New Delhi, December 14: The government has rejected former CBI director US Mishra's allegation that he faced political pressure when he was investigating the disproportionate assets case against former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BSP chief Mayawati.

"As far as CBI is concerned, it is an independent organisation that has been working within its domain and (there is) no political interference from our government," minister of state for PMO V Narayanasamy said.

Law minister Ashwani Kumar also ruled out any pressure on CBI director from the government.

"There is no such pressure," he told reporters outside Parliament House.

Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Rajiv Shukla alleged that Mishra was working as the CBI director under NDA rule, so BJP should respond to his allegations.

Shukla also said the former bureaucrat was "unnecessarily creating controversy and it is not good."

"It should be found out that this particular officer was under whose regime. If I remember correctly, he was under Vajpayee regime. He was a CBI director. I think BJP should respond to this allegation," he said.

BJP, however, reiterated its charges that CBI was being "misused" by the government and the fresh allegations only buttresses such views.

"We have been saying right from day one that CBI is being misused from time to time to harass political opponents to win over allies, and keep them under control. CBI has been converted into Congress Bureau of Investigation," senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu told reporters outside Parliament House.

"Our views have been further confirmed by the views of former CBI director," he said.

Responding to Congress' allegation that Mishra was a director during the NDA regime, Naidu said similar views was expressed by another former CBI director Joginder Singh.

Mishra had told a news channel on Thursday that "when we investigate cases against prominent political leaders, there are some influences to keep the progress report pending or present in a certain way".

Motera, Feb 23: A day before US President Donald Trump's visit to Ahmedabad, a makeshift VVIP entry gate erected outside the newly-built cricket stadium in Motera area here collapsed due to gusty winds on Sunday morning, an official said.

The entire incident was recorded by a bystander and aired on local television channels.

The makeshift entry gate was made of welded steel rods and covered in flex banners.

After some time, a portion of another makeshift gate structure at the stadium's main entrance also collapsed due to the windy weather, another official said.

No one was injured in both the incidents and work was underway to put the structures back in place, he said.

"The (VVIP) entry gate collapsed when fabrication work was going on. It was not a major incident. No one was injured in the incident," said Special Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Ajay Tomar said.

President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in a roadshow here on Monday and later address the 'Namaste Trump' event at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera area where over one lakh people are expected to be present.

The stadium has already received 'Building Use' permission from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, an official earlier said.

It is the world's largest stadium with a capacity to accommodate 1.10 lakh spectators.

The stadium has been rebuilt after demolishing the old one which had a seating capacity of 49,000 spectators.

Mumbai, Jan 7: People protesting against the JNU violence were evicted from Gateway of India here on Tuesday morning as roads were getting blocked and tourists and common people were facing problems, a police official said.

Police had appealed to the protesters to shift but they didn't listen, so they were "relocated" to Azad Maidan, the official said.

Hundreds of people, including students, women and senior citizens - who assembled at the iconic Gateway of India since Sunday midnight - demanded action against the culprits and called for Union Home Minister Amit Shah's resignation.

Violence broke out in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus.
