Hyderabad, Jan 8: Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, facing multiple cases for his alleged hate speech, was today arrested by Andhra Pradesh Police.

Owaisi, who was subjected to medical examination at the Gandhi Hospital here for his fitness status, is expected to be taken to Nirmal town in Adilabad district, where a case was registered against him for the alleged provocative speech.

He arrived from London yesterday and had sought four days to appear before the police on medical grounds.

He was also booked under relevant sections of IPC by Nizamabad and Osmania University police here for the alleged hate speeches.

As he failed to appear before Nirmal Police on health grounds yesterday, investigating officer of Nirmal (Rural) A Raghu visited Owaisi's house in Banjara Hills here last evening and found that he looked fit to face questioning, police sources said.

However, Owaisi complained of internal pain and hence was subjected to medical examination by government doctors at Gandhi Hospital today.

After getting the medical report, police decided on his arrest, they said.

It was still not clear whether he would be produced before a magistrate in Hyderabad or taken to Nirmal town.

Police was tight-lipped about the future course of action as they fear it may create law and order problem.

As the news of his arrest spread, hundreds of MIM workers and his supporters gathered in front of Gandhi Hospital. Police had a tough time in controlling the protesters and preventing them from gatecrashing into the hospital.

Police have already intensified security arrangements in the city, particularly in Old City -- a stronghold of MIM -- by deploying additional forces as a precautionary measure

New Delhi, Mar 25: The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in India rose to 562, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday.
This includes 512 active cases, while 40 infected people have already been cured or discharged.
The Union Health Ministry said that total deaths due to the disease now stand at 9, as the second death reported in Delhi is COVID-19 negative. One patient has also migrated due to the infection.
The Central government has taken several steps to contain the rapid spread of the virus including the screening 15,24,266 passengers at the airports.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Tuesday announced a 21-day lockdown in the entire country effective from midnight to deal with the spread of coronavirus, saying that "social distancing" is the only option to deal with the disease, which spreads rapidly.
In a televised address to the nation, Prime Minister Modi said that it is vital to break the chain of the disease and experts have said that at least 21 days are needed for it.
The Prime Minister, who had also addressed the nation last week, said the lockdown has drawn a "Lakshman Rekha" in every home and people should stay indoors for their own protection and for that of their families.

New Delhi, Jan 15: The mother of 23-year-old paramedic student, who was raped and brutally assaulted by six men in December 2012, on Tuesday said she knew that the curative petitions of the convicts will be rejected and is confident that they will be hanged on January 22.

Her remarks came after the Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay the execution of two of the four death row convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case while dismissing their curative petitions against their conviction and capital punishment.

"The curative please had to be rejected. This was the third time they had gone to the Supreme Court. Whatever pleas they file, we are ready to face them and we will fight it out. We feel that they will be hanged on January 22. We want that to happen," Nirbhaya's mother told PTI over phone.

The four convicts -- Vinay Sharma (26), Mukesh Kumar (32), Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and Pawan Gupta (25) -- are to be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail as a Delhi court issued their death warrants on January 7.

Vinay and Mukesh had filed curative petitions on January 9.

Shortly after the apex court refused to stay the execution of two of them, Mukesh moved a mercy petition before President Ram Nath Kovind.

Mukesh also approached the Delhi High Court for quashing the death warrant. The high court is expected to take up his petition on Wednesday.
