India woos Iran with its affordable generic drugs

generic_drugs New Delhi, Jan 31: India is hard selling its cost effective generic drugs to Iran and competing against the expensive medicines from Europe, according to Pharmexcil, the apex body responsible for promotion of the country's pharma exports.

"Iran imports more active pharmaceutical ingredients than formulations from India. Instead of paying high cost to Europe, they should source drugs from India. We have been trying to impress this upon them," Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) Director General P V Appaji told PTI.

Pharmexcil had recently taken a 25-member delegation to Iran in order to promote pharma trade with the Western Asia nation, he added.

Besides, the organisation is trying to expand trade ties with African and Latin American countries.

"We are concentrating on Latin America and Africa as areas where we can increase our pharma exports. During the recently concluded Vibrant Gujarat Summit, we had invited some 70 delegates from Africa," Appaji said.

Pharmexcil is also participating in the Arab Health 2013, the second largest healthcare event in the world, being held in Dubai to promote Indian pharma companies in the region.

"Indian companies are aware of the market potential in the Middle East and they will showcase a unique variety of high-tech and innovative products, aiming to expand their business in the Middle East region," Appaji said.

When asked about the growth of the Indian drug exports, Appaji said: "US continues to be in the lead role with over 27 per cent exports," adding that the country exported USD 13.2 billion worth of total drugs for the year ended March 31, 2012.

On growth expectations for the current fiscal, Appaji said: "Exports are comfortable at the moment. We expect 20-22 per cent growth in dollar terms."

"Several challenges are there..API exports to Europe have come with a new requirement..every consignment needs to be accompanied with a written confirmation from a competent authority..we are working to pass this requirement comfortably," Appaji said.

Indian pharmaceutical exports to Europe currently stand at around USD 1 billion.

Pharmexcil, set up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in 2004, has been tasked with the promotion of the Indian pharmaceuticals industry around the world.

Nirbhaya case: SC dismisses curative plea of fourth death row convict Pawan Gupta

New Delhi, Mar 2: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a curative petition filed by convict Pawan Kumar Gupta who was sentenced to death in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case.

A five-judge bench headed by Justice N V Ramana said that no case is made out for re-examining the conviction and the punishment of the convict.

Other members of the bench were justices Arun Mishra, R F Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan.

Govt tells news agency PTI to pay Rs 84.48-cr for ‘breaches’ in its office premise

New Delhi, Jul 13: The Land & Development Office, which comes under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, has sent a notice to news agency PTI, demanding it to cough up more than Rs 84 crore as penalty. The notice dated July 7 says that the penalty has been imposed due to "breaches" at its office in Delhi.

The notice that sought Rs 84,48,23,281 argues that "the less will be pleased to regularise the breaches in the premises temporarily up to 14.07.2020 and withdraw the right of re-entry of the premises subject to the following conditions being fulfilled by you within 30 days from the date of issue of this letter."

The notice also stipulates that the news agency needs to give an undertaking on non-judicial stamp paper stating that it will pay the difference of "misuse/damage charges" if the land rates are revised with effect from 01.04.2016 by the government and will also remove the "breaches" by 14.07.2020 or get them regularised by paying charges.

The notice also warns that further action to execute the deed has to be subject to complete payment and putting the premise to use according to the masterplan.

The Land & Development Office so warned that an additional 10 per cent interest may need to be coughed out by PTI if it fails to furnish the concerned amount within the stipulated time period.

Additionally, if the news agency fails to comply with the terms within the said period, the concession will be withdrawn. In other words, they will have to pay the penalty up to the actual date of payment then and will also be subject to actions.

This stern notice for alleged violations by PTI comes closely on the heels of national broadcaster Prasar Bharati locking horns with PTI over its reportage that it called "anti national".

Prasar Bharti had recently sent a letter threatening to end its "relationship" with PTI after it carried an interview of Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong, where he blamed India for the India-China violent standoff that saw 20 Indian bravehearts getting martyred.

Political design behind Jamia, Shaheen Bagh protests to ruin nation's harmony: PM Modi

Feb 4: Amid the agitations against Citizenship Amendment Act, National register of Citizens and National Population Registration across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that there is a "political design" behind all these protests including in Delhi's Jamia and Shaheen Bagh to ruin the harmony of the nation.

"Be it Seelampur, Jamia or Shaheen Bagh, protests held over the past several days regarding the Citizenship Amendment Bill. Is this just a coincidence? No. This is an experiment," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his first election rally for Delhi polls at Karkardooma.

"There is a political design behind all these protests including Jamia and Shaheen Bagh. These protests are a conspiracy to divide India. These protests are going to ruin the harmony of the nation," he asserted.

Lambasting the opposition parties including Congress and Aam Aadmi Party for supporting the ongoing protests, he said: "But AAP and Congress are provoking people. Constitution and tricolor are being kept in front and attention is being diverted from the real conspiracy."

"These people were doubting the ability of our forces during surgical strikes. Do citizens of Delhi want such people in power? These people are saving those who want to break India into pieces," he added.

People have been protesting at Jamia and Shaheen Bagh against CAA, NRC and NPR. Members of the Opposition have deemed CAA "discriminatory and anti-Constitution" while the Centre has maintained that the new law has no effect on Indian citizens.

Recently, two firing incidents took place near Jamia Millia Islamia University.On Sunday night, the firing incident was reported near gate number five at the university following which people including some students of the varsity gathered outside the Jamia Nagar police station. They returned from the Jamia Nagar police station after their complaint was registered.

Earlier, a student sustained injuries after a young man fired at the protestors near Jamia.

If this situation continues, our nation will be one of the poorest countries in the world. This govt is trying to sell all Govt hold units like Railway, Insurance, etc to private companies only to help the industrialists and to get commission from them. LIC was running in profit till 4 to 5 years back, but now its running in loss. Huge amount of money from LIC is taken by Govt to hide the downfall of economy. Only God can save our country from the hands of present looters + decoits.
