Majority feel rapes will go down if six Delhi gangrape accused get death

New Delhi, Jan 22: The horrific and brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old paramedical student inside a chartered bus in Delhi on December 16, 2012 by six men shook the national capital, forcing its citizens to come out on the streets in large numbers to demand justice and seek improvement in law and order. The CNN-IBN State Of The Nation Survey conducted after the barbaric incident reveals that India is seeking stronger laws and stricter punishment for heinous crimes like rape.

With crimes against women and incidents of rapes rising across the country, the Delhi gangrape was seen as a perfect example of how criminals were having an easy run with the police failing to protect the citizens of the country. As protests continued in Delhi the Delhi gangrape braveheart died on December 29 after battling for life for over 12 days.

As the political class found, the protesters were not only demanding justice for the Delhi braveheart but also better security for the women, especially in the national capital.

Their outrage is reflected in the State Of The Nation Survey in which an overwhelming majority have demanded exemplary punishment for those found guilty of rape. Several respondents also came up with options like stoning and flogging rapists in public while 100 per cent of those surveyed were in favour of increasing punishment for the rapists.

Almost 80 per cent of the respondents said yes when asked if the recent Delhi gangrape case will change the way in which crimes against women are dealt/handled in the future whereas 68 per cent answered in the affirmative to the question if crimes against women like rape will stop if the six accused in the recent Delhi gangrape case are given death penalty. Poor law and order and low rate of conviction in rape cases is because of police inefficiency and corruption coupled with the poor implementation of law and the slow process of criminal justice system.

Kerala BJP slams CM Vijayan for not attending PM's video conference on COVID-19

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 27: BJP's Kerala state President K Surendran on Monday said it is 'highly irresponsible' of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to not attend PM's video conference with all chief ministers on prevailing COVID-19 situation earlier today.

"The Kerala Chief Minister not attending the important conference regarding a pandemic in the country is not good for the state," Surendran said.

The BJP state President believes Vijayan has sent a wrong message by not attending the conference.

"It is the irresponsible behavior of the Chief Minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi says that team India is fighting this pandemic together. By not attending the meeting, the Kerala CM has sent a wrong message, " he added.

Surendran said that the meeting was of high priority as PM was meeting the state CM's regarding the important decision of lockdown in the country.

"From the last meeting, many things have changed. Other chief ministers who did not get a chance to speak, participated in the meeting. But Kerala CM chose not to attend the meeting and BJP condemns it, " he said.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan had not participated in the PM's video conference held earlier today and instead Kerala Chief Secretary Tom Jose represented the state in the meet.

According to sources, Kerala has given its suggestions in writing.

This was the fourth such interaction of the Prime Minister with the Chief Ministers, the earlier ones had been held on March 20, April 2, and April 11.

PM Modi in the meeting said the lockdown has yielded positive results as the country has managed to save thousands of lives in the past one and a half months.

When Union Minister incite people to shoot, such incidents are possible: Priyanka Gandhi on Jamia firing

New Delhi, Jan 31: Slamming the BJP over the Jamia firing incident, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said such incidents were possible with the ruling party's leaders inciting people to shoot, and asked Prime minister Narendra Modi to answer whether he stands with violence or non-violence.

Her attack on the government comes a day after tensions in the Jamia area spiralled on Thursday after a man fired a pistol at a group of anti-CAA protesters, injuring a student, before walking away while waving the firearm above his head and shouting "Yeh lo aazadi" amid heavy police presence in the area.

"When the BJP government ministers and party leaders incite people to shoot, give provocative speeches, then all this becomes possible. The Prime Minister should answer what kind of a Delhi he wants to build?" Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

Does the PM stand with violence or non-violence, she asked.

"Does he stand with development or with anarchy?" the Congress general secretary said.

Probe ordered into surgery on corona patient in UP hospital

Lucknow, May 19: The administration of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) has ordered a probe into the cardiac procedure conducted on a corona positive patient in the hospital.

The patient underwent a cardiac procedure without being tested for corona before the surgery. He later tested positive for COVID-19, leading to panic among the staff and other patients.

The medical staff that came in contact with the patient were quarantined on Monday while the area was sanitized.

As per orders from the State Medical Education Department, even in emergency cases, patients are to be screened for Covid-19 before procedures are done.

According to the SGPGI administration, the incident took place late on Sunday night.

In an official statement, director, Prof R.K. Dhiman said, "The 63-year-old patient was a case of complete cardiac blockage and needed an urgent temporary pacemaker. The patient was admitted to the holding area of the institute and later shifted to the MICU for permanent pace making."

He said that when the patient's corona status was found to be positive on the Hospital Information System, she was shifted to the Rajdhani COVID Hospital.

The Director said, "Though the involved areas have been sanitized and healthcare workers were quarantined as per protocol, a probe has been ordered to investigate the lapses."
