Delhi court convicts passenger for hijack drama in 2009

New Delhi, October 25: A Delhi court has convicted a man named Jitender Mohalla for his lead role in a hijack drama on a flight from Goa to Delhi in 2009.

Mr Mohalla will be sentenced later today. The prosecution has asked for life imprisonment for him.

Mr Mohalla and two other passengers of an Indigo flight had claimed to be armed.

The crew sent a hijack alert which created a massive security drill at the Delhi airport. The pilot made an emergency landing and was isolated for several hours till Mr Mohalla's warning was declared a hoax.

Today's verdict comes as six passengers of an Air India flight are being questioned about allegedly forcing their way into the cockpit of their plane last week after it landed in Thiruvanathapuram instead of Kochi. The pilot, Captain Rupali Wagmhare, has said in a police complaint that the passengers threatened to kill her co-pilot and her if they tried to deplane. Captain Waghmare and the crew's shift had ended. The airline wanted to bring in a replacement crew to fly the passengers, who had boarded the plane in Abu Dhabi, to Kochi. The flight had been diverted because of bad weather.

The Kerala government has indicated its support for the passengers, accusing Air India of harassing them. The passengers deny that they threatened or assaulted the pilot, or that they entered the cockpit.

The cockpit voice recorder of the aircraft has been submitted to the regulator of civil aviation, the DGCA. The recordings will help piece together what transpired between the pilot and the passengers.

Jammu, Jan 23: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has brought the disgraced Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Davinder Singh to Jammu for investigations.

According to sources, Davinder Singh has been brought on a transit remand. A formal remand from the NIA court for interrogation will be taken on Thursday.

On Wednesday, fresh raids were carried out by the NIA at Singh's residences in Srinagar.

Singh was caught while transporting two militants, Naveed Babu and Rafi Ahmed, and a lawyer Irfan Ahmed in a vehicle to Jammu on January 11.

According to sources the two militants and the lawyer had plans to travel to Pakistan after reaching Jammu.

The case was transferred to the NIA after initial investigation by the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Singh has been dismissed from the service and the Jammu and Kashmir administration on Monday forfeited the commendation medal and certificate awarded to him.

New Delhi, May 6: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has extended the validity of electronic way (E-way) bills, whose expiry date fell between March 20 and April 15, till May 31.

"Notification No. 40/2020-Central Tax issued to extend the validity of e-way bills till May 31 for all those e-way bills which were generated on or before March 24, 2020 and had expiry between the period from March 20 to April 15, 2020," the CBIC tweeted on Tuesday.

E-way bill is produced by transporters and businessmen before a Goods and Services Tax (GST) inspector for moving goods worth over Rs 50,000 from one state to another.

Jan 1: Two army personnel were killed in a gunfight with heavily-armed Pakistani infiltrators along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Wednesday, officials said.

The infiltrators were intercepted in the Khari Thrayat forest when they were trying to sneak into India from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), they said.

"Two army soldiers martyred during cordon and search operation in Nowshera sector. The operation is still in progress and further details are awaited," Jammu-based Indian Army Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lt Col Devender Anand said in a statement.

The search operation was launched following information about the movement of suspected terrorists, the officials said.

The infiltrators opened fire on the troops and during a fierce gunfight, the two soldiers were killed, they said.

The officials said a massive operation is on in the area.
