Mamata Banerjee's government to acquire two Saradha-owned TV channels

May 24, 2013

Mamatas_TV_channelsKolkata, May 24: Mamata Banerjee has announced that her West Bengal government will acquire Tara Musik and Tara News, two of the 13 media outlets that the now-defunct Saradha group ran, on "grounds of humanity."

The chief minister said the government would "give ex-gratia payment of Rs.16,000 each to the 168 employees of the two channels for the month of May." To acquire the two channels Mamata Banerjee will have to pass an ordnance or a legislation which will need the President's signature.

The Left has called it a "waste of public money" and has said the move raises legal and ethical questions. "We don't think the state government has the legal right to acquire private TV channels. Moreover, how ethical is it to acquire the assets of a company which is being probed for a scam, and especially when the matter is sub-judice," Leader of Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra said.

The opposition also wants to know why only these two channels. The Saradha group, which collapsed after its chit fund went bust, had around 10 channels with around 1300 workers. Mr Mishra wants to know what about the rest of the more than 1000 employees.

The two Bengali channels were bought by the Saradha Group in 2011. However, the management served closure notices in April this year, allegedly without giving salaries pending for three months.

The Saradha group collapsed last month, wiping out the savings of lakhs of small investors in West Bengal. Sudipta Sen, the owner of the group, was arrested from Jammu and Kashmir along with two colleagues last month days after he went missing as cheques from the chit fund that he ran began to bounce.

Mumbai, Jan 30: Speaking at an event, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Azmi's son and businessman, Farhan Azmi said that if CM Uddhav Thackeray will build lord Ram's Temple at Ayodhya then he will build Babri Masjid there. He said, "My problem is with Uddhav Thackeray.

I respect him a lot and if in Shiv Sena somebody really deserves respect, then it is no other than Uddhav Thackeray. He never runs a government and I don't think he is running his party correctly.

If being the Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray says he is going to Ayodhya on 7th March, I will also go with him. He will build lord Ram's Temple and we will build Babri Masjid."

New Delhi, June 16: Tensions along the Line of Control border between India and China have spiked with an Indian army officer and two soldiers killed in the Galwan area of Ladakh, the Indian army said in a statement on Tuesday.

This is the first time in decades that a clash involving casualties has taken place on the 3,488 kilometre border between India and China.

"During the de-escalation process underway in the Galwan Valley, a violent face-off took place yesterday night with casualties. The loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers. Senior military officials of the two sides are currently meeting at the venue to defuse the situation," said an official statement.

The two sides had made headway in talks last week with army chief General MM Naravane saying disengagement was in progress. The development had come after weeks of tension, including an incident in which patrolling soldiers from the two sides came to blows on the banks of Pangong Lake, resulting in injuries.

The two armies have since thinned out some forces in a positive signal but soldiers, tanks and other armoured carriers remained heavily deployed in the high-altitude region, an official had said.

India and China fought a brief border war in 1962 and have not been able to settle their border despite two decades of talks. Both claim thousands of kilometres of territory and patrols along the undemarcated Line of Actual Control - the de-facto border - often run into each other, leading to tensions.
