leaders will have to come forward — the older chaps cannot continue for ever.”

Coalition blues

The problems of dealing with coalition partners also surfaced, with Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Manikrao Thakre and his West Bengal counterpart Pradip Bhattacharya complaining about the Nationalist Congress Party and the Trinamool Congress — parties with which the Congress shares power in the two States: the two men, separately, the CWC sources said, expressed the view that the Congress should go it alone and build up its own organisations.

New Delhi, Jan 7: A fringe right-wing group calling itself the Hindu Raksha Dal has purportedly taken responsibility for the attack on students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in a video posted on social media.

The video, which was posted on social media on Monday and has gone viral since then, shows a man identifying himself as Pinki Chaudhary saying that those who resort  to “anti-national activities” will be treated in the same way that JNU students and faculty were.

He later told news channels that others involved in "anti-national activities" would face similar attacks.

There was no immediate reaction from the police on Chaudhury's claims.

“For several years, JNU has been a bastion of communists and we will not tolerate it. Hindu Raksha Dal, Bhupendra Tomar, Pinki Chaudhury take the responsibility of what has happened in JNU...all of them were our volunteers. Those who cannot do such work for Mother India don't have the right to live in this country,” Chaudhary is seen saying in the video.

“We are always ready to sacrifice our lives for Mother India. We will not tolerate anyone who speaks against the religion,” he added.

Efforts to reach the man were unsuccessful: his phone was switched off.

More than 35 students were injured Sunday when a masked mob went on the rampage, attacking students and professors and vandalising property. The JNUSU has accused the RSS-affiliated ABVP volunteers of attacking the students.

New Delhi, Feb 3: In the third such incident inside of a week, two unidentified persons opened fire outside Gate No. 5 of Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday night, the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) said.

A statement issued by the committee, a group comprising students and alumni of the university formed to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, said the attackers were on a red Rcooty.

No one was injured in the attack. One of the miscreants was wearing a red jacket, the statement said.

"Firing has taken place at Gate No.5 of Jamia Millia Islamia right now by two unidentified persons. As per report, one of them was wearing a red jacket and driving a red Scooty having vehicle no. 1532 or 1534," the statement said.

Police said they were verifying the JCC's claims.

Asim Mohammed Khan, former Congress MLA from Okhla, said the incident occurred around 11.30 pm. "We heard the gunshot. That is when we stepped out to see and the two men left on a Scooty," a student said.

"We have taken down the vehicle number and called police," he added.

This is the third firing incident in the Jamia Nagar area in a week.

On Thursday, a minor fired at anti-CAA protesters marching towards Rajghat, injuring a student.

Two days later, a 25-year-old fired two rounds in air in Shaheen Bagh in Jamia Nagar. No one was hurt in the incident.

The incident on Sunday night triggered panic in the area. A police vehicle had reached the spot after the incident but was chased away by angry students.

Hundreds of students and locals gathered outside the university.

Many raised slogans against the Delhi Police. They also staged a dharna outside the Jamia Nagar police station.

Shezad Ahmed, a JMI student and resident of Zakir Nagar, said they were not even allowed to protest peacefully.

"We are not going to be deterred by such incidents. We will continue with our protest," he added.

Hyderabad, Feb 28: The Cyber Crime Police of Hyderabad has registered an FIR against social media platforms- WhatsApp, Twitter and TikTok- for allowing people to spread anti-national activities, as per a complaint filed by one S Srishailam.

Raghuveer, Additional DCP Cyber Crimes said," We have received a court referred complaint, which was filed by S Srisailam in the concerned court stating that social media platforms Whatsapp, Twitter and TikTok are allowing few people to spread anti-national activities and videos."

S Srisailam also claimed that a few people are running a campaign against the CAA on social media platforms to spread hatred which in turn is causing damage to national integrity.

"In this regard, because the complaint was referred by a court a case has been registered against Whatsapp, Twitter & TikTok under the relevant section of Indian Penal Code and IT Act and took up the investigation," the DCP added.

He also added that the police cannot take action against these platforms as they are not banned in India but can initiate action against persons who intentionally indulge in spreading hatred.

"The police are conducting the investigation and if allegations of the complainant are found to be false then we will drop the case. We had received the case one week ago," informed the DCP.
