Jamiat sets two-month deadline for Muslim quota

New Delhi, Mar 6: Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, one of the country's leading Islamic organizations, has set a two-month deadline for the UPA government to enact a law on reservation for Muslims in government jobs in proportion to their population.

It also asked the government on Tuesday to pass the anti-communal violence law besides release of innocent Muslim youth arrested on false charges of involvement in terrorist activities. It said if its demands were not met, it would launch nationwide protests.

Taking on UPA chairperson and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Jamiat general secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani said, "You can't remain competent and eligible to the legacy of the great family if injustices in the states run by your party are not stopped, and communal violence law is not enacted during the UPA regime."

He claimed Muslims were not "bonded labour" of any particular party and urged the government to at least introduce the communal violence bill in Congress-ruled states within a year.

The Jamiat leader said all political parties had fooled the minorities and other weaker sections including Muslims, OBCs and tribals. Madani also urged the BJP to clarify its stand on Muslims. "If it clarifies its stand, the country's destiny will definitely change," he said referring to the recent claim of BJP leader L K Advani that the attitude of Muslims towards the party was changing.

He also took on Mulayam Singh Yadav and said if the Samajwadi Party chief failed to fulfill his commitment of providing 18% reservation to Muslims, releasing Muslim youth arrested on false charges and allowing reconstruction and repair of mosques in Uttar Pradesh, his dream of becoming prime minister would remain unfulfilled.

Around 12,000 protesters courted arrest near Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in the capital, and Jamiat leaders submitted a memorandum of demands to the prime minister's office.

"Our working committee will meet next month. We will give the government a couple of months to act. If it fails, there will be nation-wide protest including massive jail bharo movement," Madani said.

Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey booked for criticizing Savarkar

Aligarh, Jan 22: An FIR has been lodged against social activist and Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey for his remarks on Savarkar.

Speaking to media, CO Civil Lines, Anil Samania said, "A complaint is lodged by Rajiv Kumar Ashish, national vice-president of All India Hindu Mahasabha against Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey in connection with indecent remarks on Veer Savarkar. An FIR is lodged based on this complaint under sections 153 and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)."

"An investigation is underway. Pandey came to the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) where he made a speech in which he made the alleged indecent remarks," he added.

Don't mistake Hindu tolerance for weakness: Fadnavis to Pathan

Nagpur, Feb 21: Former Maharashtra chief minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Friday condemned AIMIM leader Waris Pathan's reported remarks that 15 crore Muslims are more than a match for the country's 100 crore Hindus, and asked the latter not to mistake the majority community's tolerance for weakness.

Pathan has been widely condemned for reportedly stating that "15 crore hain lekin 100 crore pe bhari hain".

He purportedly made these comments while addressing an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act rally in Kalaburagi in north Karnataka on February 16. The AIMIM leader has claimed he was quoted out of context.

Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Fadnavis demanded an apology from Pathan and asked the Uddhav Thackeray government to take action.

"We condemn the statement made by Waris Pathan and demand an apology. In case he does not apologise, the state government must take action against him," he said.

Fadnavis said Pathan should understand that minorities were safe and enjoyed full freedom in India because 100 crore Hindus live in the country.

He said no one would dare utter such a statement in a Muslim-majority nation, adding that the "Hindu community is tolerant but its tolerance should not be mistaken for weakness".

"Pathan should apologise to the nation and the Hindu community," he said.

Envoys from 16 nations in Kashmir to assess ground situation, EU opts out, wants more access

Kashmir, Jan 9: US Ambassador to India Kenneth I Juster along with envoys from 15 other countries arrived in Srinagar on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, the first visit by diplomats since the abrogation of the erstwhile state's special status in August last year.

The Delhi-based envoys arrived in Srinagar by a special chartered flight at Srinagar's technical airport where top officials from the newly carved out union territory received them, officials said.

Later in the day, they would be going to Jammu, the winter capital of the newly created Union Territory, for an overnight stay. They will meet Lt Governor G C Murmu as well as civil society members, they said.

Besides the US, the delegation will include diplomats from Bangladesh, Vietnam, Norway, Maldives, South Korea, Morocco, and Nigeria, among others.

Brazil's envoy Andre Aranha Correa do Lago was also scheduled to visit Jammu and Kashmir. However, he backed out because of his preoccupation here, the officials said on Wednesday.

Envoys from the European Union (EU) countries are understood to have conveyed that they will visit the union territory on a different date and are also believed to have stressed on meeting the three former chief ministers -- Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti -- who are under detention.

Officials said envoys of several countries had requested the government for a visit to Kashmir to get a first-hand account of the situation in the Valley following the August 5 decision to abrogate provisions of Article 370 and bifurcate it into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

This is the second visit of a foreign delegation to Jammu and Kashmir since August 5. Earlier, Delhi-based think tank International Institute for Non-Aligned Studies, a Delhi-based think tank took 23 EU MPs on a two-day visit to assess the situation in the union territory.

The government had distanced itself from the visit with Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy informing Parliament that the European parliamentarians were on a "private visit".
