Quit, if you cannot abide by constitution: Katju to Tamil Nadu CM

Katju Hyderabad, April 5: The Press Council of India (PCI) Friday asked the Tamil Nadu chief minister to suspend 30 policemen involved in the illegal arrest of an editor of a daily nearly three years ago, or resign.

Taking serious note of the government's inability to comply with earlier orders in the case, PCI chairman Markanday Katju directed the state administration to immediately suspend, chargesheet and arrest the policemen. The PCI chief said a chief minister should resign, if he or she is unable to rule in accordance with the constitution.

During an opening hearing by the inquiry committee here, Justice Katju said it was deeply regrettable that Tamil Nadu authorities showed total disrespect to orders passed twice last year.

The PCI was dealing with a complaint by S. Manimaran, editor, "Thinaboomi", a Tamil daily published from Madurai.

The editor alleged that policemen barged into his house July 21, 2010 and took him away, along with his son, without a warrant. They were jailed and treated like criminals by the police, he said.

Maniraman alleged that he was targeted for his writing against illegal granite mining in Madurai district.

When the lawyer representing the Tamil Nadu government pointed out that it was the DMK which was in power at the time the incident occurred, Katju remarked that his order was not against any particular party.

10-month-old among two test positive for COVID-19 in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, April 2: A 59-year-old woman and her 10-month-old granddaughter have tested positive for novel coronavirus in Chandigarh on Thursday.

According to the Chandigarh Health Department, they are family contacts of the NRI couple that tested positive for COVID-19 earlier.
With this, the total cases in the Union Territory rose to 18.

The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country climbed to 1,965 on Thursday, after as many as 328 new cases were reported, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. So far, at least 50 people have lost their lives due to the virus.

COVID-19: India records highest single-day spike of 9,304 cases, 260 deaths

New Delhi, Jun 4: India on Thursday witnessed a record single-day spike of 9,304 coronavirus cases taking the country's tally to 2,16,919, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The ministry informed that 260 more deaths due to coronavirus were reported in the last 24 hours.

The total number of cases in the country now stands at 2,16,919 including 1,06,737 active cases, 1,04,107 cured/discharged/migrated and 6,075 deaths.

Maharashtra has so far reported 74,860 cases, more than any other state in the country.

In Tamil Nadu, 25,872 cases have been detected so far while Delhi has reported 23,645 coronavirus cases.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 1,39,485 samples were tested in the last 24 hours whereas 42,42,718 samples have been tested till date.

Women's college issues dress code, prohibits burqa

Patna, Jan 25: JD Women's College in Patna has issued a direction to the students to follow the prescribed dress code on the campus while stating that wearing a 'burqa' in college is prohibited.

"All students have to come to college in the prescribed dress code, every day except on Saturday. Students are prohibited from wearing 'burqa' in college", reads a notice signed by the Principal and Proctor of the college.

The college administration has also imposed a fine of Rs. 250 for violation of the norm.

I think this college management will allow girl students to wear tight jeans + t-shair and miniskirts but is not allowing a girl to cover her body. Are we in ancient days where humans had no dress to cover themselves or in the time of Nair kings in kerala who restricted ladies of low caste from covering their chest.
