New Delhi, November 26: The BJP's top leadership will meet today to discuss growing rebellion in the party, a day after it suspended Rajya Sabha member Ram Jethmalani for his vocal dissent, first on party president Nitin Gadkari's continuance and then on the issue of the appointment of the new CBI chief.

At the meeting of the party's Parliamentary Board at 4:30 pm today, BJP leaders are also expected to decide on action against other rebels like Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha. Both these leaders have, along with Mr Jethmalani, been at the forefront of the "Go Gadkari" campaign. Mr Sinha also supported Mr Jethmalani on the CBI chief issue.

Sources say after Mr Jethmalani, Shatrughan Sinha will be suspended, but Yashwant Sinha might be given a chance to withdraw his statement.

"Mr Ram Jethmalani's membership has been terminated. BJP's President Mr Nitin Gadkari has suspended Mr Ram Jethmalani with immediate effect," party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said on Sunday. The party is likely to formally expel the 86-year-old leading lawyer today; Mr Jethmalani, came from Mumbai to Delhi today, is defiant and has said no one "in the BJP has courage to take action" against him.

Mr Jethmalani, who had earlier frontlined a rebellion against Mr Gadkari, seeking his resignation over allegations of financial malpractice involving his Purti Group, has now written to the party chief slamming the BJP's opposition to the appointment of the new CBI director, articulated by two of the party's senior-most leaders, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley last week. He said in his letter that the Congress-led government had in fact averted a "national calamity" by making the appointment.

Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing their reservations over the appointment of Ranjit Sinha as the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They said that the select panel has recommended the CBI director be chosen by a collegium, that includes the PM as well as leaders of opposition among others.

Taking a grim view of Mr Jethmalani's remarks, Mr Hussain said, "Jethmalani's remarks are meant to help the Congress...party sees Jethmalani's letter on new CBI director as an act of gross indiscipline."

The embarrassingly public rebellion in the senior ranks of the BJP comes uncomfortably close to elections in Gujarat and has underscored the deeply-entrenched factionalism within. Mr Jethmalani is seen as close to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, who played a big role in pushing for a Rajya Sabha seat for him. Mr Jethmalani in his public musings, has said Mr Modi should be named the party's prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general elections.

The BJP's parent body, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), too is unhappy with the turn of events in the last fortnight, say sources. The tension came into the open with the issue of Nitin Gadkari's continuation as the party president for an unprecedented second term in the midst of charges of graft that he is facing. The party gave Mr Gadkari a clean chit recently over the allegations of financial impropriety, amply aided by the RSS, which had favoured him for a second term. But this did not impress the anti-Gadkari group, which believes that the continuation of Mr Gadkari as the party chief would tarnish the image of the BJP and severely dent its campaign the Congress-led UPA government over corruption.

New Delhi, Jan 30: Tension spiralled in Jamia Nagar on Thursday after a man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters, injuring a Jamia Millia Islamia student before walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting "Yeh lo aazadi" amid heavy police presence in the area.

Massive protests erupted in the area after the incident with hundreds of agitated people gathering near the university, breaking barricades and clashing with police personnel.

The man, who identified himself as "Rambhakt Gopal", was subsequently overpowered by police and detained. He was taken into custody and was being interrogated, police said.

The entire drama, which triggered panic in the area, was captured by television cameras that showed the man in light coloured pants and a dark jacket, walking away on an empty road barricaded by police, turning around and shouting at the protesters in Hindi, "Here, take this freedom."

The gunman went live on Facebook before the brandishing the gun. Police said they were verifying whether it is his real name.

Before the attack, the man also put out messages on Facebook stating "Shaheen Bhag Khel Khatam" (Run Shaheen, the game is over). Another message stated, "Please wrap me in saffron in my last journey with slogans of Jai Shri Ram". His Facebook profile was deleted after screenshots of his posts were circulated widely on social media platforms.

Several students recapped how their peaceful march on Gandhi's death anniversary became violent.

"We were moving towards the Holy Family Hospital where the police had raised barricades. Suddenly, a gun-wielding man came out and opened fire. One bullet hit my friend's hand," Aamna Asif, a student of economics at the university, told PTI.

She said her friend, Shadab Farooq, a mass communication student, was trying to calm the attacker but he shot at him injuring his left hand.

Farooq, who belongs to Kashmir, was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre.

Ragibh Naushad, an LLB student at the university, said, "The Jamia Coordination Committee organised a march to pay homage to Gandhi ji on his death anniversary. It started at 12 noon from Gate number 7, but police denied the permission and stopped the march near the Holy Family hospital.

"A man named Gopal, came there and started brandishing a weapon and later shot a round. He was also chanting pro-CAA slogans."

The incident led to panic in the area.

Khalid Hassan, a JMI alumnus, said initially many were not sure whether it was a gunshot or a tyre burst.

There was heavy police and media presence when the incident took place.

The students were heading from Jamia to Mahatma Gandhi's memorial Rajghat. The march was stopped at the Holy Family Hospital near the university.

Chinmoy Biswal, DCP (southeast), said the students wanted to take out a march from Jamia to Rajghat but were denied permission.

"They were being repeatedly told that the protest should be carried out peacefully. We had barricaded the road just before the Holy Family hospital. Meanwhile, a person was seen in the crowd who waved something which appeared to be a weapon."

"We have detained him and are interrogating him. One person has also been injured," Biswal said.

New Delhi, May 23: On the occasion of Jumat-ul-Vida, the last Friday of the ongoing holy month of Ramzan, a select group of people offered namaz at Delhi's Jama Masjid ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, while adhering to social distancing following relaxations in the fourth phase of the COVID-19 lockdown.

"A large number of people wanted to offer prayers today but we told them they should do so from their homes. Only the staff of the mosque and a few members of the family offered prayers here," Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid said.

The coronavirus pandemic has also marred the excitement of Eid for the vegetable and fruit vendors in neighbouring Daryaganj.

The fourth phase of nation-wide lockdown extended till May 31, began from Monday in which markets and shops were allowed to open. However, due to persisting fear of COVID-19, the sale of products is yet to pick pace.

Unlike each year, the market lacks the sheen this Eid with no bustle and people cautious about venturing out.

Salim, who has been selling cheese and curd in the market for the last 35 years, told ANI, "I have never seen such an Eid. There is an atmosphere of fear in the minds of people."

Another fruit seller Haseen Malik said that "During the month of Ramadan, most people relish fruits such as musk melon, sweet lemon and watermelon so there is some demand for it. But there is no excitement for Eid this year. The sale has been at an all-time low because of the lockdown."

In the wake of the festival and to ensure social distancing, Delhi Police has made elaborate security arrangements.

Bhopal, Jul 7: Anil Mishra, personal assistant to BJP Rajya Sabha MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, has tested positive.

He has been accompanying Scindia throughout his tours post-corona infection.

His contact trail is longer than that of Scindia. He has been in touch with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Mishra was present during Scindia's meetings with the MLAs and the swearing in ceremony of the MP ministry on July 2.

BJP sources say there is concern over the possible list of people who will be put in isolation to check the spread of the virus.
