Modi announces formation of new district

Ahmedabad, August 14: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has announced the formation of a new Gir-Somnath district along with a slew of other measures for the fishermen community.

In an apparent attempt to woo the fishermen community ahead of the state elections, Mr. Modi on Monday announced an increase of daily allowance from Rs 50 per day to Rs 150 for families of fishermen who are lodged in Pakistani jails.

“A new district will be formed soon and will be called Gir-Somnath and will have six talukas,” Mr. Modi said at the Sagarkhedu fishermen community meet held by the state government in the Somnath temple town of Junagadh district in Saurashtra.

He announced the constitution of a high-level committee headed by the chief secretary to form the new district. The new Gir-Somnath district is likely to be formed on January 26, next year.

At present, Gir and the famous temple town of Somnath are in Junagadh district of Saurashtra region of the state. Six talukas of Junagdh will form the new district of Gir-Somnath.

Other announcements by Mr. Modi include a Rs 200-crore diesel subsidy on VAT for nearly 11,000 mechanised boats to be borne entirely by the state government.

He announced setting up of a new fishing port at Sutrapada and future development of other fishing ports in the Saurashtra coast, from Jafrabad in the east, to Bhadeli and Okha in the west.

Under Mission Mangalam Project, he announced a plan to set up 5,000 ‘sakhi mandalis’ to provide training and bank linkage to women to grow see-weed for economic empowerment.

He laid the foundation stone for four water supply and underground sewer projects for Veraval, Kodinar and Una towns costing Rs 228 crore.

Ayodhya, Aug 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday recalled the significance of the path of 'maryada' associated with Lord Ram in the backdrop of the situation created by COVID-19 and emphasised the importance of social distancing and wearing face masks.

He said that the current situation demands 'maryada' should be 'do gaz ki doori, mask hai zaroori' and exhorted everyone to follow it.

In his speech after laying the foundation stone of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the Prime Minister said the temple of Lord Ram will inspire and guide humans for ages to come.

He said that the path of `maryada' followed by Lord Ram is all the more necessary today in the situation created by COVID-19.

"The `maryada' (need) today is do gaj ki doori, mask hai jaroori (keep distance of two yards, wear mask). The Almighty may keep all the citizens healthy and happy, this is my prayer. The blessings of Mother Sita and Shri Ram be always there on the citizens," he said.

The Prime Minister termed the occasion as historic and said that India is starting a glorious chapter when people across the country are excited and emotional to have finally achieved what they had been waiting for centuries.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 21: Not just in China, but in Kerala also robot is now playing a key role in the health workers' fight against COVID-19, thanks to the innovative spirit of a group of young minds and the support of the state Health Department.

Named "Nightingale-19", the robot is deployed to provide food and medicines among patients at the district coronavirus centre in Ancharakandi in Kannur district where a large number of cases have been reported.

The special display facility, attached to it, also allows patients to communicate with health workers and their relatives if necessary, the health minister's office here said.

Designed by the students of Chemberi Vimal Jyothi Engineering College with the support of the Health Department, the remote control-operated robot can carry food and water for at least six persons at a stretch.

The machine, which can travel up to one kilometre, distributes food, water and medicine in each room, a department statement said.

The robot would be disinfected after each use, it said.

Health Minister K K Shailaja inaugurated the new venture from here recently through the robot's video facility, the statement added.

Robots have been put to use in other parts of the country to help in the health workers' fight against COVID- 19.

New Delhi, Feb 11: AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has won from New Delhi assembly seat. He polled 46,758 votes, which is 61.1 per cent of total votes polled in the high profile constituency.

Kejriwal defeated Sunil Kumar Yadav of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who polled 25,061 votes, which is 32.75 per cent of total votes polled. Congress candidate Romesh Sabhawarl could get only 3,220 votes.

So far, the AAP has won 55 seats and is leading on seven seats. The BJP has won seven seats and is leading on two. The Congress is nowhere in the reckoning.

As per the details on the website of Election Commission of India at 8.27 pm on Tuesday, the AAP has secured 53.60 per cent votes, BJP 38.49 per cent, BSP 0.71 per cent, CPI 0.02 per cent, CPI-M 0.01 per cent, Congress 4.27 per cent, JDU 0.90 per cent, LJP 0.35 per cent, NCP 0.02 per cent, and NOTA 0.46 per cent.
