Kolkata, Jan 2: The Trinamool Congress leaders in West Bengal have stirred fresh controversy after some of them were seen dancing with women and throwing money at girls during the party's foundation day function on Tuesday.
The programme was organised in Bhangore, nearly Kolkata by some district level leaders. It was one of the many commemorative programmes organised by the Trinamool Congress all over the state to mark its 15th foundation day.
Coming at a time when New Year celebrations across the country have been muted in remembrance of 'India's Daughter' and the safety and security of women is high on the agenda, the incident has triggered a huge controversy.
A section of civil society and Opposition parties have condemned it, calling it a vulgar show.
"This is very sad and shocking. This is not the whole culture in Bengal. When so much is happening, when the girl died, you don't expect such things from any political party. When you see these things, you feel very sad. This is not the whole, total face of Bengal. I have never seen any such thing in my life," said noted theatre director and actor Usha Ganguly.
The recording of the programme, which was held right in front of the local police station, soon began airing on the local television channels after which police swung into action and stopped the show around 11:30 pm claiming it was being held without permission. Sources say that police received calls from a leader high in the Trinamool hierarchy.
