Caught on camera: Arrested IPS?officer roams free

April 30, 2013
Ahmedabad, Apr 30: An accused in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and senior Gujarat IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian courted controversy yet again when on Tuesday a local news channel caught him on tape moving around without a police escort and spending a night at home, while he was supposed to be in judicial custody.

cameraPandian, a 1996 batch suspended IPS officer, was arrested in 2007 for his alleged involvement in the fake encounter case.

About six months ago he was shifted to Mumbai jail after the Supreme Court directed that the trial of the case be held outside Gujarat. On Sunday evening, Pandian had arrived in Ahmedabad for a hearing in another fake encounter case of Tulsiram Prajapati.

Crew of local news channel caught him taking a private car from the railway station and moving to the government circuit house where he was supposed to be officially put up for the night. However, from the circuit house, Pandian was caught on tape taking the same private car and moving towards his home in the Prahladnagar area.

The officer ostensibly spent the night at his home. On Monday morning when he left his home and took the same private car, he was intercepted by the television crew. The officer panicked and fled from the spot. He was seen later at the local court with the police escort. Though there have been allegations in the past that police officers arrested in fake encounter cases were being given “VIP” treatment, this is for the first time such an act has been caught on tape.

The incident comes close on the heels of the CBI accusing the Gujarat government of shielding yet another fake encounter case accused. The bureau is expected to move the CBI?special court on Tuesday seeking an arrest warrant for senior IPS officer and ADG, State CID, P P Pande for his alleged involvement in the Ishrat Jehan fake encounter case. Earlier, a CBI court in Ahmedabad had rejected its plea for the arrest warrant.

The CBI had told the court that despite two summons, the officer had failed to turn up and now was evading the CBI. The investigating agency could also complain against the state government for shielding Pande.

The senior officer has been on sick leave since the time reports about his impending arrest started doing the rounds. The state government had claimed that the officer was on sick leave and it had no idea about his whereabouts.

New Delhi, May 21: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) to airport operators on Wednesday for recommencement of domestic flights from May 25 onwards, saying Aarogya Setu app is not mandatory for children below 14 years of age.

"Passengers shall compulsorily walk through screening zone for thermal screening at a designated place in the city side before entering the terminal building," the AAI said in its SOP, which has been accessed by news agency.

Airport operators must make appropriate arrangements for sanitisation of a passenger's baggage before his or her entry into the terminal building, said the SOP dated May 20.

The AAI manages more than 100 airports across the country. However, major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are managed by private companies.

Civil Aviation Minister had announced on Wednesday that domestic flight services would resume from May 25 onwards in a calibrated manner.

London, May 14: Vijay Mallya on Thursday lost his application seeking leave to appeal in the UK Supreme Court, in a setback for the embattled liquor tycoon who last month lost his High Court appeal against an extradition order to India on charges of fraud and money laundering related to unrecovered loans to his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

The 64-year-old businessman had 14 days to file this application to seek permission to move the higher court on the High Court judgment from April 20, which dismissed his appeal against a Westminster Magistrates' Court's extradition order certified by the UK Home Secretary.

The latest ruling will now go back for re-certification and the process of extradition should be triggered within 28 days.

The UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said Mallya's appeal to certify a point of law was rejected on all three counts, of hearing oral submissions, grant a certificate on the questions as drafted, and grant permission to appeal to the Supreme Court.

The Indian government's response to the appeal application had been submitted earlier this week.

The leave to appeal to the Supreme Court is on a point of law of general public importance, which according to experts is a very high threshold that is not often met.

Hyderabad, Jul 12: Hyderabad MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday condemned the demolition of a mosque and a temple inside the Secretariat building. He demanded the arrest of the contractor for demolition.
"During the process of demolition of the Secretariat building in Telangana, the mosque and temple were also demolished. The contractor must be booked and should be arrested. The public should know that we condemn this," he said while speaking to news agency.
Pointing out that his party MLAs Akbaruddin Owaisi and Moazam Khan have urged the state Assembly to look into the matter, he added, "We are not against the building of a new Secretariat, but what we asked for is not to destroy these structures during the process."
He welcomed the Chief Minister's announcement regarding the rebuilding of these structures.
"We expect the mosque to be built in the exact same place where it once stood. We expect the Chief Minister to speak to the representatives and meet our expectations and emotions about the mosque," he added.
