Mumbai, October 16: The Congress swept away the elections for Nanded Municipal Corporation of the state by winning 41 out of the total 81 seats. Congress, which shares power with NCP at the state level, went alone in elections to the 81-member Nanded Municipal Corporation, held yesterday. While NCP secured 10 seats, Shiv Sena got 14 and BJP won on 2 seats.

Reacting to the victory, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan who led the party in the polls, said the win was possible due to "teamwork" among Congress workers. "I will give all credit to party workers. The victory was a result of teamwork and stress on developmental issues and inspiration of our leader Sonia Gandhi," Mr Chavan said, terming the results a victory of "people's power"

NCP leader Pratap Chikhlikar, a staunch rival of Ashok Chavan in Nanded, alleged that Congress "used money power" to win the elections. Nanded is the home constituency of Ashok Chavan and the polls were considered crucial for his political future.

Mr Chavan has been looking at consolidating his position in Nanded and the larger Marathwada region to fill the leadership vacuum created in Congress following Vilasrao Deshkmukh's demise. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Industries Minister Narayan Rane and other senior Congress leaders had campaigned for the Congress. NCP leader Ajit Pawar had also held a rally during the campaign.

The Sena-BJP-RPI alliance, which had fielded candidates in 72 seats, won 16 out of them. Its campaign witnessed a road show by Sena executive president Udhhav Thackeray's son Aditya. MNS contested 42 seats but party chief Raj Thackeray did not campaign.

The Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen fielded 25 candidates and won 11. Three independents also won in the elections. The Shiv Sena had offered a pre-poll alliance to the MNS which spurned the offer. Earlier, the Shiv Sena and the MNS had reached post-election understandings in places like Ambernath, Thane and Kalyan-Dombivali.

Jun 5: Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his wife Mahzabeen have tested positive for COVID-19, a top government source told CNN News 18. They were admitted to the Army Hospital in Karachi.

Some of Dawood's personal staff and guards have also been quarantined, the report said on Friday.

Dawood was the mastermind of the 1993 Mumbai blasts and is one of the most-wanted gangsters by India. He has allegedly been living in Pakistan but the neighbouring country has always refusing to accept it.

Earlier in the day, a senior diplomat of the American embassy in Pakistan has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, a media report said.

In a statement, the embassy's spokesman said that while maintaining the privacy, the name of the citizen would not be disclosed.

The US State Department is responsible to protect its citizens, wherever they are, the spokesman added. In coordination with the Pakistani authorities, the consulate is working to enforce the coronavirus protocol in order to stem its spread. The spokesman added that isolation wards, contact tracing and quarantine facility are part of such protocols.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has 89,249 COVID-19 cases and the death toll is 1,838.

Kozhikode, Apr 24: A four-month-old baby girl, who had tested positive for COVID-19 and suffering from congenital heart disease, died in a hospital here in Kerala early Friday after suffering a cardiac arrest, officials said.

This is the third COVID-19 death and the first infant fatality in the state where two elderly people had succumbed to the disease earlier.

The baby was admitted to the Medical College Hospital here on April 21 with history of fever, cough, breathing difficulties and seizure after being treated at two other hospitals and the end came at 6 am, a medical bulletin said.

State Health Minister K K Shailaja said doctors had made maximum efforts to save the life of the child, whose family belonged to Payyanad near Manjeri in Malappuram district.

"Preliminary information which we have is that there has been some primary contact", she told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram.

The protocol for COVID-19 cases would be followed for the baby's last rites, the Minister added.

As of Thursday, the total active COVID-19 cases in the state stood at 129.

The bulletin said on arrival at the hospital on Tuesday the baby was in shock and had respiratory failure.

"She was resuscitated, mechanically ventilated and appropriate antibiotics for pneumonia and supportive measures to correct shock were started", it said adding the baby, however, continued to remain sick.

"Even though there was no history of any high or low risk contact or any epidemiological links as the child comes from SARI (Sever Acute Respiratory infection) criteria, she was admitted to the COVID-ICU and swab was taken and she tested positive", the bulletin said.

Contact tracing of those who had come in contact with the child was in progress.

Mallapuram District Medical Officer (Health) Dr Sakeena K said the child was having severe health issues from its birth itself and was admitted to a private hospital in Manjeri near here with breathing problem.

As her condition worsened, the baby was shifted to another hospital and later to the medical college hospital.

"The baby was having chest deformity and Atrial Septal Defect by birth which developed into severe health issues, the official added.
