New Delhi, Mar 21: With the DMK walking out, the UPA government has found itself in deep water after its key partner, Samajwadi Party (SP)?leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, pressed for the resignation of his bete noire Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma.

The Samajwadi Party’s support is crucial for the survival of the government after the DMK?withdrew support to the ruling coalition.

The Samajwadi Party forced repeated adjournments in both Houses over Verma’s remarks against Yadav, who found support from several quarters, including Opposition leader Sushma Swaraj of the BJP.

Swaraj not only demanded Verma’s resignation but also wanted the matter referred to the privileges committee. “Verma had tarnished the image of the SP chief who is a respected leader of the House,” Swaraj remarked. Verma, a backward class leader from Uttar Pradesh, had claimed that Yadav had links with terrorists and took “commission” for the SP’s outside support to the UPA government.

On a day when Yadav refused to accept the “regret” expressed by Verma, Congress president Sonia Gandhi was seen walking the extra mile to placate the SP supremo. She was seen pleading with Yadav in the Lok Sabha. Although what transpired between them was not made official, SP members said Gandhi requested Yadav not to press for Verma’s resignation.

Following DMK’s exit from the UPA coalition, the government is dependent on the support of the SP and the Bahujan Samaj Party, besides Rashtriya Janata Dal and Janata Dal(S) for survival.Yadav seemed to have changed tack and toughened his stance on the issue hours after the DMK called it quits. However, party sources said he will take a final decision on Verma on Thursday.

“It is his way of making the Congress weak despite supporting it,” said an MP from Uttar Pradesh.

Wednesday was a day of odd developments. Yadav’s brother, Ramgopal Yadav, praised the BJP, the NDA government and the prime ministership of A B Vajpayee. He also criticised the Congress over the party’s way of treating its allies.

Besides, Lalu Prasad Yadav of the RJD supported Yadav, even as Sharad Yadav of the opposition JD(U) held one-on-one talks with Ahmed Patel, Gandhi’s political secretary.

The SP chief, known to be a tough bargainer, raised a few eyebrows as he met NCP chief and Union minister Sharad Pawar. They are said to have discussed the present political situation as well as the possibility of forming a coalition of regional parties in future.

While the government appeared to be susceptible to pulls and pressures, Union ministers P Chidamabram and Kamal Nath led the government’s spirited defence. They claimed that there was no threat to the government’s stability.

Mayawati’s BSP, which on Tuesday said it will continue to support the government, remained silent. “We are watching everything,” a BSP member told Deccan Herald.

Meanwhile, UPA renegade Mamata Banerjee supported the UPA government over the proposed parliamentary resolution on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

New Delhi, Apr 21: Tablighi Jamaat leader Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, who has been booked by the Delhi Police for holding a religious congregation here during the lockdown, on Monday urged the followers of the organisation to pray at home in the month of Ramzan.

"I request all, both in India and abroad, to strictly follow the guidelines and instructions of the local or national governments and till the time restrictions are in place and please observe prayers at home. And even in this, we should not invite people from outside," he said in a statement.

Ramzan begins later this week.

While addressing an online briefing on Sunday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal cited the Tablighi Jamaat congregation last month, a major hotspot, and the large inflow of travellers from other countries to Delhi as the reasons for the spread of the virus, and said the city was "fighting a difficult battle".

The Delhi Police crime branch, had on March 31, lodged an FIR against seven people, including the cleric, on a complaint by the Station House Officer of Nizamuddin police station for holding the congregation in alleged violation of the orders against large gatherings to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Later, the Indian Penal Code Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was added to the FIR.

The cleric is wanted by the Delhi Police and he responded twice to them. He is currently under home quarantine.

In an audio message released earlier this month, Kandhalvi had said he was exercising self-quarantine after several hundreds who visited the congregation at Nizamudddin Markaz tested positive for coronavirus.

Kolkata, Jun 29: Sweet-loving Bengalis have something to cheer about in COVID-19 time as the West Bengal government decided to come out with a "sandesh" which will contain honey from Sundarbans and increase immunity, an official said on Sunday.

Cotton cheese made from cow milk will be mixed with pure honey from the Sunderbans to prepare the "Arogya Sandesh" which will also have extracts of tulsi leaves, an official of the Animal Resources Development Department said.

No artificial flavours would be added to the sweetmeat which will be available in the department's outlets in the city and neighbouring districts, he said.

The sandesh will boost the immune system as a whole but it is not a COVID-19 antidote, the official said.

Sunderbans Affairs Minister Manturam Pakhira said the honey for making Arogya Sandesh will be collected from beehives in places such as Pirkhali, Jharkhali and other parts of the Sunderbans and it will be stored in a scientific manner.

The sandesh is expected to hit the shelves in another two months and the pricing will be within the reach of the common man, the animal resources development department official said.

Earlier this month, a reputed sweetmeat chain of Kolkata came out with an "Immunity Sandesh" claiming that it contains various herbs and spices such as haldi (turmeric), tulsi, saffron, and cardamom and Himalayan honey, which will boost immunity to fight novel coronavirus.
