Lucknow, Jan 15: More than 10 million devotees from across the world took a holy dip in the sacred waters of “sangam” (the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers) at Allahabad amid tight security as the Mahakumbh mela began at Allahabad on Monday.

The first “shahi snan” (“royal baths” at the sangam by saints and sadhus of the 13 akharas) began at 5 am in the morning with the “naga sadhus” leading the way.mela

The near naked and ash smeared naga sadhus blew conch shells and danced as they moved towards the sangam bank.  The “Mahanirvani” and “Atal” akharas were the first to take a holy dip followed by the “Niranjani” and “Anand” akharas. Then, other akharas took turns to take a bath in the holy waters.

Devotees braved the chilly weather conditions to take a holy dip at the 18 “ghats” (banks) along the sangam. Crowds started gathering at the sangam area since Sunday evening.  Security personnel had a tough time controlling the surging devotees who thronged the sangam banks at dawn.

At one point, the situation threatened to go out of control when the crowds stayed on the banks, blocking the way for the other devotees. Senior police officials reached the spot and made the crowd to leave the bank to pave way for the incoming devotees.

“By evening, an estimated 10 million devotees had taken bath on the occasion of Makar Sankranti,” officials said, adding that the number devotees from abroad was also formidable.

A battery of mediapersons, both national and international, captured the bathing by the naga sadhus. The administration had made special arrangements for the mediapersons to cover the congregation.

The Mahakumbh, held every 12 years, is a 55-day event during which as many as six shahi snans will take place. The next  royal bath will take place on “Mauni Amavasya” (Februrary 10) followed by “Basant Panchami” (Februrary 15).

The other important days for the Maha Kumbh are “Pauash Purnima” (January 27), “Maghi Purinma” (February 25) and “Maha Shivratri” (March 10).

Tight security arrangements have been made keeping in view the threat perception from terrorists.

According to sources in the state Home Department, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) has alerted the police on possible terrorist threat to the mela. Teams from the National Disaster Management Authority, bomb disposal and anti-sabotage squads have also been deployed.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arun Kumar said 30 police stations and 40 outposts have been set up at the place and they are being manned by 50 inspectors, 550 sub-inspectors, 450 head constables and 5,800 constables.

Jammu, Apr 7: Old habits will just no longer do, a Jammu and Kashmir administration employee found to his dismay on Tuesday when he was sent to a quarantine centre for blowing his nose and spitting on the road.

The man, who works as an accountant in the civil secretariat here, had gone to meet a relative in Paloura on the outskirts of the city when he was nabbed, officials said.

The neighbours panicked when they saw him blowing his nose and immediately called the police, which rushed to the spot with a medical team and a magistrate, they said.

He was immediately taken to a quarantine facility set up at the IIT hostel in the Janipur area and his samples taken for a coronavirus test.

Given the high levels of anxiety over the spread of COVID-19, news of his being taken by police started circulating widely. There were also some WhatsApp messages that he was trying to deliberately spread the infection and was arrested by police.

However, police officials said they had not arrested him and merely put him in a quarantine centre. It was not clear how long he would be in the centre.

The employee told police officials he had an itch in his nose and nothing more.

"Be responsible citizens and stop spreading rumours or fake news," an official said, requesting people to be more responsible.

New Delhi, Apr 19: The government on Sunday prohibited the sale of non-essential items through e-commerce platforms during the ongoing lockdown, four days after allowing such companies to sale mobile phones, refrigerators and ready-made garments.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla issued an order excluding the non-essential items from sale by the e-commerce companies from the consolidated revised guidelines, which listed the exemption given to the services and people from the purview of the lockdown.

The order said the following clause "E-commerce companies. Vehicles used by e-commerce operators will be allowed to ply with necessary permissions" is excluded from the guidelines.

The previous order had said such items were allowed for sale through e-commerce platforms from April 20.

However, the reason for reversing the order is not known immediately.

New Delhi, Mar 25: The Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) on Wednesday appealed to the people not to cancel their e-tickets on their own in case of trains being cancelled by the national transporter due to nation-wide lockdown to help curb the spread of novel coronavirus pandemic.

Clearing the doubts of the railway passengers, IRCTC spokesperson Siddharth Singh said, "Doubts have been raised regarding cancellation of e-tickets subsequent to the halting of railway passenger trains.

"It may be submitted that for trains cancelled by the railways in its complete run, refund on e-tickets is full and automatic. In this case, no cancellation exercise is required to be done on the part of the user," he said.

The IRCTC official said that if user cancels his e-ticket in situations of train cancellations, there are chances he may get "less refund". "Hence passengers are advised not to cancel e-tickets on their own for those trains which have been cancelled by the railways," he said.

He also said that the refund amount will be credited to the user account used for booking e-tickets automatically and no charges will be deducted by the railways in case of train cancellation.

His remarks came as the national transporter announced the suspension of the passenger, mail and express services from March 23 till March 31. However, the railways extended the suspension of services till April 14 in the wake of the three week lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from March 25 during his second special address to the nation on Tuesday night.

The railways has cancelled over 13,600 passengers trains across the country in a bid to combat the spread of novel coronavirus. Only freight trains are running to ensure the supply of essential services. About 9,000 freight trains are transporting essential items every day across the country.

On Wednesday, India recorded 562 cases of COVID-19 with 10 deaths.
