Won't pull out of UPA, say DMK sources, but will take part in bandh

Chennai, September 20: After Mamata Banerjee's dramatic exit, the Congress is left without its biggest ally in the coalition it leads at the centre, but another big partner, the DMK, has made a welcome reassurance.

Sources in the Southern party, which has 18 Lok Sabha MPs, say that the DMK has decided "not to embarrass the UPA" and that its course will not be affected by Ms Banerjee's pull-out last night, which has converted the UPA to a minority. The party, will however, participate in a bandh or strike called tomorrow to protest against the centre's new reforms.

Ms Banerjee said she could not remain part of the government after its decision last week to increase diesel prices, cap the amount of subsidized cooking gas available to households, and open up the retail market to foreign super-chains. (Who is Mamata Banerjee?)

Sources said this morning that a section of the DMK is in favour of following Ms Banerjee's lead and quitting the UPA, but was over-ruled. There are a few reasons why it would be politically expedient for the DMK to distance itself from the Congress now - a massive coal scam has over-shadowed the Congress, deepening the perception that it is a party infected with corruption. Like Ms Banerjee, any party that opts out of the UPA now can claim that it is doing so in the interest of the aam admi or common man, who will allegedly be hit hard by the government's new big-ticket reforms.

Tomorrow's strike against those new policies has won the support of parties ranging from the Left to the BJP, and crucially, Mulayam Singh Yadav, whose Samajwadi Party is now key for the government's survival. (Mulayam keeps UPA on tight leash, verdict on support tomorrow)

The DMK has in the recent past threatened twice to abandon the UPA. The first flashpoint was before the state elections in Tamil Nadu last year, which the DMK and Congress fought jointly. The DMK said it was not being given enough seats. Congress president Sonia Gandhi intervened to strike a compromise. However, the partnership was decimated in the polls. The DMK also flexed its muscle to pressure the Prime Minister to commit India's support to a UN resolution that asked Sri Lanka to investigate allegations of vast human rights violations against the island's minority Tamils in the final months of the civil war that ended in May 2009.

The DMK's allegiance to the government is also guided by the fact that two of its senior leaders, including the party president's daughter, are being tried for corruption in the telecom scam. The case is being investigated by the CBI, which, opposition parties, is often used by the ruling party to settle political scores or offer protection.

Vijay Mallya case documents mysteriously go missing in SC; next hearing Aug 20

New Delhi Aug 6: In a new twist in the Vijay Mallya case, a certain document connected with the case in the Supreme Court has gone missing from the apex court files.

A bench comprising Justices U.U. Lalit and Ashok Bhushan adjourned the hearing to August 20.

It was hearing the review plea filed by Mallya against a July 14, 2017 judgment wherein he was found guilty of contempt for not paying Rs 9,000 crore dues to banks despite repeated directions, although he had transferred $40 million to his children.

The bench was looking for a reply on an intervention application, which it seemed has gone missing from the case papers.Parties involved in the case sought more time to file fresh copies.

On June 19, the Supreme Court sought explanation from its registry regarding Mallya's appeal against the May 2017 conviction in the contempt case for not repaying Rs 9,000 crore dues to banks not listed for the last 3 years.

A bench comprising Justices Lalit and Bhushan had asked the Registry to furnish all the details including names of the officials who had dealt with the file concerning the Review Petition for last three years.

The bench said according to the record, placed before it, the review petition was not listed before the court for last three years. "Before we deal with the submissions raised in the Review Petition, we direct the Registry to explain why the Review Petition was not listed before the concerned Court for last three years," said the bench.In May 2017, the apex court held him guilty of contempt of court for transferring $40 million to his children, and ordered him to appear on July 10 to argue on the quantum of punishment.

The bench said let the explanation be furnished within two weeks. "The Review Petition shall, thereafter, be considered on merits," it added.In 2017, the apex court passed the order on a contempt petition against Mallya by a consortium of banks led by the SBI.

The banks claimed Mallya transferred $40 million from Daigeo to his children's accounts, and did not use this money to clear his debt. Banks cited this as violation of judicial orders.

Sena agrees with Shah, says Sharjeel's words were dangerous

Mumbai, Jan 30: The Shiv Sena on Thursday endorsed Union home minister Amit Shah's view that alleged inflammatory statements made by Sharjeel Imam, an anti- Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) activist, were dangerous.

No politics should be done on the issue, and such "pest" afflicting the country should be finished off, it said.

Imam was arrested on Tuesday in connection with his speeches at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi and in Aligarh during anti-CAA protests.

He has been booked for sedition, among other offences.

In an editorial published in its mouthpiece `Saamana', the Sena, a former ally of the BJP, said, "We agree with union home minister's comments that Sharjeel Imam's alleged words of separation are more dangerous than that of Kanhaiya Kumar."

Kumar, former student leader from Jawaharlal Nehru University, had been arrested over alleged separatist slogans shouted during a protest on varsity campus.

The Sena, which has formed alliance with the Congress and NCP to come to power in Maharashtra, is often seen walking a tightrope to preserve its credentials as a pro-Hindutva party.

"The union home ministry, while initiating action against Imam, should not indulge in politics and try to finish off this pest that is afflicting our country," the editorial said.

"One must find out why such language of breaking up this country into pieces is being used by the educated youth of this country more and more frequently. Who is spewing such venom into the mind of Sharjeel who did his graduation from IIT-B and now pursuing PhD from JNU?" the Sena asked.

"Even people involved in Elgar Parishad at Pune are facing sedition charges and these people have been known as intellectuals and are well-known personalities," said the party.

"A conspiracy to bring about a conflict between Hindus and Muslims and ensure continuance of anarchy and civil war as in Iraq and Afghanistan exists. The boost for such activities is coming from a 'political laboratory'," the editorial said.

Parties should not give tickets to candidates with criminal background: ECI to SC

New Delhi, Jan 24: The Election Commission of India on Friday told the Supreme Court that its 2018 direction asking poll candidates to declare their criminal antecedents in electronic and print media has not helped curb criminalisation of politics. The poll panel suggested that instead of asking candidates to declare criminal antecedents in the media, political parties should be asked not to give tickets to candidates with criminal background.

A bench of Justices R F Nariman and S Ravindra Bhat asked the ECI to come up with a framework within one week which can help curb criminalisation of politics in nation's interest.

The top court asked the petitioner BJP leader and advocate Ashiwini Upadhyay and the poll panel to sit together and come up with suggestions which would help him in curbing criminalisation of politics.

In September 2018, a five-judge Constitution bench had unanimously held that all candidates will have to declare their criminal antecedents to the Election Commission before contesting polls and had called for a wider publicity, through print and electronic media about antecedents of candidates.
