Kerala basks in IAS glory

New Delhi, May 4: Haritha V Kum¬ar, a B Tech from Kerala University, has bagged the All-India Rank 1 in the prestigious Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), making it the third consecutive year when a woman captured the top slot.

In a show of consistency, the Thiruvananthapuram resid¬ent achieved her dream of joining the elite Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in her fourth and final attempt.

She is currently a probationer in the Indian Revenue Service (IRS)–2011 batch, and is undergoing training at the National Academy of Customs Excise and Narcotics in Faridabad, Haryana.

Domination

Kerala dominated the list of top-five successful candidates with V Sriram and Alby John Verghese achieving second and fourth ranks respectively. A total of four candidates from Thiruvananthapuram have made it to the top-25 list.

As many as 12 from Delhi figured in the top-25 list. Stuti Charan, a science graduate from Jodhpur University and a post graduate diploma holder in personnel and marketing management from a private B-school, stood third after appearing in the exam from Delhi.

According to the results, in the top-25 list, there are candidates claiming domicile from as many as 12 states or Union territories namely Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

Among them, six made it to the merit list in their first attempt, nine in second attempt, eight in third, and one each in their fourth and sixth attempts.

Haritha Kumar said: “I am very happy. You know, nobody expects that one will get first rank. I thank God and parents. Special thanks to my teachers and friends. I could not clear the examination in my first attempt. I got 179th rank in the second attempt and got IRS. My rank dropped to 294 in the third attempt. I did not lose heart and my efforts have borne the fruits.”

Though an engineer, Kumar took Economics and Malayalam Literature as her optional subjects. “One’s life revolves around Economics so I took the subject. I took Malayalam as it is my mother tongue and also I have a special liking for the language since my childhood,” she said.

The 2012 results, declared here on Friday, indicated that it was essentially a women’s show. A total of 998 candidates have been selected for filling 180 vacancies in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), 30 in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), 150 in the Indian Police Service (IPS), 630 Central Services Group ‘A’ and 101 Central Services Group ‘B’ vacancies across the country.

In Central Services Group “A”& “B”, 34 vacancies are meant for physically challenged candidates. Of the successful candidates, 753 were men and 245 women. A Total of 457 successful candidates including 23 physically challenged were from the General category, 295 including nine physically challenged from Other Backward Classes, 169 including two physically challenged from Scheduled Castes and 77 from Scheduled Tribes.

Over 2.71 lakh candidates appeared in the Civil Services (preliminary) examination, 2012. Of them, 13,092 qualified for the main examination held in October, 2012, of which 2,674 candidates were selected for the personality test conducted in March-April, 2013.

With increase of 14,933 cases, India's COVID-19 count stands at 4,40,215

New Delhi, Jun 23: With an increase of 14,933 new cases and 312 deaths in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count reached 4,40,215 on Tuesday.

According to the latest update by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), 14,011 deaths have been recorded due to the infection so far in the country.

The rise in confirmed cases today is lower than the highest spike of 15 thousand plus cases registered on Sunday.

The count includes 1,78,014 active cases, and 2,48,190 cured/discharged/migrated patients.

Maharashtra with 1,35,796 confirmed cases remains the worst-affected by the infection so far in the country. The state's count includes 61,807 active, 67,706 cured, discharged patients while 6,283 deaths have been reported due to the infection so far.

Meanwhile, the national capital's confirmed coronavirus cases reached 62,655.

2,233 deaths have been reported in Delhi due to the infection so far.

Tamil Nadu has reported 62,087 cases so far with toll increased to 794.

Rajasthan Assembly passes resolution against CAA

Jaipur, Jan 26: Rajasthan on Saturday on Saturday became the third state in the country to pass a resolution urging the Centre to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

he resolution was passed in the state Assembly amid opposition by the BJP which accused the ruling Congress of pursuing appeasement politics.

It is the second Congress-ruled state to pass such a resolution after Punjab. The Kerala Assembly too had passed such a resolution against the CAA moved jointly by the ruling Left Front alliance and the opposition Congress-led UDF.

The Rajasthan Assembly resolution, passed by voice vote, also asked the Centre to withdraw the new fields of information that have been sought for updation of the National Population Register (NPR) 2020.

"It is evident that the CAA violates the provisions of the Constitution. Therefore, the House resolves to urge upon the government of India to repeal the CAA to avoid any discrimination on the basis of religion in granting citizenship and to ensure equality before law for all religious groups of India," the state's parliamentary affairs minister Shanti Dhariwal said, moving the resolution.

Leader of the opposition Gulab Chand Kataria of the BJP questioned the state's right to challenge the Act.

"Granting citizenship is a matter for the Centre. In such a situation do we have the right to challenge the CAA? The Congress should stop doing appeasement and vote bank politics," he said.

Salute to Rajasthan Govt for rejecting communal and black CAA bill. This bill is agaisnt the teach of our Constitution and bjp has never done anything as per our constitutin. Its trying its best to scrap the constitution and restore it with RSS agenda. We should oppose any move by bjp against the value of constitution. As bjp has no respect to our constitution, it has no right to be in power. Many of bjp leaders are giving statemetns against the value of constitution and such leaders should be treated as anti indians and action be taken on them.

'Hindustan is Hindustan': Nidan Singh thanks Indian govt after his return from Afghan

New Delhi, Jul 26: Nidan Singh Sachdeva, the Afghan Sikh who was kidnapped a month ago and released recently, arrived here earlier in the day and narrated the ordeals that he faced at the hands of abductors and also thanked the Indian government for bringing him back to his 'motherland'.

Facing threats from Pakistan-backed Taliban, eleven members of Sikh community from Afghanistan, who were granted short-term visas by Indian Embassy in Kabul, including Sachdeva, who was abducted from a gurudwara in Paktia province last month, touched down in New Delhi on Sunday afternoon.

Speaking to news agency on his return, an emotional Sachdeva, said, "I don't know what to call Hindustan -- whether it is my mother or my father -- Hindustan is Hindustan."

"I was abducted from the gurudwara and 20 hours later, I was covered with blood. I was tied to a tree as well. They used to beat me and ask me to convert into a Muslim. I repeatedly told them that why should I convert, I have my own religion," he said while describing
Nidan Singh thanked Government of India for bringing him here.

"I am more than thankful to the Indian government for bringing us here to our motherland. I have no words to describe my feelings here. I arrived here after much struggle. The atmosphere of fear prevails there.

Gurudwara is where we can be safe but a step outside the Gurdwara is fearful," he said.
"They used to beat me every day and every night," he said further and added, "It is because of sheer happiness, I am speechless. I am very grateful to them."

Ministry of External Affairs recently announced that India has decided to facilitate the return of Afghan Hindu and Sikh community members facing security threats in Afghanistan to India.
The decision comes four months after a terror attack at a gurdwara in Kabul's Shor Bazaar killed at least 25 members of the community.

India has condemned the "targeting and persecution" of minority community members by terrorists in Afghanistan at the behest of their external supporters remains a matter of grave concern.

Leaders of the Afghan Sikh community have appealed to the Indian government to accommodate the Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan and grant them legal entry with long term residency multiple entry visas.

Once a community of nearly 250,000 people, the Sikh and Hindu community in Afghanistan has endured years of discrimination and violence from extremists, and the community is now estimated to comprise fewer than 100 families across the country.
