New Delhi, July 17: India Tuesday said it will initiate appropriate action in the killing of its fisherman by personnel on board a US naval vessel off Dubai Monday evening even as Washington conveyed its condolences over the death and ordered a probe.

India is ascertaining facts into the shooting by personnel onboard USNS Rappahannock, a fuel re-supply ship, on a small motor vessel with the Indians near Jebel Ali port, an external affairs ministry spokesperson said here.

The incident also left three other Indians injured.

"We will stay in regular touch with US and UAE authorities to ascertain full facts and take appropriate further action in the matter," the spokesperson said.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of life of the Indian fisherman and the injuries sustained by the others. Our thoughts are with their families," the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, US ambassador to India Nancy Powell telephoned Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai Tuesday morning to convey her "regret" for the loss of life and assured that the US government would conduct full investigation into the shooting.

In a statement, the US embassy in New Delhi conveyed its "condolences to the families of the crew of the small motor vessel which came under fire from the USNS Rappahannock on July 16 after the vessel disregarded non lethal warnings and rapidly approached the US ship.

It also said that the incident is being probed.

The Indian embassy in Washington has been in touch with the US government since Monday, the spokesperson said.

The Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi too is working with local authorities to carry out "full investigation" into the circumstances leading to this "unfortunate and tragic" incident, he said.

India has also asked its acting consul general in Jebel Ali to provide all necessary assistance.

The US ship opened fire Monday evening on a fishing boat as the latter "ignored the warnings and came too close", Xinhua quoted sources as saying.

External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted that the Indian embassy in the US is in touch with US agencies "regarding the incident in Gulf and is assured of full investigation into tragic incident".

He also tweeted that India's Acting Consul General in Dubai has rushed to Jebel Ali port "to provide necessary assistance to Indian nationals involved in Gulf incident" and that India's ambassador in Abu Dhabi has requested the UAE authorities to probe the incident.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is also probing the incident. Tariq Ahmed Al Haidan, the assistant to the UAE foreign minister for political affairs, said: "The concerned UAE authorities are investigating the shooting incident."

India is already prosecuting two Italian marines in a Kochi court for killing two Indian fishermen off Kerala coast in the Arabian Sea in February.

Jehanabad, Jan 27: The police here carried out a raid at the ancestral house of anti-CAA activist Sharjeel Imam, who has been slapped with a sedition case in the national capital for alleged inflammatory speeches he gave at Shaheen Bagh and the Jamia Milia Islamia, a senior official said on Monday.

According to Superintendent of Police, Jehanabad, Manish Kumar, Imams house in Kako police station area was raided late on Sunday night following "help sought by central agencies" which are investigating the cases lodged against the JNU research scholar.

Imam was not found at his house but two of his relatives and their driver were detained for interrogation and let off thereafter, the SP said.

A graduate in computer science from IIT-Mumbai, Sharjeel Imam had shifted to Delhi for pursuing research at the Centre for Historical Studies, JNU.

He was slapped with a sedition case after his alleged speeches went viral on the social media wherein he was heard speaking about Assam's possible secession from the country in the wake of the Citienship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Earlier, he had been booked on similar charges at a police station in Aligarh for a speech he delivered on the AMU campus.

Besides, a case under the stringent anti-terror law UAPA has been registered against him at Assam.

Imams late father Akbar Imam was a local JD(U) leader who had unsuccessfully contested an assembly election in his lifetime.

Reacting to the developments, his distraught mother Afshan Rahim told the media, "My son is innocent. He is a bright young man and not a thief or a pickpocket. I swear in the name of God that I do not know about his whereabouts. But I can guarantee that upon learning about the cases, he will appear before the investigating agencies and fully cooperate in the probe."

She said that it has been a long time since she met her son though she had a telephonic conversation with him a few weeks ago.

"He was obviously disturbed by the CAA and fears of the National Register of Citiznes (NRC) about being implemented across the country which, he said, would affect not just Muslims but all poor people," she said.

In fact, after 15 days of Shaheen Bagh protest, he had asked the agitators there to withdraw and watch the situation for a month, and then decide on the further course of action, she said. "But they refused to relent. He was calling for a 'chakkajam' (road blockade). He is just a kid and not capable of instigating people for secession," she added.

New Delhi, Jan 31: Slamming the BJP over the Jamia firing incident, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said such incidents were possible with the ruling party's leaders inciting people to shoot, and asked Prime minister Narendra Modi to answer whether he stands with violence or non-violence.

Her attack on the government comes a day after tensions in the Jamia area spiralled on Thursday after a man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters, injuring a student, before walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting "Yeh lo aazadi" amid heavy police presence in the area.

"When the BJP government ministers and party leaders incite people to shoot, give provocative speeches, then all this becomes possible. The Prime Minister should answer what kind of a Delhi he wants to build?" Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

Does the PM stand with violence or non-violence, she asked.

"Does he stand with development or with anarchy?" the Congress general secretary said.

Idukki, Jun 8: Devikulam MLA S Rajendran from CPM along with supporters staged a protest by blocking the Munnar-Udumalpet interstate highway here on Monday, demanding that action to be taken to prevent wild elephants entering into human settlements and destroying properties.

The protest started at 9.30 am and demand was made that senior forest officials should give them assurance of putting an end to the problem.

A police team led by Munnar Deputy Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramesh Kumar was camping in the area.

Wild elephants from the nearby forest are frequently trespassing into Munnar and last night two elephants destroyed a vegetable shop in the town.

If it was a lone elephant that the locals nicknamed as Padayappa that used to enter the human settlement, now along with him a baby elephant is also coming to the town at night.

The locals have named the second elephant Ganeshan. Though there were instances of them destroying crops and eating from vegetable shops, till now the duo has not attacked humans.
