Mumbai/New Delhi, Feb 7: After the Union Home Ministry issued an advisory, the Maharashtra Police have finally registered an FIR against Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Praveen Togadia (in pic) on Thursday for allegedly delivering a hate speech in a rally in Bhokara town, Nanded district on January 22.

“The home ministry’s advise is clear. Once they have confirmed forensic evidence, appropriate action as per law must be taken against Togadia,” a senior official said.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Javed Ahmed told Deccan Herald that a case for creating communal disharmony has been registered against the VHP leader in Nanded.

Officials in the state police headquarters disclosed that the FIR will probe the VHP leader’s speech under Sections 153 and 505 of the IPC. Both the sections deal with divisive statements “made to create enmity, hatred on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, language etc.”

The state government came under severe pressure from the Centre to register a case against the VHP leader known for using “inflammatory language and invectives against minorities”.

Togadia’s speech in the communally sensitive town had sparked off a furore and Maharashtra Minister for Minorities Naseem Khan on Thursday said that there was “enough evidence to book the VHP leader.”

He said: “Togadia was trying to polarise society with an eye on the elections. If Owaisi can be booked then Togadia should also be booked. We cannot have double standards.”

The state government, along with top police officers were in a quandary as the local police and the special branch present at the rally stated in their record that they did not find “the speech inflammatory.”

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, closeted with top bureaucrats and police officials till late evening, refused to confirm or deny registering a case. Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil, who is camping in Delhi, said that the home department and police officials were studying the speech before taking any action.

However, pressure was mounted on the state government when Congress leader Digvijay Singh stated that religious leaders cannot be allowed to play with communal harmony in the country.

“I assure you, if he (Togadia) has violated any law, law will take its course,” said Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi, while Left leader Sitaram Yechury too felt that action should be initiated against Togadia.

New Delhi, Feb 12: Delhi Chief Minister-designate Arvind Kejriwal was on Wednesday elected as the leader of AAP legislative party, a day after he led the party to an emphatic victory in the Delhi Assembly elections.

Kejriwal was elected as the AAP legislative party leader during a meeting called by him with the newly-elected party MLAs. The meeting was held at the AAP chief's residence.

Atishi, AAP's winning candidate from Kalkaji constituency said after the meeting, "It is definitely a validation of the work that has been done by AAP in the last five years, be it education, health care, water or electricity."

Kejriwal is slated to take oath as the Delhi Chief Minister for the third time at Ramlila Maidan on February 16.

AAP galloped to a landslide victory by winning 62 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections in the face of a high-voltage campaign by the BJP, which fielded a battery of Union Ministers and Chief Ministers in its electioneering, spearheaded by Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP marginally improved its tally, managing just eight seats from its 2015's tally of three seats. The Congress, which drew a blank in the previous elections, failed to open its account yet again.

Jaipur, Jul 14: In a show of strength, Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot-led Rajasthan Congress camp on Monday released a video showing at least 16 MLAs sitting together.

This comes hours after the Congress held a legislature party meeting. Party leaders said 106 of 122 MLAs attended, a claim contested by the Pilot camp.

The 10-second video was shared late at night on Pilot's official WhatsApp group.

In the video, at least 16 MLAs are seen sitting together in a close circle. Pilot is not seen in the video.

Six other people can be seen in the video but they could not be identified.

Some of the MLAs seen in the video are Indraraj Gurjar, Mukesh Bhakar, Harish Meena.

Tourism Minister Vishvendra Singh tweeted the video with the caption "Family".

Ladnun MLA Mukesh Bhakar tweeted, "...Loyalty in Congress means Ashok Gehlot's slavery. That is not acceptable to us."

Pilot has been upset since he was denied the Rajasthan chief minister's post after the December 2018 assembly elections.

On Sunday, he claimed to have the backing of 30 Congress MLAs and "some independents".

Those close to him disputed Gehlot's claim that his government had a majority, and said this is proven in the assembly and not at the CM's house.

Sources close to him have also ruled out the possibility of Pilot joining the BJP.

In the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly, the Congress has 107 MLAs and the BJP 72. In the past, the ruling party has claimed the support of 13 independents, two MLAs each from the CPM and the Bharatiya Tribal Party, and one from the Rashtriya Lok Dal.
