New Delhi, August 21: BJP today defended its decision to demand Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's resignation in the alleged irregularities in coal blocs allocation, saying it owes it to the people in the wake of "regular occurence" of scams and insisted it will continue to press for his removal.

"In both Houses of Parliament today, we demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's resignation. We will continue to strongly press for it as the coal allocation issue is not an isolated incident.

The 2G spectrum issue, Commonwealth Games scam, public-private partnership issue of airports and now the coal blocks," Deputy Leader of BJP in Rajya Sabha Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters.

He alleged these cases demonstrate that the Manmohan Singh government is one of "scam, shame, scandals, corruption and loot and that BJP is levelling these charges with all responsibility.

Claims by Congress of having taken action against corruption are "absolutely hollow", BJP charged. The party maintained that it was due to opposition pressure, media campaign and intervention of the judiciary that action was taken.

On coal allocation issue, BJP said Singh had held the Coal portfolio for five years since UPA came to power in 2004 and is hence responsible for the loss of revenue of Rs 1.86 lakh crore estimated by CAG.

He indicated BJP will continue to press for Singh's resignation in Parliament in the coming days.

"If scams keep happening with such regularity, we owe it to the people to demand the Prime Minister's resignation," Prasad said.

"This whole alibi of shifting the blame on states (on coal allocation) is completely untenable and motivated," Prasad said.

BJP also rubbished Congress' claim that the screening committee formed to look into the coal block allocations was opposed to auctions. Prasad said the decision has to get the assent of the PM and hence he is complicit.

Prasad said the decision to go for auction of coal blocks was taken in 2004 but it has not been implemented though eight years have passed.

The BJP leader said though the process did not start, the value of shares went up bringing "windfall gains" to those who were allocated the coal blocks.

Asked why BJP was not agreeing to a debate on coal allocation issue, the party maintained it does not bear the required results as discussions had taken place in Parliament on 2G spectrum issue, alleged involvement of then Finance Minister P Chidambaram in Aircel-Maxis deal and the Commonwealth Games scams but nothing much was done.

The main opposition is also unhappy about the manner in which some of the ruling party members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee are "not allowing" it to work effectively.

Earlier, Parliament's Public Accounts Committee had also faced a lot of opposition from the ruling party members when the body was discussing the CAG report on 2G spectrum.

This has firmed up the opposition resolve to demand PM's resignation in the coal allocation scam, Prasad said.

New Delhi, Feb 25: Condemning the violence in Delhi, the Congress on Tuesday demanded that the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Chief Minister of Delhi come forward to ensure peace and maintain brotherhood while rising above partisan politics.

"This is Gandhi, Nehru, Patel's India, can any Indian accept this mindless violence? Congress appeals to the people of Delhi to maintain communal harmony and thwart all attempts of the forces dividing the country on the basis of religion," Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told reporters.

Unabated violence and incidents of stone-pelting and murder in the national capital have shattered the nation, he said, while referring to the riots in northeast Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that continued for the third day, and demanded stern action against the culprits.

"Our appeal to the prime minister, the home minister and the Delhi chief minister is, can you rise to the occasion, leave aside your political partisanship and views, and become really not leaders of your parties but leaders of the society so that harmony, peace, and non-violence prevail," he said.

The Congress party will stand with the Centre and the Delhi government in every way to maintain brotherhood and harmony in the society, he said.

"Do not fail this country because you belong to different political parties," Surjewala said, adding this was a sincere appeal "on behalf of people of Delhi and the country" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"There is no place for violence in Gandhi ji's India... Today there is a need to establish peace on the ground and maintain brotherhood," he said.

Surjewala said the party also prays for the speedy recovery of DCP Amit Sharma and the hundreds of other people who have been injured in the violence.

"We also condemn the firing at three journalists Arvind Gunasekar, Saurabh Shukla and Akash and pray for their good health," he said.

"We strongly condemn these brutal riots and demand that the culprits are identified and stern action is taken against the real culprits and miscreants. The Congress mourns the death of Head Constable Ratan Lal and others in the violence," Surjewala said.

New Delhi, May 25: Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra on Monday said lockdown extensions are not just economically disastrous but also create another medical crisis.

While acknowledging that choices are not easy for policymakers, he said a lockdown extension will not help.

"Lockdown extensions aren't just economically disastrous, as I had tweeted earlier, but also create another medical crisis," Mahindra said in a tweet.

He was referring to an article that highlighted "the dangerous psychological effects of lockdowns & the huge risk of neglecting non-COVID patients".

Mahindra, who had earlier proposed a comprehensive lifting after 49 days of lockdown, further said, "The choices aren't easy for policy makers but a lockdown extension won't help".

He said, "The numbers (coronavirus cases) will continue to rise & the focus must be on rapid expansion of field hospital beds with oxygen lines".

He further said, "The army has enormous expertise in this".

On March 22, before the government announced nationwide lockdown, Mahindra had proposed such a move expressing concerns over reports that India was likely to have already reached stage 3 of coronavirus transmission.

Jan 18: Days after the arrest of Deputy SP Davinder Singh along with two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, Shiv Sena on Saturday questioned the role of police in the Kashmir Valley.

"Cross border infiltration is ongoing in Kashmir. But the police machinery is being used to help the terrorists in Kashmir to safely cross the border (to Pakistan) and a President's medal awarded Deputy SP was arrested for doing so. In Kashmir (it seems), the government is using the police for some other purposes, what will the country's Home Ministry say if somebody has a doubt in connection with the Pulwama attacks," Sena mouthpiece, Saamna, read.

This was in reference to the incident in which Jammu and Kashmir police intercepted a vehicle on Sunday and arrested DySP Davinder Singh along with two top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, who were travelling together.

The Sena mouthpiece asserted that the impact and acceptance of the Centre removing Article 370 should be visible "through the people" during the upcoming Republic Day celebrations.

"Jammu and Kashmir is now a Union Territory. It is being ruled by the Centre through President's Rule. The government had removed Article 370 in a historic decision...The joy and excitement in the people over the removal of 370 should be visible in the Republic Day celebrations this time. The tricolour should be seen flying over all houses in Kashmir, it is the least that can be expected," it added.

The Sena mouthpiece further said that with the arrest of terrorists in the recent days, it hoped that "Republic Day will be celebrated safely in Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir".
