Demand for crackers down 32 pc: Report

Kolkata, November 11: Amid increasing concerns over noise and air pollution, this year, the demand for crackers and fireworks have decreased by 32 per cent, according to a report.

"Celebrations this year may be cleaner, greener and noise-free as the year-on-year (y-o-y) searches for fireworks and firecrackers saw the biggest decline at 32 per cent," a a report by e-commerce platform for small businesses, Alibaba.com.

The report was collated from analytics data of the website from October 2011 through 2012.

Stating that Indian consumers are becoming more conscious environmentally, Alibaba.com India Country Manager Khalid Isar told PTI, "Having witnessed global searches and enquiries, we believe that this is a mirror of global trends. As environmental concerns grow, Indians too seem to be taking steps in the right direction."

On other reasons behind the decline in demand of firecrackers, he said, "There have always been concerns over safety. Further, with the global economic slowdown, it is a possibility that consumers may be reluctant to spend extravagantly on firecrackers".

Over the last couple of years, there has been a gradual shift for eco-friendly celebrations. Right from using recyclable, biodegradable materials to create Ganesh statues or using eco-friendly colours during Holi, Indians have been increasingly looking at environmentally friendly ways to celebrate.

According to some market reports there has been an increased influx of eco-friendly crackers this Diwali.

The Alibaba.com report added that during the festive season India has emerged as the second largest supplier market after China and fifth largest buyer market worldwide for Diwali related products.

Traditional buyer markets such as the US and the UK led the overall demand for these products at the B2B portal. The US is the top buyer market for Indian suppliers constituting 23 per cent of inquiries, it said.

Indian manufacturers also supply locally with the country being the second biggest buyer market with 17 per cent, followed by the UK at 8 per cent of inquiries. Other buyer markets of Indian Diwali related products include Australia, Canada and France.

According to the report, searches for ethnic clothing on Alibaba.com went up by 21 per cent in the last 12 months.

New Delhi, Jan 16: The Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government on Thursday rejected the mercy plea of Mukesh, one of the convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya case.

The mercy plea was then forwarded to Lieutenant Governor, who has now sent it to Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

The convicts were sentenced to death for raping a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in the national capital on the intervening night of December 16-17, 2012.

The victim, who was later given the name Nirbhaya, had succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Singapore where she had been airlifted for medical treatment.

Chennai, Mar 25: Tamil Nadu reported its first Covid-19 death at the Rajaji Government Hospital in Madurai this morning. The 54-year-old man from Madurai had no history of travel to any coronavirus-affected state or country.

However, he did have contact with two Thai nationals who had tested positive for Covid-19 and are undergoing treatment in isolation in Erode.

"Despite our best efforts, the #COVID-19 +ve Pt at MDU, #RajajiHospital, passed away few minutes back. He had medical history of prolonged illness with steroid-dependent COPD, uncontrolled Diabetes with Hypertension,” Tamil Nadu health minister C. Vijayabaskar tweeted.

The patient tested positive for the coronavirus on March 23. Yesterday the minister had disclosed that the patient had not responded well to treatment due to his medical condition. “He has a medical history of prolonged illness with steroid dependent COPD, uncontrolled diabetes with hypertension,” he said.

As of Wednesday morning, the total number of Covid-19 infected patients in Tamil Nadu was 18, including one patient who has recovered.

The latest patients include a 65-year-old man who returned from New Zealand and is currently in isolation at a private hospital, a 55-year-old woman from Saidapet who is currently in quarantine Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, and a 25-year-old who returned from London and is undergoing treatment at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Kozhikode, Aug 8: A tailwind or crosswind could be the reason for the Air India Express flight mishap at Kozhikode international airport in Kerala, according to some aviation experts. 

Team of DGCA and AIE already reached the spot. With the death of the captain and co-pilot in the mishap, the investigation would be focusing mainly on the voice recorders and other technical aspects.

It is learnt that the ill-fated aircraft, IX 1344 with 190 onboard including crew, was initially planning to land on runway-28 of the airport. But later the pilot opted runway-10 which is toward the other direction. Pilots would be taking the decisions on the basis of inputs from ATC.

The questions now doing the rounds are what made the pilot opt runway-10 and whether the tabletop runway lacked adequate safety parameters.

An aviation expert, who didn't want to be quoted, said that Capt Deepak Sathe, who was commandeering the aircraft, was a well-experienced pilot and was also familiar with the terrains. Hence the chances of any error from his part was very unlikely. Hence a fair in-depth probe was required to find the exact cause.

Though the Kozhikode airport has an Instrument Landing System, it was of category-I for which pilot's visibility is very crucial toward a touchdown. Since it is a tabletop airport and rough weather prevailing in the region, the chances of tailwind was also high, said sources.

There had been safety concerns about the airport over quite some time. In 2011 aviation safety consultant captain Mohan Ranganathan reportedly gave a report citing the safety issues, especially the buffer zones at the end of the runway.

However, an AAI officer said that rectification steps were already done by last year by widening the Runway End Safety Area (RESA) from 90 metre to 240 metre. However, the length of the runway had to be reduced to 2,700 metre from 2,850. The AAI was also constantly pressing for increasing the runway length to 3,150 metres. But that was getting delayed due to land acquisition issues pending with the state government.
