New Delhi, November 20: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) met President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday to protest against the alleged targeting of Muslim youths in terror cases and demanded that innocent youths harassed by the police and investigative agencies be compensated.

CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat led a delegation of terror victims to the President and submitted a memorandum, which details cases where youths slapped with terror charges were found to be innocent and acquitted after spending several years in prison.

"Today, we met honorable President of India to draw his attention towards the issue of targeting Muslim youths in the name of war on terror. He has assured appropriate action in this regard," Karat told reporters.

"While no quarter can be given to any individual or group responsible for terror attacks, the arrest of innocent Muslim youths has reached serious dimensions and requires immediate attention. Muslim youths are the most vulnerable targets today," he said.

He termed the fabrication of cases against Muslims youths as "dark spot on the secular democracy" of the country and said that the Government should adopt a policy wherein the victims of fabrication of terror charges by the police could get the compensation.

"It's a blot on the principles of secular democracy. At the same time, the arrest of innocent people means that the culprits go free," he added.

Presenting the cases of the four young men Md Aamir from Delhi, Syed Maqbool from Srinagar, Wasif Haider and Mumtaz Ahmed from Uttar Pradesh, the CPI(M) general secretary said, "The four youths were arrested arbitrarily when they were just 18 or 19 years of age, implicated in dozens of cases, incarcerated for over 10 years and each one of them was, as held by the courts, innocent. They are today without jobs, considered unemployable, with dark and uncertain futures."

"Young lives have been destroyed, families stricken, forced into social isolation, driven into debt to pay the huge expenditures in legal fees—the terrible conditions caused by State led injustice," Karat added.

The CPI(M) demanded compensation and rehabilitation for those implicated in cases, action against those who framed innocents and the scrapping of draconian provisions in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Demanding that the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act be repealed, Karat said, "Draconian provisions of the UAPA are being used to deny the normal process of justice, while there is no time bound procedure for the judicial process. There is a growing feeling of fear and apprehension on the one hand and anger on the other that innocents are being implicated."

According to Md Amir Khan, the President also agreed for the need of policy to compensate and rehabilitate victims of fabricated charges. He assured that he would speak to concerned departments and state governments in this regard, Amir told Daily Bhaskar.

The delegation included CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali, the party's Jammu and Kashmir legislator Mohd Yusuf Tarigami, two youths who had spent 14 years in jail before being acquitted and another who had served eight years in a Kanpur prison.

Jun 13: The Congress on Saturday accused the BJP-led government of burdening the common man with high taxes on petrol and diesel and earning Rs 2.5 lakh crore since March 5.

Congress leader Kapil Sibal said while international crude oil prices have fallen and are at the lowest level in 15 years, yet petrol and diesel prices are skyrocketing and common people continue to suffer under the Modi dispensation.

He said instead of passing the benefit of lower crude prices to consumers, petrol and diesel prices were hiked for the seventh straight day on June 13.

"The government has earned as much as Rs 44,000 crore in the last six days due to hike in petrol, diesel prices. Since March 5, the government has earned as much as Rs 2.5 lakh crore by way of increasing petrol, diesel prices.

"If the government had even the slightest feelings for the common man, instead of benefitting the companies and the government, the prime minister would have helped the common man with reduced fuel prices," Sibal said at an online press conference.

According to a report by Care Ratings, he said the hike effectively meant that the Central government is collecting around 270 per cent taxes on the base price of petrol and 256 per cent in case of diesel.

The former union minister said petrol was selling at Rs 71.41 in Delhi on May 1, 2014, when international crude oil prices were USD 106.85, while on June 12, 2020, the price of petrol was Rs 75.16 when the crude oil was at USD 38.

He said central excise and VAT cumulatively account for 69 per cent of tax on fuel in India which is higher than anywhere else in the world. He said the tax of fuel in the US was 19 per cent, Japan 47 per cent, the UK 62 per cent, France 63 per cent and Germany 65 per cent.

Feb 29: The "Dadi of Shaheenbagh" on Friday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not understand the pain of losing children, as speakers at an anti-CAA rally here called on protesters to maintain peace and not give in to any provocation.

Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, said that the battle is not for a day or two, but the protesters will have to be prepared to continue it for years to come.

Asma Khatoon, who has earned fame as the "Dadi of Shaheenbagh" in Delhi, asked how can a person take care of the whole country when he cannot maintain his own family.

"He would have realised how it feels to lose a child if he had his own children," she told a gathering at the Park Circus Maidan, which is being termed as the Shaheenbagh of Kolkata with women holding a sit-in for the last 53 days to protest the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, proposed nationwide NRC, and the NPR.

The death toll Delhi's communal violence has gone up to 42.

She said it is not biryani that has attracted women to the protest at Shaheen bagh while holding that such vilification campaigns will have no effect on the agitation.

State BJP president Dilip Ghosh has claimed that "uneducated men and women" are protesting at Delhi's Shaheen Bagh and Kolkata's Park Circus as they get money and biryani purchased with foreign funds.

"Home Minister Amit Shah has called 20 protesters to meet him, but I want to tell him that we are one lakh and I want him to mention the place where he wants us to go for the meeting," she said.

Tushar Gandhi said, "People should stay united and not give in to any provocation," he said.

Gandhi said that the people of West Bengal are lucky to have Mamata Banerjee as their chief minister.

"They will try to break her also and it is necessary that you continue to give her support," he said.

Gandhi claimed that no one can harm a country where its mothers and sisters come out to save it.

He claimed that the CAA is not about Hindus or Muslims, but will really affect the poor people, who will be made to run around to get their papers instead of earning for their basic and daily needs.

"It's a dichotomous government that we have at the Centre. On the one hand, they want us to provide documents to prove our citizenship, while on the other they refuse to accept the papers that one produces before it for the purpose," he said.

He claimed that the government is forcing its people to resort to lies and declare that they are political refugees from countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Gandhi claimed that time and again documents with the government like electoral rolls and land documents have been used to identify people of certain communities during riots.

"So it is dangerous to give too much information to the government," he said.

He called on the people to have faith in non-violence and asked them to maintain peace and harmony.

B R Ambedkar's great-grandson Rajratna Ambedkar claimed that it is the Adivasis who will also be affected by the CAA.

"I want to tell Modi and Shah that the country runs on the Constitution by Ambedkar and not M S Golwalkar (of RSS)," he said, adding that because of the rights conferred on people by the Constitution, those backward people who did not have the right to sit on a bullock cart are now flying jet planes.

He said that Modi and Shah committed an error by enacting the CAA as it has turned the people of the country into Indians only, instead of Hindus, Muslims, Christians or Sikhs.

"Every machinery of the country has been taken control of by the RSS. If one Modi or one Shah goes, they will bring in several more Modi or Shah," he said.
