Ahmedabad, December 6: In a major blow to Congress ahead of the Gujarat Assembly polls, senior party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Narhari Amin switched sides and joined the BJP with his supporters in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Mr Amin, who has sizeable support in the politically powerful Patel community, was welcomed into the party by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who described the move as a step towards strengthening democracy.

Mr Amin’s 21-year-old association with the Congress where he worked hard to build and maintain a strong base of party workers, ended after he was denied ticket by the party for 2012 Assembly polls.

He was seen sharing stage in all important events of Congress, with the State top leaders in the last one year, since the party started campaigning for the 2012 elections.

Mr Amin said that senior leaders like him were ‘insulted’ by the Congress as it had given tickets to unknown faces but those who had worked for the party for the last so many years were ignored.

“Everything was going fine in the Congress party till ticket distribution. At the time of ticket distribution differences between the state Congress leaders came to fore as all of them wanted tickets to be distributed to maximum number of their supporters,” he said.

“The high command also ignored senior leaders and played along with the choices of state leaders. State leaders after elections did not want to have a challenger and that is why they denied ticket to me and other strong contenders of party who could have easily won elections,” he added.

Welcoming Mr Amin to BJP, Mr Modi said, “He is a leader who had remained among people to serve them since his youth. Coming of Amin to the party (BJP) will strengthen democracy”.

“Congress has not only cheated people, but it has also cheated party workers by denying them tickets. It is important to defeat family oriented politics of Congress,” Mr Modi said.

Mr Amin alleged that Union Minister C P Joshi, who was in-charge of screening committee on ticket distribution has, by giving tickets to unknown faces, fixed the polls before voting.

“I am sure that BJP will win this election and Modi will secure a hat-trick in the State. I will work for the BJP now,” he said.

Mr Amin is a prize catch for BJP, given the challenge it is facing in Saurashtra region where former chief minister and Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) president Keshubhai Patel has come out all-guns-blazing against Narendra Modi government.

Mr Amin resigned from the Congress along with his six supporters. Another 175 of his supporters also had yesterday resigned from the primary membership of the party. All of them on Thursday joined BJP along with him.

An influential Patel community leader with a sizable fan following, he was not given nomination for the coming Assembly polls on the ground that he had lost two consecutive electoral battles.

The former president of Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) held a show of strength recently by organising a meeting of his supporters on the outskirts of the city and attacked the Congress high command and PCC leaders for denying tickets to “worthy” candidates.

New Delhi, May 29: In a powerful display of inter community solidarity, a team of Sikh volunteers visited Delhi's Jama Masjid and sanitized the 17th century monument.

As the national capital battled coronavirus, the historic Jama Masjid is closed for congregational prayers. However, the team of Sikh volunteers effectively sanitized the monument to ensure it is safe for the caretakers and visitors.

The volunteers affiliated with United Sikhs organization also met Naib Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Shaban Bukhari during the visit. The latter thanked the team for the humanitarian gesture and underlined the need for all sections of humanity to unite in the face of this crisis.

"The Sikh community has always displayed exemplary commitment to humanity and we are thankful to the United Sikhs' team for their initiative. This enormous crisis facing the human race can be fought off only if all communities, nations and people unite and fight it together. In recent weeks we have seen heart wrenching images of misery in the country as thousands of migrant workers return to their villages. At the same time we have also seen positive stories of different people uniting to help and feed them. We hope that together we will overcome this crisis," said Syed Shaban Bukhari, Naib Shahi Imam, Jama Masjid, Delhi.

Shaban Bukhari has also advised Muslims across the country to strictly avoid congregational prayers this Eid and pray at homes. He is young leader, who really believes in secularism. For him, humanity and kindness come first.

New Delhi, Jun 30: Amid calls for boycotting Chinese products after India-China face-off in eastern Ladakh, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government claiming that imports from China have increased under the NDA regime.

"Facts don't lie. BJP says: Make in India. BJP does: Buy from China," Gandhi tweeted along with a graphic of the percentage of imports from China during the UPA rule and the NDA government.

The graphic claims that imports from China were at 12-13 per cent when the Congress-led UPA government vacated office in 2014 but now stood at 17-18 per cent in 2020.

The Congress leader has been vehemently targeting the Centre on the India-China border situation after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in violent face-off with Chinese troops in Ladakh's Galwan valley earlier this month.

Indian intercepts have revealed that the Chinese side suffered 43 casualties, including dead and seriously injured, in the face-off.

New Delhi, Feb 3: Union minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had called himself an "anarchist" and there is not much of a "difference between an anarchist and a terrorist".

His remarks come a few days after the Election Commission issued a show cause notice to BJP MP Parvesh Verma for allegedly calling Kejriwal a "terrorist".

Addressing a press conference here, Javadekar raked up the issue of Kejriwal "staying a night at the Moga residence of Khalistan Commando Force chief Gurinder Singh during the Punjab Assembly polls".

"You knew it was a militant's house. Still, you stayed there. How much more evidence do you need?" he said.

"Kejriwal is now asking with a sad face, 'am I a terrorist?' You are a terrorist and there is a lot of evidence to prove that. You yourself had said you are an anarchist. There is not much of a difference between an anarchist and a terrorist," the senior BJP leader said.

Flanked by Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari and Union minister Anurag Thakur, Javadekar said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was supporting Shaheen Bagh, where slogans of "Assam ko azadi", "Jinnah wali azadi" were being raised. "Supporting such slogans is also terrorism".

He alleged that Kejriwal stood with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where "anti-India slogans were raised, and did not grant sanction to prosecute (those who raised the slogans)".

"On January 26, you threatened that you would stop their prosecution. How much more proof do you need? The people of Delhi now know that you are the chief of liars, you are an anarchist and sympathise with terrorists.

"You are supporting Shaheen Bagh, JNU, the slogans being raised there and all such anarchists...then you are definitely a terrorist. This is your identity, no matter how innocent face you make," he said.

On Thursday, the Election Commission had issued a show cause notice to Verma, the BJP MP from West Delhi, for allegedly calling Kejriwal a "terrorist".

He was earlier barred from campaigning for 96 hours (four days) for making controversial remarks at a poll meet recently.

An emotional Kejriwal had later said it was for the people of Delhi to decide whether they consider him their son, brother, or a terrorist.

"How have I become a terrorist? I've arranged for medicines...did so much for the needy. I've never thought of myself or my family... am ready to give my life for the nation," he had said at a press conference.
