January 4, 2013
Bangalore, Jan 4: Contrary to his earlier assertions of a decisive move Friday to pull down the BJP government in Karnataka, the party's former leader B.S. Yeddyurappa deferred the plan to Jan 15.

"We will take a final decision Jan 15 as it is an auspicious day," Yeddyurappa told reporters after the first meeting of the working committee of his new party, the Karnataka Janata Party (KJP).

The Bharatiya Janata Party's first chief minister in Karnataka, he was forced out of office July 2011 over mining bribery charges, and formed the KJP after quitting BJP Nov 30. He took over as KJP president Dec 9.

Jan 15 is considered auspicious by many as the period of "Uttarayana" (Sun's journey to north) starts after "Makar Sankranti" (harvest festival) Jan 14. Yeddyurappa, however, indicated that he was determined to make allout efforts to prevent Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar from presenting the state budget in February, ahead of the assembly polls due in May.

"Myself and everyone in the working committee is opposed to budget presentation by Shettar as he has lost majority," he said. "I do not think he will be able to present the budget," Yeddyurappa said.

Yeddyurappa claimed that about 15 BJP assembly members, out of 118 in the 225-member assembly, attended Friday's KJP working committee meeting, which indicated that Shettar has no majority in the house.

He said all these BJP legislators were ready to quit the assembly and the BJP "right now but we asked them not to do so as we want to hold more consultations with all other BJP legislators supporting me on appropriate action and appropriate time for it".

Yeddyurappa said that 40 to 50 BJP assembly members, including several ministers, were supporting him and "we will talk to them and take a final decision (on toppling the Shettar ministry) Jan 15." The 15 BJP assembly members had also shared the dais with Yeddyurappa at a public meeting Dec 9 when he took over as the chief of the KJP, which he formed soon after quitting the BJP.

The BJP has not taken action against them for fear of Shettar ministry falling. state BJP chief K.S. Eshwarappa, however, says disciplinary action has been deferred as at least two of them have informed him that they would stay back with the BJP.

The state BJP coordination committee comprising, among others, Shettar, Eshwarappa, and party general secretary and Bangalore South Lok Sabha member H.N. Ananth Kumar is meeting here Saturday to take stock of the situation in the light of Friday's KJP decision.

Bhopal, May 28: A Bhopal-based high net worth individual hired a 180-seater A320 plane of a private carrier to ferry four family members to New Delhi, in a bid to avoid crowd at the airport and in flight amid the COVID-19 outbreak, officials said on Thursday.

The person, who is a liquor baron, chartered the aircraft to send to Delhi his daughter, her two children and their maid, who were stuck in Bhopal since the last two months due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown, sources said.

The plane arrived here from Delhi on Monday with crew only and flew back with just four passengers for whom it was specially hired, they said.

"The A320 180-seater plane arrived here on May 25 to carry four members of a family, probably due to the coronavirus scare. It was chartered by someone and there was no medical emergency, an airline official said, refusing to divulge any further details.

Bhopals Rajabhoj Airport Director Anil Vikram could not be contacted for comments.

According to aviation experts, the cost of hiring an Airbus-320 is about Rs 20 lakh.

Domestic commercial flight services resumed from Monday, after a nearly two-month break due to the coronavirus-enforced lockdown.

Patna, Jan 12: Prashant Kishor, national vice-president of the Janata Dal (United), a key ally of the BJP-led NDA, has thanked Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and former AICC chief Rahul Gandhi for their support in opposing CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and NRC (National Register of Citizens).

Perceived as one of the closest associates of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who is also the party’s national president, PK (as Prashant is fondly called) also assured the two top Congress leaders that the contentious legislation would not be implemented in Bihar where JD (U) is ruling the State with the support of the BJP.

“I join my voice with all to thank #Congress leadership for their formal and unequivocal rejection of #CAA_NRC. Both @rahulgandhi and @priyankagandhi deserve special thanks for their efforts on this count….also would like to reassure to all – CAA/NRC won’t be implemented in Bihar,” tweeted PK on Sunday.

The development assumes significance as a day back, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, chaired by Sonia Gandhi, had strongly opposed CAA/NRC/NPR as it was aimed at “sinister design of the present regime to divide Indian people into religious lines.”

The latest tweet by PK is also being seen as a rebuff to the BJP, which again recently reiterated that “the BJP should project its own chief ministerial candidate during the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections.”

The JD (U) had taken umbrage over such provocative statements by BJP leaders and asked the saffron camp to rein in its ‘loudmouths’ as BJP chief Amit Shah had already made it clear that the next Assembly polls in Bihar would be fought under the leadership of Nitish.

Of late, PK has been quite vocal about his opposition to the Centre’s policies, particularly the contentious issues of NRC and CAA. Besides, he even dubbed senior BJP leader Sushil Modi as the man who became Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister due to ‘circumstances’ as the BJP was decisively decimated during the 2015 Assembly elections.

Nitish never reprimanded PK for his jibe against Modi, thereby giving rise to speculations whether Bihar was again heading for a political churning ahead of Assembly polls slated for October this year.
