Rift in BJP delays talks on Modi role in poll campaign

June 9, 2013

Rift_in_BJPPanaji, Jun 9: Amid strong differences within the top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over a role for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, an announcement on Sunday giving him a prominent position remains a possibility.

There was no decision regarding the new responsibility for Modi on Saturday. However, it is said he may be made either the convener or chairman of the party campaign committee for the Lok Sabha elections.

The rift in the party, heightened by the absence of party veteran L K Advani possibly against the demand for a prominent responsibility for Modi, remained the talking point on the sidelines of the BJP national executive meeting that began here on Saturday.

“Meetings are going on to iron out differences. There will be some clarity by tomorrow (Sunday) which will be spelt out by party president Rajnath Singh,” a senior leader said.

Singh spoke to various leaders, including allies. He is said to have discussed the issue with Advani and ally Janata Dal-United leader Nitish Kumar.

There was also speculation that Rajnath Singh had put forth a proposal before Advani by which Modi would be made convener of the campaign panel. Advani had agreed to it.

If this is agreeable to Modi, then Rajnath may head the panel in his capacity as party chief. However, party spo¬k¬esperson Nirmala Sitharaman, termed it “media speculation.”

A senior leader pointed out that the party president could make an announcement regarding the campaign committee chief, but any decision on the prime ministerial candidate should be taken in the presence of Advani.

Party spokesman Javadekar told journalists, “Rajnath Singh told the delegates that they would go to their respective states after the meeting with new energy, new confidence and enthusiasm.”

The absence of Advani, who has never missed any party meeting ever since the founding of the BJP in 1980, has been attributed to the pressure to make Modi campaign panel head although the official reason given for it was his illness.

Several leaders considered part of his camp—Jaswant Singh, Yashwant Sinha, Uma Bharti, Shatrughan Sinha, B C Khanduri and Maneka Gandhi—have also stayed away from the meeting. Uma Barti has said she is unwell. Ravishankar Prasad and Varun Gandhi are abroad.

The issue did notfigure at the executive meeting that discussed a resolution on national security. Rajnath Singh may raise the issue in his concluding remarks on Sunday as there is immense pressure on the leadership from the party rank and file and a section of the senior leaders that Modi be given a prominent role ahead of elections. Advani is said to have opposed this move.

The 85-year-old leader, who is said to be still nursing an ambition of leading the party in the 2014 elections, will not be attending the concluding session on Sunday either. Asked why several leaders, known to be close to Advani, have also stayed away, party spokesman Prakash Javadekar remarked, “It is the change of season and it is natural that some may fall sick.”

New Delhi, Mar 5: Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan assuring that the government has the coronavirus crisis under control, is like the Titanic captain telling passengers not to panic as his ship was unsinkable, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday.

Gandhi's remarks came after Vardhan's assurance in Parliament that the government is taking all necessary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) in India.

“The health minister saying that the Indian government has the coronavirus crisis under control, is like the Captain of the Titanic telling passengers not to panic as his ship was unsinkable,” Gandhi said in a tweet.

“It's time the government made public an action plan backed by solid resources to tackle this crisis,” he said.

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.

Gandhi has been raising concerns over the coronavirus infection since long. In a February 12 tweet, he had said coronavirus is an extremely serious threat to “our people and our economy”.

“My sense is the government is not taking this threat seriously. Timely action is critical,” he had said.

Earlier this week, Gandhi had hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the detection of fresh coronavirus cases in the country, saying he should quit wasting India's time “playing the clown” with his social media accounts when India is facing an emergency.

With the message of “Here's how it's done”, Gandhi had also tweeted a video of Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressing Singaporeans on how to deal with the coronavirus.

The number of coronavirus cases in India is 29, including 16 Italians, the government had said on Wednesday, adding all international passengers will now be screened at airports, amid growing concern over the spread of the respiratory infection.

Rajghat, Feb 23: The maternal uncle of Dr Kafeel Khan, who was recently arrested for allegedly making inflammatory statements during anti-CAA protests, was shot dead in front of his house at Bankatichak in Rajghat area, police said on Sunday.

Dr Nusratullah Warsi aka Dada (55), a property dealer, was shot dead on Saturday night at about 10:45 pm and an FIR against two people was filed in this connection on a written complaint of his family members.

According to police, it appears to be a case of murder due to monetary and property dispute and they are searching for both the accused.

Dr Kafeel Khan, suspended doctor of Gorakhpur BRD Medical College, was last month arrested under charges of giving a provocative speech during a protest against the CAA and NRC at Aligarh Muslim University and was later charged with the National Security Act.

Warsi on Saturday evening had gone to his lawyer Siraj Tariq's house, a few metres away from his own house, and was returning home on foot when a man shot him in his head, killing him on the spot.

"On the written complaint of family members, case of murder against one Imammuddin and Anil Sonkar has been registered and police has initiated probe and is searching for both the accused. Police met the women in their house and is interrogating them," Circle Officer VP Singh said.

Prima facie it appears to be a case of property and money dispute, he said, adding, three teams have been constituted to investigate the case and soon the accused will be caught.

Dr Kafeel Khan had last month raised apprehension in a Mumbai court about being killed in an "encounter" by the Uttar Pradesh police after claiming that he had been "falsely" implicated in the case by them.

The paediatrician had come to the limelight in 2017 when a controversy broke out after the death of over 60 children in less than a week at the BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, where he was posted.

New Delhi, Jan 31: Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi on Friday said she will continue her fight till the convicts in the 2012 gangrape and murder case are hanged, shortly after a Delhi court postponed the execution of death warrants till further order.

Devi told reporters her "hopes are dashed" but she will continue her fight.

"These convicts have no right to live. We keep getting disappointed by the system. I will continue my fight till the convicts are hanged," she said.

A Delhi court postponed the execution of death warrants of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case till further order.

Additional sessions judge Dharmender Rana passed the order on a plea by the convicts seeking a stay on their execution on Saturday, February 1.

Devi said because of the loopholes in law the "criminals' lawyers had the audacity to challenge me in court that they will not be hanged".

The black warrants for execution of the death sentence against Pawan Gupta, Vinay Kumar Sharma, Akshay Kumar and Mukesh Kumar Singh, were issued on January 17.

A 23-year-old physiotherapy intern who came to be known as "Nirbhaya" (the fearless one) was gangraped and savagely assaulted on the night of December 16, 2012, in a moving bus in South Delhi. She died of her injuries a fortnight later in a Singapore hospital.
