Sohrabuddin accused under threat: Intelligence Bureau

Ahmedabad, November 9: Sabarmati Central Jail authorities have decided not to send police officers accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case to Mumbai for trial despite an order to produce them in court on November 9. The authorities have cited administrative reasons to keep the accused in Ahmedabad, but the real reason could be a threat to their lives by a banned Islamic outfit.

The Mumbai unit of the Central Intelligence Bureau has intimated the Mumbai police commissioner and the Gujarat DGP that the accused police officers might be attacked by the banned outfit members.

The input warned that some people in Surat are part of the conspiracy which aims to take revenge for the alleged fake encounters in Gujarat and also for arresting Simi activists for the 2008 serial blasts in Ahmedabad which killed more than 50 people.

Gujarat DGP Chittaranjan Singh has discussed the issue with Ahmedabad police commissioner S K Saikia and with the Maharashtra DGP. Singh told TOI: "We have received the input. We are taking the matter very seriously. Mumbai Police is tracking the developments while ATS is probing the matter."

Gujarat police decided to deploy Chetak commandos to escort the 11 accused cops, including D G Vanzara. Eight other accused, including former MoS home Amit Shah, are out on bail. Hearing in this fake encounter case of 2005 was transferred to a Mumbai court on the order of Supreme Court.

Visakhapatnam, Jun 13: A four-month-old baby who was on ventilator treatment for 18 days for COVID-19 was on Friday evening discharged from hospital after testing negative.

"A tribal woman of East Godavari named Laxmi was infected with COVID-19 in May, later the doctors confirmed that her four-month-old baby was also infected," said District Collector, Vinay Chand.

"The baby was shifted to Visakhapatnam VIMS hospital on May 25. She was treated for 18 days on a ventilator. Doctors again conducted baby's COVID-19 test recently, following which the reports came negative. After a health check-up, VIMS doctors discharged the baby on Friday evening," he added.

Meanwhile, 14 new COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Visakhapatnam district on Friday, taking the total number of cases to 252 including one fatality due to the virus.

Howrah, Jan 8: Following the 'Bharat Bandh' called by trade unions, protesters blocked railway tracks in Howrah and Kanchrapara in North 24 Parganas on Wednesday.

They raised anti-government slogans and criticised the Center for its policies. They were holding placards, posters and banners against the government.

Commuters faced difficulties as bus services were also affected. CPI (M) protesters also stopped the operation of state transport buses. In Odisha, the public agitation started around 6 am at Talcher, Bhubaneswar, Brahmapur, Bhadrak and Kendujhargarh.

Due to the protests, the following trains are detained enroute at different stations --Bhadrak-Brahmapur passenger at Bhadrak, Kendujhargarh-Bhubaneswar passenger at Kendujhargarh, Bhubaneswar-Balangir InterCity at Bhubaneswar, Howrah-Yesvantpur Express at Brahmapur, Ichhapur-Cuttack MEMU at

Brahmapur and Puri-Rourkela passenger at Bhubaneswar.

The ten central trade unions including Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), among others have given the call for strike with a 12-point charter of demand. Trade union Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) is not taking part in the strike.

New Delhi, Jun 10: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday brought back over 2,300 kg of polished diamonds and pearls worth Rs 1,350 crore of firms belonging to Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi from Hong Kong, officials said.

Out of the 108 consignments that landed at Mumbai, 32 belong to overseas entities "controlled" by Modi while the rest are of Mehul Choksi firms.

Both the businessmen are being probed by the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with an over USD 2 billion alleged bank fraud at a PNB branch in Mumbai.

The valuables include polished diamonds, pearls and silver jewellery, and is worth Rs 1,350 crore. 

The ED completed "all legal formalities" with authorities in Hong Kong to bring back these valuables, the agency said.

These will formally seized under the PMLA now, it said.
