Will thrash SP goons black and blue after assuming power, Mayawati says

April 14, 2013

Lucknow, Apr 14: The war of words in Uttar Pradesh (UP) politics saw yet another low on Sunday when Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, in a bid to consolidate her dalit vote bank, said that "her government will thrash the Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders black and blue after being voted back to power".

"When the BSP was in power, it had distributed land to dalits but it has been forcibly taken over by the SP goons after their party assumed office in the state. I want to assure you all that when the BSP will be voted back to power, we will thrash (SP goons) them black and blue... so much so that they will never think of repeating the act," said Mayawati, while addressing a large gathering of BSP workers in Lucknow on the occasion of 122th birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar.maya

She was confident about BSP winning the next elections because the "people are fed up with the collapse of law and order as well as governance in the state under SP government".

Accusing the SP government of acting with political vendetta, Mayawati said that the large number of hoardings installed by the BSP workers near dalit memorial — Bhimrao Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sthal — to pay tribute to Babasaheb Ambedkar, were removed by the government officers under the pressure of SP leaders.

"The SP government knew that it was Babasaheb's anniversary and lakhs of people will come to pay tribute to him. On this occasion, hoardings are installed across the country for which no permission is required. But in Lucknow, we took permission from the local body to install hoardings near the Sthal. But on Saturday night all hoardings within three kilometres of the Sthal were pulled down on the directives of the SP leaders," she claimed.

Attacking the SP government on the issue of deteriorating law and order in the state, Mayawati said that goons are calling shots under the SP rule. "Women are afraid of stepping out of their houses after sunset. Crime has increased enormously and there is no rule of law in the state," she said. "A 10-year-old girl was raped in west UP and when her parents went to lodge a complaint, the victim was put in the lock up by the police, instead of catching the culprits," she said.

Targeting SP's Muslim vote bank, she said, "In last one year, more than 100 communal riots have taken place in UP. Minorities are not feeling safe".

Mayawati said that dalit will have to get the master-key of politics so that they can get their constitutional rights.

"The status of dalits and sarva samaj could be improved only when they get the political master-key and their government comes at the centre and in the state," she said.

Alleging anomalies in the recently held Bhatparrani assembly by-elections, Mayawati said that the BSP will also contest the coming by poll for Bhadoi assembly seat and will examine the role of the officials. She also attacked UPA government blaming it for price rise and corruption in the country.

Amaravati, Mar 16: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said that paracetamol is the only medication for coronavirus.

He said that COVID-19 is lethal for those have comorbid conditions including blood pressure, asthma and kidney diseases.

"There is no need to get panic about Coronavirus. Its impact is majorly on senior citizens aged above 60 years. It is dangerous to those suffering from diabetes, blood pressure, asthma and kidney diseases. For others, it is not so much dangerous. And paracetamol is the only medication for coronavirus," Reddy said on Sunday while addressing a press conference on the postponing of the local body elections as coronavirus cases continue to rise.

"In case anybody coming from foreign countries is found suffering from cough, cold and fever, bleaching powder should be sprayed on their belongings and things they use. The government is creating awareness on such precautions," he added.

Reddy slammed the State Election Commissioner's decision of postponing the local body elections for six weeks and alleged that the SEC was acting at the behest of TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu.

The opposition has targeted Reddy on his statement, saying the chief minister is behaving "ignorantly" and "irresponsibly" on the issue of coronavirus.

"While Telangana CM had changed his stand and closed shops and theatres in his state, Jagan Reddy is speaking as if there is no need for any panic. This CM is behaving ignorantly and irresponsibly," said Naidu.

Andhra Pradesh has reported one case of coronavirus. The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across India has risen to 110.

New Delhi, Apr 24: The Central government said on Wednesday that the number of COVID-19 cases in the country is now doubling in every 10 days, adding that had the lockdown not been imposed on time, the number of cases would have sky-rocketed to over one lakh by now.

"Had we not taken the decision to impose nationwide lockdown, we would have had around one lakh COVID-19 cases by now. This is a reasonable estimate," said Niti Aayog member V.K. Paul.

Paul, who is also the Chairman of the government's Empowered Committee- 1, said the "cases are now doubling in every 10 days."

"As on March 21, our doubling time of cases was three days. Results started showing on March 23, due to travel restrictions imposed earlier. On April 6, further slowing of doubling rate became visible, thanks to the nationwide lockdown," he added.

He further added that the decision to impose the lockdown was timely and asserted that the curve has begun to flatten.

"Nationwide lockdown helped take us away from the exponential growth curve and thereby contain the growth of COVID-19 cases," he said.

Paul further added that surveillance has been a great strength in containing the spread of the virus.

"Besides containing the spread, augmenting testing and improving preparedness, the nation has brought about a massive behavioural change through a ‘Jan Andolan' (mass movement)," he said.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases in the country has crossed the 23,000-mark, with 718 deaths. Globally, the number of cases has crossed 2.7 million while the death toll has mounted to 1.9 lakh.

New Delhi, Mar 10: Minutes after Jyotiraditya Scindia submitted his resignation to the party membership to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, the Congress expelled him for anti-party activities after reports emerged that he had met PM Modi and Amit Shah.

Disgruntled Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday amid indications that he might join hands with the BJP to topple the Madhya Pradesh government.

Sources said Scindia first met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and then the two leaders met Modi at the prime minister's residence.

Legislators loyal to Scindia, who has been upset with the Congress leadership with his marginalisation in the affairs of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, are likely to quit the party to reduce the Kamal Nath-led government to a minority.

It is likely to be followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party staking claim to form the government in the state.

The Congress President has approved the expulsion of Jyotiraditya Scindia from the Indian National Congress with immediate effect for "anti-party activities," said KC Venugopal, General Secretary Congress.

No person is, nor will be greater than the party: Congress youth wing chief

Indian Youth Congress (IYC) chief Srinivas B V on Tuesday slammed Jyotiraditya Scindia, who has announced his resignation from the primary membership of the Congress, and thanked party chief Sonia Gandhi for expelling the former Guna MP "who was promoting anti-party activities and factionalism".

"The history of 1857 and 1967 was once again repeated," Srinivas B V said, referring to the 1857 Revolt against East India Company and the role of the Scindia royals back then as well as Vijayaraje Scindia's switch from the Congress to the Jana Sangh in 1967.

"I would like to thank Congress president Sonia Gandhiji for taking the strong steps to expel the leader who was promoting anti-party activities and factionalism," the IYC chief said.

"No person is, nor will be greater than the party," he added.
