Govt raises gold import duty by 50 pc; prices shoot up

January 22, 2013

gold_priceNew Delhi, Jan 22: The government on Monday slapped higher import taxes on gold, raising it from 4 to 6 per cent, a move expected to moderate its import and also curb India's passion for the yellow metal which has put tremendous strain on state finances.

The government also proposed to make changes in the gold deposit schemes and make it more attractive for people to deposit their gold with banks.

Shortly after news of the duty hike, gold prices shot up by Rs 315 to Rs 31,250 per 10 grams and markets sources say it may go up to Rs 700 per 10 grams in the short term.

An estimated 20,000 tonnes of gold is lying idle with Indian households. “The government will link Gold Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) with gold deposit scheme, which will enable mutual funds to unlock their physical gold and invest in gold-linked schemes offered by banks.

The proposed changes will help moderate import of gold and help bridge the current account deficit,” Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram said here. He, however, added that the duties will be reviewed if there is moderation in the quantity of gold imported into the country.

India’s gold import is estimated at $38 billion in 10 months up to December 2012 from $56.5 billion in fiscal 2011-12. A 50 per cent rise in import duty is seen important to curb the current account deficit, which has widened to $38.7 billion or 4.6 per cent of the GDP in the first half of the current financial year.

The move to link Gold ETF with deposit schemes will help increase physical availability of gold in the market, as a part of the gold lying in stock will be brought into circulation to meet the demand of gems and jewellery trade, the secretary said.

Gold futures traded 1 per cent higher immediately after the announcement. The government also made some changes in the quantity and tenure for the gold deposit scheme in order to make it attractive to individuals.

The minimum quantity of gold to be deposited into gold deposit schemes will now be reduced and the minimum tenure would be brought down to six months from the present three years.

Market regulator Sebi and the Reserve Bank are expected to come out with notifications on gold ETF and gold deposit schemes in two to three weeks.

Gold ETF is provided by mutual funds, in which the units are backed by physical gold held by the MFs. Gold deposit schemes are offered by banks, in which gold deposited by client is lent by the banks to the gems and jewellery trade.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram had recently expressed concern over rising gold imports and the consequent overflow of foreign exchange which was putting pressure on the current account deficit which widened 5.4 per cent in the second quarter of current fiscal ending September 2012.

But, analysts said gold still looked more attractive to Indian consumers with nearly 13 per cent rise in domestic prices, while the interest rates offered by the bank were around 9 per cent and inflation hovered above 7 per cent.

Lucknow, Jul 2: Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti Thursday appeared in person before a special court here conducting trial in the 1992 Babri mosque demolition case.

The special CBI court is currently recording the statements of 32 accused under CrPC section 313 (court's power to examine the accused), a stage in the trial that follows the examination of prosecution witnesses.

The 61-year-old saffron clad BJP leader is the 19th accused to depose before the court in the over 27-year-old case. Thirteen other alleged accused, including former deputy prime minister LK Advani and senior BJP leaders MM Joshi and Kalyan Singh are yet to be examined at this stage. Their lawyers have indicated to the CBI court that they prefer to appear through video conferencing.

The mosque in Ayodhya was demolished in December 1992 by 'kar sevaks' who claimed that an ancient Ram temple had stood on the same site. The CBI court is conducting day-to-day hearings to complete the trial by August 31, as directed by the Supreme Court.

Jaipur, Jul 14: In a show of strength, Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot-led Rajasthan Congress camp on Monday released a video showing at least 16 MLAs sitting together.

This comes hours after the Congress held a legislature party meeting. Party leaders said 106 of 122 MLAs attended, a claim contested by the Pilot camp.

The 10-second video was shared late at night on Pilot's official WhatsApp group.

In the video, at least 16 MLAs are seen sitting together in a close circle. Pilot is not seen in the video.

Six other people can be seen in the video but they could not be identified.

Some of the MLAs seen in the video are Indraraj Gurjar, Mukesh Bhakar, Harish Meena.

Tourism Minister Vishvendra Singh tweeted the video with the caption "Family".

Ladnun MLA Mukesh Bhakar tweeted, "...Loyalty in Congress means Ashok Gehlot's slavery. That is not acceptable to us."

Pilot has been upset since he was denied the Rajasthan chief minister's post after the December 2018 assembly elections.

On Sunday, he claimed to have the backing of 30 Congress MLAs and "some independents".

Those close to him disputed Gehlot's claim that his government had a majority, and said this is proven in the assembly and not at the CM's house.

Sources close to him have also ruled out the possibility of Pilot joining the BJP.

In the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly, the Congress has 107 MLAs and the BJP 72. In the past, the ruling party has claimed the support of 13 independents, two MLAs each from the CPM and the Bharatiya Tribal Party, and one from the Rashtriya Lok Dal.

New Delhi, Jun 18: Republican Party of India (RPI-A) leader Ramdas Athawale on Thursday urged Indians to boycott Chinese food and asked for a ban on all restaurants which serve the cuisine.

"Restaurants selling Chinese food should be banned. Restaurants should be closed by the order of the state government. I appeal to people who consume Chinese food to boycott it," Athawale told ANI here.

The Union Minister also said that both the products which come from China and its literature should also be banned in the country.

"The Chinese literature should also be banned, its products too should be banned and its companies too should not be given business here. We should develop such companies in the country which can manufacture the same products here," he added.

Athawale also warned China to reconsider its actions and stop its nefarious activities on the border by saying, "You took Buddha from us but we don't want yuddha (war) with you. A war will prove to be costly for both countries, economically and loss of lives will also occur. If we (Indians) are not crossing the border then why are you doing so?"

Athawale's statements came after at least 20 Indian Army personnel, including a Colonel rank officer, lost their lives in the violent face-off in the Galwan valley area of Ladakh on June 15.

The clash happened as a result of an attempt by the Chinese troops to "unilaterally change" the status quo during de-escalation in eastern Ladakh and the situation could have been avoided if the agreement at the higher level been scrupulously followed by the Chinese side, India said on June 16.
