Sharad Yadav all set to be JD(U) chief for a third time

Sharad_YadavNew Delhi, April 14: With no other contender in race, Sharad Yadav will is all set to be President of JD(U) for a third consecutive time tomorrow.Yadav was the only one to have filed the nomination for the post and today was the last day for withdrawal of nomination. The decision will be announced at the party's national council meet tomorrow.

Yadav's name was proposed from around 20 state units of the party including Bihar where JD-U is running a government in alliance with BJP.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was the first proposer in one of the nomination sets filed by Yadav.

Yadav became JD(U) president in 2006 replacing George Fernandes who had been elected the party president in 2003.

Though the term of president in JD(U) is only two years, Yadav continued till 2009 and was again elected to the post. The election for the party chief was due since 2011 but the party sought extension from the Election Commission.

A four-time MP from Madhepura Lok Sabha seat in Bihar, Yadav, who is in politics for the last four decades, had first become MP from Jabalpur constituency in Madhya Pradesh in 1977 during the anti-Congress movement in the country.

Hailing from Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, he is an electronics engineering graduate from Jabalpur.

Yadav was selected for the 'Outstanding Parliamentarian Award' for 2012.

Yadav, who is also NDA convener, is getting the third stint as JD(U) Chief at a time when there is intense speculation whether his party will remain with BJP-led NDA amid increased focus on Narendra Modi as BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate for 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

JD(U)s aversion to Modi is a known fact, which has been given expression many times by a number of leaders and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in particular. New Delhi, Mar 11: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “destabilising” the elected Congress government in Madhya Pradesh.

Gandhi also said the PM may have “missed” noticing the 35 per cent crash in global oil prices and asked him to pass on the benefit to Indians by slashing petrol prices.

“Hey @PMOIndia, while you were busy destabilising an elected Congress Govt, you may have missed noticing the 35 per cent crash in global oil prices.

“Could you please pass on the benefit to Indians by slashing #petrol prices to under 60 per litre? Will help boost the stalled economy,” the former Congress chief said on twitter.

Congress' prominent youth leader Jyotiraditya Scindia quit the party on Tuesday and appeared set to join the BJP amid a rebellion in Madhya Pradesh by his supporters, pushing the 15-month-old Kamal Nath government to the brink of collapse.

On Tuesday morning, as much of India was celebrating Holi, Scindia met senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, following which he called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence.

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 9: The Kerala government has set up five COVID-19 helpdesks for non-resident Keralites in countries which have a substantial number of Pravasi Malayalis.

Addressing a press conference here Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday said: "In order to address the concerns and issues faced by the non-resident Keralites, we have set up five dedicated COVID helpdesks in countries where we have a substantial number of Pravasi Malayalis."

The helpdesks started by Norka Roots will be managed locally by persons and voluntary organisations active among non-resident Keralites. The Kerala government has requested the Indian Ambassadors in various places to cooperate with these helpdesks.

The Chief Minister also informed that online medical services would be made available to the non-resident Keralites through the Norka Roots website.

"Pravasi Malayalis can consult prominent doctors in Kerala by audio or video calls through the website, with prior registration. The services of various speciality doctors will be available from 2 pm to 6 pm IST," he said.

Currently, registration for the Norka Pravasi ID card is only available for the Malayali expatriates residing or working abroad for a period of not less than six months. "Now students from Kerala studying abroad can also avail this facility. The overseas student registration service would enable them to get Insurance benefits and discounts on flight tickets. This registration will be mandatory for all students presently studying abroad as well as for those going abroad, from now on," Vijayan said.

The Pravasi ID card is a multi-purpose photo identity card that entitles every non-resident Keralite to avail all services and facilities offered by Norka Root. The card comes with an add-on Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) coverage. Two prominent airlines are offering a discount on the base fare for air tickets booked by Norka Id card holders.

New Delhi, Aug 7: India's COVID-19 cases tally crossed 20 lakh mark with the highest single-day spike of 62,538 cases on Friday, said Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The COVID-19 tally rises to 20,27,075 including 6,07,384 active cases, 13,78,106 cured/discharged/migrated and 41,585 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

Maharashtra with 1,46,268 active cases and 3,05,521 cured and discharged patients continues to be the worst affected. The state has also reported 16,476 deaths due to the infection.

Tamil Nadu has 54,184 active cases while 2,14,815 patients have been discharged after treatment in the state. 4,461 deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in the state.

Andhra Pradesh with 80,426 active cases is the third on the list. There are 1,04,354 cured and discharged patients and 1,681 deaths reported from the state.

Delhi now has 10,072 active cases and 1,26,116 cured and discharged patients. 4,044 people have lost their lives due to the disease in the Union Territory so far.
